Ukraine’s sovereignty
Pro-Russia people sometimes argue that Ukraine was not sovereign, but was part of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This is the loose association of formerly Soviet states, in the same sense that the former British Empire nations have their own commonwealth.
The idea that these volintary international assocations are mutually exclusive with sovereignty is a lie on its face. But who recognizes Ukraine's sovereignty?
The UN recognized Ukraine's sovereignty by offering them UN member state status in 1991. The WHO, World Bank, WTO, and other similarly all-inclusive international oragnizations all recognize Ukraine as sovereign.
182 UN member states recognize Ukraine's sovereignty, plus the Holy See, Malta, and Tuvalu. Both Palestine and Israel recognize Ukraine's sovereignty. Both India and Pakistan. Both Iran and Saudi Arabia. Both North and South Korea.
Even Belarus! Russia's closest partner in the invasion of Ukraine, which has given up so much domestic power to Russia that some say Belarus is now a Russian puppet state, still has an operating embassy in Kyiv today!
Russia itself recognized Ukraine's independence from 1992 to 2019. Russia withdrew normal diplomatic relations from Ukraine about the same time that they withdrew from the International Criminal Court. Almost like they were broadcasting that they were about to commit war crimes against Ukraine.
China, India, and most of the nations of South America and some states in Africa are neutral on the Ukraine-Russian war, but every single one of them recognizes Ukrainian sovereignty as a nation. China described the 2022 war as a "border dispute" between two sovereign nations.
Other Russian allies and former Soviet republics recognize Ukraine's sovereignty include Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia (which contributed 4 fighter jets with pilots to Russia's war effort), Syria (withdrew normal diplomatic relations in 2019, but without any explicit statement that Ukraine was not sovereign), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, Moldova, and Romania. I left a few out.
The only Eurasian nations that don't recognize Ukraine are Russia and Bhutan. Somolia doesn't recognize Ukraine, persumably because they haven't had a national government since Ukraine declared independence. There are five Pacific Island nations that don't recognize Ukraine: Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga. The UN ambassador from Papua New Guinea urged the Russian Federation to withdraw immediately from Ukraine and called for peace talks.
Russia invaded Ukraine, a sovereign nation, without provocation. Russia was mad at NATO, justified itself with false claims that often even its own officials concede are factually inaccurate, and took out its anger on Ukraine (which is not a NATO member state, never has been a NATO member state, and had no realistic prospects to become one any time soon when Russia invaded). This is a war of naked aggression against Ukraine.
Don't let anyone lie to you about Ukraine's sovereignty or Russia's motives.
