i’m not trying to stir negative energy but imagine if non Indians made a movie set in a made-up town in India and the actors used the fakest “indian” accents, and the clothing was a mockery of saris and traditional Indian clothes....wouldn’t that be offensive? like why not just cast real Indian actors who have the accent or can properly fake one? thats how i feel about Black Panther (2018).
Daily reminder that you can be African American and still appropriate African culture.
Being a poc doesn't excuse you if can't respect the cultures. Even being black. Additionally saying “im dressing like an African” or “im wearing African clothes” with no specific focus to a tribe/culture/country is too general to mean anything - cultures aren’t costumes. Therefore is offensive as not all Africans are the same even within a single country. If you can’t respect individual cultures and not generalize them as the same damn thing its pretty damn offensive. It’s only different if you’re “connecting with your roots” if you don’t generalize them and respect them individually.
im re-watching legend of korra ssn 2 when we get the story of the first avatar and it makes no sense to me that he was able to train to use all 4 elements without living among the people who were first given those abilities via the lion turtles. in korra ssn 1 and through out the original series, we’re reminded time and time again that each elements fighting style originated among the people who use it. so if the first avatar didn’t live among the people who created these styles as they were being granted the abilities to use them, how did he become a master? all the while Vatu the spirit of light who was training him to master the elements did do much teaching.
just a thought
