Do you think that Irene pretended to 'die' (Christmas) to keep Sherlock safe? Because she couldn't stand to be the one to cause Sherlock more sorrow, especially now that Moriarty was in the picture?
Yes, I always thought that. She also said it herself in Battersea. She had to fake her death because dangerous people were after her(probably Moriarty's, just a hc). She had to do that to keep him safe. And she also said that if he knew she was alive, he would come after her.
This made me think of her giving her phone as a Christmas gift. Her phone contained a lot of information about powerful, influential people and their businesses which could potentially cause her death if it weren't in her hands. Did she thought that her phone(her life) would be in safer hands if it were with Sherlock? After all, she was basically on the run and in hiding from these 'killers' who wanted to found her or her phone. Maybe by faking hear death and giving her phone to Sherlock no one would think that there's any danger to them and their businesses. Just my thoughts.
