How to Permanently Rotate PDFs (with freeware)

All too often, I have dealt with PDFs scanned sideways by my professors or their administrative assistants. This is extremely frustrating and disorienting, especially since the free version of Adobe Reader doesn't allow you to save a rotated version of your PDF. If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro, then you have this function included in your software.

Update: The steps under the cut absolutely work, but I just found a faster method. You can use steps 3-7 under the cut if you need to combine multiple PDFs into one single file. 

You will need: -PDF Split and Merge Basic (http://www.pdfsam.org/download/).  -Adobe Reader or any program that opens PDFs

Step 1: Run PDF Split and Merge Basic 

Step 2: Click "Rotate" in the left menu.

Step 3: Click the "Add" button on the right to import your files.

Step 4: Select the desired degree of clockwise rotation and whether you just want the even or odd pages rotated.

Step 5: Select the destination folder.

Step 6: Check off the "Overwrite if already exists" box so that the new file(s) will replace the old file(s). I also usually check the "Compress" option. 

Step 7: Type your desired prefix (the standard one is pdfsam_)

Step 8: Click "Run" in the bottom right corner. 

Step 9: Open your new file from your destination folder. You will need Adobe Reader or any program that opens PDFs. 

Voila! All your pages are now right side up!

You will need: 

-Adobe Reader or a program that can open a PDF -PDF <-> JPG converter (available as freeware or online) -PDF Split and Merge Basic (http://www.pdfsam.org/download/) -Access to the Internet

Step 1: Convert your entire PDF file to a series of images. I use a free software called "Free PDF to JPG", but there are online converters that do the same thing (try Zamzar.com). 

Step 2: You will now have one image per page of your PDF. Rotate each page individually using your built-in software (for PC's that would be Windows Photo Viewer). Make sure you keep each file in sequential order!

Step 3: Open PDF Split and Merge Basic. On the left panel, click "Merge/Extract". 

Step 4: On the right, click "Add". Select your rotated JPG files. Make sure your files are in order -- if you mess up, you can click the "Move Up" or "Move Down" buttons. 

Step 5: Select a destination output file (Click "Browse"). Typically I use the original file with the sideways scan. 

Step 6: Check the box "Overwrite if it already exists" so you don't accidentally open the wrong file. 

Step 7: Click "Run" in the bottom right corner. Wait for the program to say "100%" in the progress bar, then check your destination folder for your new file. 

Voila! All your PDF pages are right side up.
