Autumn Leaves. Oil on canvas (1856) Painted by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir John Everett Millais (1829–1896), Autumn Leaves was set at twilight in the garden of Annat Lodge in Perth, Scotland. The composition features four girls raking and gathering dry leaves for a bonfire.

The two figures on the left are Millais’s young sisters-in-law, Alice and Sophie Gray, wearing middle-class clothing, while the two on the right are local working-class children. Millais's wife Effie wrote in her diary that the painter's exact goal was to create a picture "full of beauty and without a subject." Acclaimed art critic John Ruskin, who was also Effie's ex-husband, famously praised the painting's atmospheric twilight sky as a flawless technical achievement. Loc.
