The Story of Tonight

The first time they sang it together, it wasn’t planned.

It was no surprise when Oikawa put on his Hamilton playlist, but the song that plays is new to those on the team who weren’t previously acquainted with the musical. That excludes the four third years, of course.

The captain took the lead as usual, and the other third years joined the small ensemble.

The rest of the team was still setting up for practice, attention only slightly drawn to their seniors. They were the only four singing, after all. But their attention was fully grabbed when it came time for whoever decided to be Laurens to solo.

Matsukawa joined as Mulligan, and Hanamaki as Lafayette. The four finished out the song with the two overlapping duets, the gym finally set up and ready to begin practice. Only then did they realize that the team had their full attention on them. Well, mostly on Iwaizumi.

The last time they sang it together, it wasn’t planned.

The rest of the team had long since gone home from their last official practice. The third years stayed behind, none of them wanting to admit that they were already missing the gym, missing the court. The feeling of heaviness and regret still hung in the air after their defeat by Karasuno, but they weren’t willing to leave just yet. They felt as though they had unfinished business, they needed to find closure. After extra hours of practicing, the four sat in the middle of the court in silence. After but a few minutes, Oikawa brought out the familiar speaker and connected his iPod. He slowly sat back down. The the heavy silence broke.

Dry laughs. They had each been trying not to let themselves cry just yet, but the difficulty became exponentially more with the nostalgia tied with the song. They took their usual roles.

Time seemed to slow, the only sounds being the boys with quiet, shaky voices, and sniffles. Despite their best efforts, each one of them had let some tears go before the song ended, the last being Oikawa.

Raise a glass to the four of us

Tomorrow there’ll be more of us

They shared one final, teary group hug.

They’ll tell the story of tonight.

Kazuma knows the Korean and Japanese choreography to Gee by Girls Generation, and even knows the choreo of their first single "Into the New World". All by heart.

These facts came to light during a particularly rousing game of Truth or Dare ft. Nohebi wondering why anything is the way that it is. Kazuma don’t give 2 fux it’s not like he spent his time memorizing these dances to never show them to anyone. He knows he’s Got Moves. He’s a Star

“He could’ve picked any other coffee shop. Any other person could’ve been working.” Tsukishima knew he was being what Noya-san would call ‘extra salty,’ but salt was his default. Desault. And there was no reason for, of everyone, the Grand King to show up at his significant other’s workplace, order a triple grande non fat decaf iced latte or whatever the hell it was, and then linger. Linger, right by the counter, chatting up Tsukki’s datemate like it was the most natural thing in the world. Kei trusts them, so he let the scene play out across the cafe. He could see all of the winks and hair flips Oikawa was tossing at them, and was surprised at himself at how proud he was that his s/o was taking it all like a professional, neither being rude nor playing along. The salt remained, however. “He could’ve just waited for his order like a normal person, but I guess he just felt the need.” 

“Kei, please. He was just another flirty customer, you know they come and go. Besides, it’s not like he couldn’t hit on me, look at me.” They took another sip of their drink, trying to enjoy their lunch break and their boyfriends won’t-admit-that-it’s jealousy.

“As right as you are, I think he’s done enough damage. Just ask Kageyama. Actually, don’t ask Kageyama, he’s almost as bad as Oikawa.” Tsukishima confused himself; he never got this defensive, much less possessive. He’s just never been one for smooth talkers or people pleasers, he rationalized. Especially ones that hit on taken people. 

“It’s nice to see you worried about something like this.”

“Oh, well I’m glad you’re happy. That I’m not.”

“Pfft, you’re never happy.” They leaned over the table to give Kei a kiss on the cheek. “I’m happy that you care about me enough to get jealous of some volleyball nobleman.”

Tsukki hid his subtle blush behind the hand fixing his glasses. “Jealous? Who said anything about jealousy?”

“Well you just did, for one.” 

“Have I ever told you that I hate you?”

“Love you too, Tsukki.”
