Description
This portrait is a contemporary replica of a lost portrait by Anthonis Mor. The original portrait, created in 1552 when the sitter was 14, belonged to Mary of Hungary. It was destroyed by fire at the Palace of El Pardo in 1604.
John, Prince of Portugal (1537-1554), was the son of King John III of Portugal and Catherine of Austria. The heir to the Portuguese throne, he died young at age 16 from illness, just 18 days before the birth of his son, Sebastian. His grandson Sebastian would later become king after John III's death.
