Steve returned to the compound exhausted but hyped up to see you again after all the hardships you had needed to face. He thought he was finally over it - after all, Thanos was dead and order was restored in the universe, right? Well, not in Steve’s universe, apparently. He almost broke his neck while looking for you in the compound, rapidly snapping it from left to right and back, desperate to find your E/C eyes among all the Avengers.
Bruce called out his name to take Steve into the conversation he was having with Scott and Hope, but he didn’t even hear his friend’s multiple attempts and completely dismissed Scott’s comments on how heroic and truly amazing he was on the battlefield. Steve made his way outside, looking around to see if there was anyone there, but when the silence hit his ears and he saw no moving around, he rushed back inside to take another look for you in there - maybe his gaze just simply flew past you and you might not have paid attention to him anyway. However, after just anohter failed attempt, Steve ran up to the first person he could see to ask about you.
“Wanda, where’s Y/N?” He asked, grabbing the witch by her shoulders, trying his best not to panic. When Wanda couldn’t provide an answer good enough for Steve, he simply kept trying, basically asking all the Avengers about you.
“We haven’t seen her since the battle, Steve... I’m sorry,” said Rhodey with slight pity in his eyes which Cap didn’t even want to see. He quickly shook his head and stepped closer to the man, lowering his voice. He couldn’t help the genuine panic escaping his lungs as he continued speaking.
“Rhodey, this cannot be. She didn’t even get injured that badly, she was fighting close by my side. I...,” he tried his best to hold back the desperate tears ready to escape his baby blue eyes. It didn’t matter that everyone he had spoken to told him they hadn’t seen you, Steve still couldn’t stop hoping you were still alive. After all, there was no world without you according to Steve. You still had to be out there somewhere - and he was ready to find you.
Rhodey had no chance to hold him back, he was all ready to get back out there and search for you until dawn. He still had something important to tell you and he was worried it was way too late now. Steve didn’t listen to all his friends calling after him, he didn’t care about the weird and confused looks he got from them, he only cared about your well-being. He was mentally cursing himself for not telling you how much he actually cared about you. Because, no matter how much Steve tried to keep his composure and not let anything slip, he had been deeply in love with you since day one and he was not willing to lose you just yet. He still had to confess to you, and hold you in his arms and live a life with you. He would’ve never wanted to do it any other way.
Steve had almost reached the huge front door when he saw your familiar frame making its way to the compound, your shaky hand reaching for the handle. He was stopped in his rush and it felt like the whole world had slowed down at that moment. When you stepped inside and brushed your dirty hair out of your slightly bloody face, you saw him, too. An exhausted smile slowly spread over your face and Steve let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding before making his way towards you, enveloping you in a crashing hug before you could even open your mouth to greet him. You let out a small whimper as he slightly pressed your aching ribs together. Steve quickly let go and asked if you were okay, making you giggle and hit his shoulder in a teasing way.
“I missed you too, Rogers. And yeah, I’m okay. I guess I passed out and hit my head. Or the other way around,” you mumbled, slightly dizzy and dehydrated, trying to steady yourself by holding onto the blonde man standing before you. Steve looked at you with worry in his eyes, asking you a dozen questions before he was cut off by your tired giggles just again. You placed a hand on his cheek and looked deep in his eyes, assuring him there was nothing terribly wrong with you while also sending shivers down his spine. However, as you stood there in silence, looking into each other’s eyes while Steve was holding you close, it just felt like as if you could read each other’s minds. You both leaned in at the same time and you pressed your lips against Steve’s the moment he let his hand run down to the small of your back. When you pulled away and smiled at Steve, his whole heart simply filled with love and adoration for you. Suddenly, he couldn’t find the right words to tell you how much you had always meant to him but he felt like he had no reason to hurry anymore - you had a whole life ahead of you to fill with ‘i love you’s and memories, and God knows what else. Steve finally had you and you had him, and there was nothing that could ever tear you apart. Not anymore.
