The Bright Star Puzzle Purse Love Note by Adrienne Rozzi // Poison Apple Printshop

Limited edition of 100. Handmade screen print featuring the poem ‘Bright Star, would I were stedfast as thou art’ by John Keats

Made popular during the Victorian era, the Puzzle Purse is a type of valentine that unfolds in a star-like pattern to reveal a special love note on the inside. These valentines were traditionally exchanged between lovers as intimate tokens of their devotion and, in addition to the written sentiment, often carried a lock of hair or pressed flowers inside. Unfolding in a hypnotic pinwheel-like pattern, opening a Puzzle Purse slowly revealed a love poem with the main sentiment written at the very heart of the note. In true Victorian fashion, this unfolding was viewed symbolically as the act of “opening your heart to love.” Today, puzzle purses carry the memory and romance of the Victorian era, when love was held on high and celebrated justly. The Puzzle Purse I’ve created features my original artwork accompanied by one of my favorite love poems from the romantic era— “Bright Star, would I were stedfast as thou art” by John Keats. In addition to the traditional Victorian love notes, the artwork is inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and their affinity for medieval sorcery and courtship.
