Exclusive: Northlane Interview
Prior to going on stage to kick-off their first American headlining tour, Northlane's vocalist, Adrian Fitipaldes, set some time aside for an interview. So we sat in their tour RV and had a Q&A style talk. If you're only interested in the second part of the interview which was very off-topic, click on the audio file in our other post "Continued: Northlane Interview".
Q: So this is your first headlining tour here in the states, any thoughts on this? Are there any places you're most excited to play at?
A:
"Yeah man, definitely stoked! I think we have 12, no wait, 11 dates here. Something like that. In the west coast at least. We're pretty excited tonight! Chain Reaction, being the first stop on the tour, we played here last time. I think it's a lot more famous than people think, especially for the people around here in Anaheim. In Australia, there's a lot of YouTube videos that we've watched from here."
Q: How do you guys think your music has changed from the previous album to this album, recently released?
A:
"Well we sort of were finding our fate with our first full-length record and we spent a lot more on production, as well. It was pretty much self-funded. And yeah, we took a big leap, spent a lot of money doing it. Pretty much sacrificed a lot of money, going broke [he laughs]. But it's alright, you end up making money back you know? Just be patient."
Q: Are you confident in the direction you guys are going in?
A:
"Yeah definitely man, definitely. I guess also with the differences between the two albums, it's probably cliche to say, but as we got older we sort of matured and I think our music reflects that as well. When we released our first record, we were pretty much all in our teens. Now this second record we're all in our twenties, early twenties. We did a bit of growing up as well, and yeah I think that's gonna continue to happen."
Q: Any new albums? Announcements?
A:
"Any new albums! Oh my god, well we have started writing. We are actually going to take some time off this year to write and record. It's very early stages though, just riffs and bits. Stuff that Jon has mainly written in our band. We have no plans for a release date, we don't even have plans for our single yet. So, it's definitely a work in progress. But um, I guess people can start getting excited somewhat."
Q: Will it be as heavy as the first album? Or will it be even heavier?
A:
"Oh, well [chuckle], I don't know. I don't know, I haven't heard enough of yet. It's probably gonna go uh, chiller. Not as heavy as the last record. But still heavy!"
Q: How long is your guys' set tonight?
A:
"I think it's about 45 minutes. We're playing the same set we've played on the 'Big Day Out" Tour, might make some changes throughout the tour as well, might switch it up. Yeah, we pretty much had two days off between that tour and this tour. And there was a lot of scrambling with visas and shit like that."
