The quiet chukle doesn't wake you. Nor does the gentle sound of your name being called.
But the sharp clink of a porcelain mug being placed on the table in front of you has your eyes snapping open and your body jolting out of its tired haze.
"Ah, so that's what it takes? You're up awfully early, trouble sleeping?"
"Mr. Adler? What're you-.." You cut yourself off, remembering that you'd staggered into the main building after hours of tossing and turning.
He takes a seat beside you, everything about him looking far more relaxed than you're used to. His posture less rigid, lips not yet set in the usual small smile, he looks almost at peace.
"I was about to begin preparing breakfast when I noticed you."
Adler pushes the mug towards you, the scent of tea, light and floral, flooding your senses. You gratefully bring it to your lips and take a sip before replying.
"Yeah, trouble sleeping.. Not sure why, I've just been having either nightmares or too realistic dreams lately."
He nods solemnly, one hand running through his hair. You can't help but notice the callouses now that he's yet to put on gloves, his hands marked with signs of countless hours of labour.
"I have a few suggestions to improve your sleep, let me prepare a few for tonight. Until then, why not drink your tea and try to close your eyes before the rest of Eibon wakes up?"
