My husband humbly requested a piece of his Rook to complement mine.
The size difference between the Veilguard Two-tagonists is crazy.
Adonis Thorne
It is taking literally all of my effort not to keep cooking on my rook before the game’s even out. ☠️☠️☠️
//The Collar, The Rope, or The Joining… Life is Full of Tough Choices.//
Adonis is the eldest child of an Altus Class family. Adonis stood to inherit his parents’ legacy and finally secure their house a seat in the magisterium… At least he would have, if he came into his magic when he was supposed to. What was initially believed to be a delayed onset of his magical ability was discovered to be a complete lack of magic in his blood. The embarrassment of such a late onset of magic was bad enough, but once Adonis’ younger sister came into hers and he has yet to do so, it became glaringly apparent he was never going to do the same. To remove Adonis from public view, his family conspired against him— pinning the murder of a Magister’s son on Adonis and sending him off to prison. The public claim of his parents was that Adonis came into his magic but had succumb to the ideals of the rebellion sparking across the imperium.
Faced with the options of slavery, execution, or joining the grey wardens, Adonis wisely chose the wardens.
//Love is a dangerous game for Grey Wardens to play//
Warden-Constable Jonathan Marcus was a stern man. He expected the most of his company, conscripted recruits from all walks of Thedas, and never tolerated anything less than each warden’s success. His reputation was well known among the Order, and he was frequently elected to lead recruitment through the harsher and less tolerant nations of Thedas.
It was during a conscription mission through Tevinter that Constable Marcus first met Adonis Thorne. A once proud, haughty, and standoffish noble from the Altus class sat cold and shaking in chains in a dank Minrathous jail cell. Marcus knew very little about each of his conscripts pasts, and he cared to know even less. Marcus asked Adonis the same thing he asked every potential recruit: “can you fight?”
Whether he could or not, Adonis fervently replied yes, preferring to take his chances with the Wardens rather than waiting around for execution or slavery to come knocking. Adonis was freed from the prison and left Minrathous with the warden company, bound to the Anderfels for the joining ritual.
Adonis adjusted to Warden life very slowly at first— lamenting the loss of silk sheets, refusing to do tasks he thought beneath himself, and for claiming he could fight Adonis proved useless without a bow in-hand. Any other recruit would have been cast out or struck down, according to senior wardens within the company, but for some reason Marcus remained patient with Adonis’ ineptitude and sour personality. He didn’t tolerate Adonis’ behavior, nor did he accept Adonis’ claims of being incapable or disinterested in the success of the company’s missions, but when Adonis did rise to the occasion, accept his duties, and perform as was expected, Marcus was quick to offer a word of praise or entertain Adonis’ desire to be close to him.
The relationship between Constable Marcus and Warden Thorne baffled nearly everyone in their company, but many wardens who had served the entirety of their time as a Warden under Marcus knew his time was coming. He had confided in his Warden-Lieutenants that the calling began to chase him through waking just as easily as it did while he slept, and it was only growing louder. Perhaps it was the pain of his impending doom and the knowledge that the end was coming that softened Marcus, and endeared him to Adonis’ stubbornness and vigor.
Whatever the case was, once a year had passed since Adonis survived the joining, Marcus succumbed to the siren call of the blight in his veins. Marcus intended to leave quietly, alerting only his Lieutenants before leaving straight for the Deep Roads. Adonis wouldn’t have it. The lieutenants hardly had a chance to say Marcus was on his way to the Deep Roads before Adonis tore off after him. He begged Marcus to stay, he pleaded to escort him to the Deep Roads entrance, he even asked if he could accompany Marcus on his descent. All his requests were met with a sorrowful but resounding “no.” Adonis’ final lament in parting with Marcus was that he was the first man Adonis truly loved and respected and he would have nothing to remember Marcus by save for his memory. Marcus plucked the earring from his ear, and delicately placed it in Adonis’. Marcus told Adonis he knew Adonis would go on to do much good for the wardens, but when Adonis told him “I love you,” all Marcus could manage was to instruct Adonis to turn away, return to camp, and never look back after they parted ways.
Warden-Constable Jonathan Marcus has long since taken his place at the Maker’s side, but Adonis still thinks about him often, and has never taken out Marcus’ earring.
(I don’t usually have this much PC x OC lore cooked into my Dragon Age games, but I thought this up while fleshing out Adonis’ character and backstory. I was just so charmed by the idea of Adonis having to overcome a love lost and what that means to his place in the Grey Wardens, I simply couldn’t resist. 🩵)
Adonis Thorne - Outfit Defaults
[Tevinter Altus] - Post-Trespasser, Pre-Veilguard; From a time when Adonis was expected to elevate his house to the magisterium. Very much inspired by the dark, oilslicked concept art of the Altus class.
[Death Row] - Post-Trespasser, Pre-Veilguard; From Adonis’ brief stint awaiting execution in a Minrathous prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Lucky for him the grey wardens were recruiting that day. Also based heavily on concept artwork of Tevinter slave apparel.
[Kirkwall] - Post-Trespasser, Pre-Veilguard; Adonis’ first set of “civilian” clothes since joining the grey wardens. This is also when Adonis acquired his face tattoo (pulled from Dragon Age: Inquisition’s lineup.) This outfit is sampled from several canon Kirkwall assets, including hawke’s smoking jacket, and one of the women’s blouse cuts.
Grey Warden - Veilguard canon, Default Armor; A tightly fitted and light rogue’s armor that lends its well to forward defense while remaining quiet and easy to move in. This is a reskinned design based on the N7 bonus armor that I designed to be more grey warden-y.
