Location ideas for the advanced compositing project we were assigned today. Not really sure what I’m going to do but I’ve been wanting to do something with this location for awhile; it always reminds me of Lord of the Rings for some reason.

I feel like i’m writing it after every project but it was the hardest and most challenging project so far. I mean it should be like that though, everything evolves with time.
About my final piece. Very surprised and bit disappointed. Well when they launched this brief i had absolutely different ideas and i thought i will put something really simple together in Photoshop and track it in Nuke since i was so bad in Nuke and i didn’t really liked or enjoyed this brief. Until i viewed it from another angle. I decided to go for 3D model that i made myself in C4D instead of classic Photoshop + image matte painting. I really enjoyed making this Lab in C4D although i struggled really hard at first. I didn’t had any ideas how the Lab should look like etc. Luckily i found some really good inspiration from Instagram and i felt like this is it. I’m going for that futuristic look. So why i was surprised is because i didn’t think i would deliver such a good key and overall piece in Nuke. I basically did everything i didn’t feel comfortable with this project. Firstly i made infection animation in Houdini which i have used before bit but not making so difficult simulation. And secondly compositing it all in Nuke. I really got used to Nuke in the end and even enjoyed it little bit. And it’s very good that we have this project and that we HAVE to do it in Nuke since otherwise i wouldn’t even touch this software. But now i have Nuke experience in my pocket... sort of. Huge thanks for Tom and Jack as well, they helped all of us so much with this project and stayed even late when had to! New and very exhausting project is now done! TOTAL RENDER TIMES: Approx. 110 hours.

I have really enjoyed doing this project, and have really liked having the challenge of using nuke as it has really taught me a lot about the software. I definitely think that working in nuke for tracking two has really helped me in this project as It gave me an understanding of nuke itself, such as layout, different nodes, etc.
Despite all the issues I have had with face tracker I am glad I did it and used it in my project. The issue was that the license for face builder needed renewing and updating, and on top of that Nuke and Facetracker beta needed an update. All of this took about 2 weeks for IT to fix, which overall left me about 2/3 days to fix my face track before the deadline. So I am happy with how its turned out.
I am very pleased with my use of smart vectors of putting the logo onto the jumper of the main character. Initially the render times were massive and kept crashing nuke, so I went to see tom and jack and they said to render out the vectors and to read them back in. So I did the and then rendered the outcome as a tiff and then read that tiff back in to use as my footage for the keying and face tracking. This sped up the render times a lot! Now I am super happy with how it looks and I think it really added something to my piece.
I am happy with my matte painting and how that looks. I like how I made this completely from scratch from the various pictures I took from around cardiff and Bristol.
Overall I feel like I have learned a lot from this brief and it will definitely help me in future projects. I have really enjoyed using nuke and do want to continue using it in future.
here is my shot and breakdown together which I will post to Vimeo. I will post this as my contribution to the project, and the once the edit is done for the whole video I will post that as well.
here is a breakdown I made of my shot. I love breakdown, I just find it so cool to look back through and see what you've done to your work. I am really happy with how this has went
I made this quick breakdown of my matte painting showing how I did it and what I used to create the different elements. I think this looks really cool and shows off what I have done.
I cloned stamped a lot of stuff such as blocking out the windows with newspapers and stuff but the breakdown didn't pick this up.
