Asking for things I want
I've written about my diminished sense of adventure and my meager efforts to, if not jump in headfirst, at least be a little less of a stick in the mud. I have not hashtagged them yet but to keep track I will start labeling them #adventuresque. A couple of weeks ago I agreed to volunteer for the Greater Louisville YMCA's Annual Campaign. Yes, I am soliciting donations to support the Y's many, many programs, especially for low-income and otherwise at-risk children. Youths. Aside from selling Girl Scout cookies and writing grant proposals to expand my program/ensure my livelihood, I have not very often asked people to support causes I believe in. So that is an adventure. It turns out that 1) everyone I have asked so far has agreed to give and 2) I don't think I would be terribly upset if they said no. New thing has been tried. This afternoon, I called legislators in Frankfort for the first time. This isn't something that made me nervous, like the idea of asking people for fat stacks, but I had never done it because of all the reasons people don't call legislators. Nevertheless, I was at a pediatric residents' advocacy meeting today and they have been working--in all that spare time resident physicians are well-known to have--to pass some important legislation to improve children's health. Today they had posted the phone number to call the Legislative Research Commission, which delivers notes to legislators and committees that say "so and so supports blahbedy blah." I called to support Smoke Free Kentucky and one-time, mandatory, online training for physicians to recognize sentinel child abuse injuries. Other adventures planned for today? None, I think.
