Bombardier CRJ900 Adria Airways

Since 2007, Bombardier has been producing the upgraded CRJ900 NextGen, which featured modernized cockpit equipment, a 5.5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the base model, and an enhanced cabin interior. Adria Airways operated this particular modification, primarily the CRJ900LR (Long Range) variant, capable of flying routes up to 3,300 km. In 2018, the airline’s fleet included nine aircraft of this model, making up a significant portion of its fleet alongside Airbus A319s, Bombardier CRJ700ERs, and CRJ200LRs. The “900’s” cabin layout offered two classes of service—business and economy—with a total capacity of 86–90 passengers. This configuration met the airline’s needs for routes from Ljubljana to cities like Frankfurt, Zurich, and Istanbul.

Adria Airways’ main hub was Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, from which it operated most of its flights, including 170 weekly scheduled departures to 24 European destinations. The CRJ900 played a central role in this network, serving both short routes (e.g., Ljubljana–Vienna, Ljubljana–Skopje) and longer ones, such as flights to Moscow (Sheremetyevo Airport, Terminal F). These aircraft were also used for flights from secondary hubs in Pristina and Tirana, highlighting their versatility.

Adria Airways’ route network was designed to integrate with Star Alliance partners like Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss International Air Lines, enabling seamless connections through major European hubs. The CRJ900 was ideal for this model, offering high-frequency flights on routes with limited demand.

On charter routes, which formed a key part of the airline’s business, Adria frequently deployed the “900s.” These aircraft were used for seasonal flights to Mediterranean and Red Sea resorts, allowing the airline to flexibly adapt to changing demand. Passengers noted the cleanliness of the cabins and quality onboard service, including meals tailored to flight duration and the option to order special menus.

The operation of Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft by Adria Airways serves as an example of how regional jets can be effectively integrated into a mid-sized airline’s route network, efficiently serving routes with moderate demand.

Airbus A319 Adria Airways

Adria Airways was Slovenia's flagship airline and the largest airline operating scheduled and charter flights to various European destinations. Founded in March 1961 as Adria Aviopromet, it later became known as Inex-Adria Airways, and then acquired its final name – Adria Airways.

The airline joined the Star Alliance in 2004 and entered into codeshare agreements with several major airlines, including Aeroflot, Air India, Air Serbia, Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Turkish Airlines. Adria Airways' main hub was Ljubljana's Jože Pucnik Airport, and it also operated flights from Pristina and Tirana. On September 30, 2019, Adria Airways ceased operations due to financial difficulties.

In the last years of operations, Adria operated a fleet consisting of Airbus, Bombardier and SAAB. The airline began acquaintance with the Airbus A320 family in 1989. It was the first A320 aircraft equipped with International Aero Engines V2500 engines. Subsequently, most Airbuses at Adria Airlines flew on such engines.

The A319 aircraft were mainly used for short- and medium-haul flights within Europe. A number of popular routes included flights from Ljubljana to Manchester, from Bucharest to Munich, as well as other European destinations. Adria Airways received its first Airbus A319 in April 2010 and registered S5-AAP. Just a month later, Adria received a second A319, registered as S5-AAR. Both aircraft were traditionally equipped with IAE V2500 engines.

The third A319 with registration S5-AAX was the airline's latest acquisition, and it joined its fleet only in 2015. It was different from its counterparts – it had CFM56 engines under the wing, 142 seats were installed in the cabin (instead of 144), and it had a "round" serial number – 1000. In short, he was a great original.

The winner was a Montenegrin businessman that is known as the largest banana importer in Europe. Slovenia Antiq Palace Hotel, Ljubljana

Flew into Ljubljana (LJU) on Adria airways from Zurich. Flights are plentiful out of European capitals. Tiny airport, no customs, so could not be simpler. 

Stayed at a brilliantly located Small Luxury Hotel called Antiq Palace and Spa. I would say spa is overstating it slightly--2 massage rooms, but perfectly acceptable.

Our room was Suite 7- absolutely enormous with full dining room, kitchen, and living room. It overlooked a very pleasant and welcoming garden downstairs in the courtyard.  The music academy is next door so when the students are practicing it is like having a free concert. The room was oddly decorated in quasi antiques and oversized couches with black flocked fabric. Bizarre. Since it is located in a real mansion, the doors and door jams are uneven so it is easy to trip--my husband ended up marking the doorways with luggage tags, which was a great invention. There were two bathrooms one with a pod like shower which was moldy and squirted water all over the floor. In other words this is a three-star hotel in a five-star location and in a fabulously historic building. Great breakfast in a charming white vaulted room overlooking two garden spaces. 

You can walk to anything from the hotel including the historic castle on the hill above, accessible via foot or cable car. Nearby are terrific restaurants like Vavas ' Or and Juliaja. Those two are right next door to each other, and there is a gourmet resto at the castle called Strella. Terrific wine bars as well like Tabar and Movio. Food and wine are a driving force in Ljubljana.
