What Bloodied Hands Have Wrought chapter 5 is up!
Okay but what if Rook said to cut the bullshit and work together when Davrin and Lace insist that one of them lead the team. What if they bicker the entire time because they don't think the other person is necessary because they're Totally Capable of doing this, thanks.
What if they deflect a blow from Ghilanain and get her attention to take the heat off the other person and make it out of there alive because they were there to have each other's backs.
What if they get back and realize that the only reason they both made it back alive is because Rook insisted.
And Rook didn't.
not picking at anyone in particular who has said this bc a lot of ppl have said some version of this... but i truly don't get what "flaws" veilguard has. also, yes, this is going to be semantics-heavy
as with all such commentary, i am not criticizing any one individual for using a term in a way i disagree with, i am commenting only on broader cultural tendencies/norms
but flaws, specifically. bc by all metrics i can figure, it is without flaw
now, "without flaw" =/= "perfect." literally nothing is perfect, which is why i find it redundant and weird to do the "well, i know it's not perfect, but-" stuff. i also don't need to state that water is wet when i say it's raining
but flaws? i think ppl use this word when what they mean is that their preferences were not met. bc let's look at some metrics by which to judge veilguard
metric: storytelling
extremely well-executed. the story makes sense, there is depth to it, and all elements of the game lead into and support the storytelling. did you love it? hate it? that is impact and does not directly relate to whether something's story is flawed or effective
metric: gameplay
again, extremely well-executed. the gameplay is smooth, fully functional, and did not require any significant fixes after release
metric: narrative accessibility
veilguard can be someone's introduction to the dragon age universe and it works. at the same time, it is meaningful to existing fans
note: this is not a necessary metric for something to be flawed or effective, but it is still worthwhile to acknowledge veilguard's success in this way
metric: narrative compatibility
i touched on this above, but veilguard fits in with the stories told by the prior games. it does not usurp them or deny them, it instead presents more of the world, more of the lore, more of the diversity of opinions within that world
metric: characterization
the characters, both major and minor, are developed, distinct, and cohesive
i'm really not asking for people to tell me what they see as "flaws" in this game. i don't want to hear it. and if you don't want to hear this, u 1) do not need to follow me (i don't take unfollowing personally) and/or 2) can filter as you will, bc i tag this stuff. this is commentary, not me posing an open question
but really, all the "flaws" i've heard about are not flaws, they are unmet preferences. to meme a little, it kinda feels like trying to order a milkshake at home depot and then saying home depot is a flawed home improvement store. failure to meet a given person's desires is not a flaw
Lucanis may have the Dellamorte nose, but he has his late mother's eyes. Caterina never looks at him when meting out punishment, not out of shame, but because she sees the daughter she never had in his WET BROWN EYES. And that's my brick for today.
it's kinda funny, because while i really did enjoy lucanis, i didn't really start digging into how i view him until i saw posts on here that i was like uhhhh?? about
not that they were bad, per se, more that i realized my view was very, very different. that said, i know a lot of ppl also view things similarly to how i do! but it was an interesting experience
the main ones are:
his becoming first talon is not a Yay Yippee Woohoo happy moment, no, but it makes sense because of how the crows are as an organization and because of how lucanis is as a person
his liking coffee is not played as a joke or a cliche but instead clearly used as a way of reconnecting with his past and something that is deeply important to him, especially following his imprisonment
lucanis as he is in his story (stories?) was never going to be a 1:1 replica of how he is in veilguard, because his story/stories take place prior to his imprisonment and prior to being forcibly bonded with spite
WIP WEDNESDAY THURSDAY 6/18/26
Hello, it’s WIP Wednesday Thursday!
Here’s how it works:
I tag you! Alternatively, you see this post and take my open invitation/tag. If you want to be added to the tag list, reply to or reblog this post letting me know!
You either reblog this post and add something you're working on OR you make your own post with something your working on (and tag me in it) and I'll share it back here and leave a comment! It can be any kind of WIP you want, and it can be for any fandom or original work you like!
That's it, but please make sure to keep it before midnight! I do not keep track of these posts after the day they are published. If you miss this one, don't worry, you can always jump in next Thursday!
Also, if you're looking to share work that is finished/currently being published, please do so during my Bio(ware)feedback event, which takes place every other Saturday.
