57) Cal McAllister

Like David Horridge, Cal never starts his creative process with a blank page. He begins by getting as much information as possible and then whittles it down, and then starts all over again with even more information. I personally agree with this process as well because I LOVE getting as much information as possible and then wading through it until the best possible outcome is unveiled. I revel in the tiniest details and largest quantities of information. Cal likes to put together all the pieces of information he hears into one interconnected whole, which is also something I love to do. When I was younger, if I couldn’t fall asleep fast enough at night I had the unfortunate experience of witnessing my brain go through all of that days information bit by bit and relating it all to previous experiences and information I have learned. The only way I as able to explain this when I was younger was by telling my parents my brain was a filing cabinet timing together all the past and present information together with strings for any revenant associations.

In this very clever albeit cruel stunt 'Trojan Mailing', DHL get their competitors to advertise for them.  UPS and other delivery services were tricked into delivering parcels which were in fact just moving billboards advertising DHL. The idea involved covering delivery boxes in thermo-active foil which hid DHL's sneaky message when cool. The package's delivery addresses were purposefully hard to find so that when the secret message was revealed 'DHL is faster' it would have even more impact. Even though delivery men saw the message, they obviously had no choice but to deliver the parcels. 

Whilst this might seem the work of an evil genius, I could not help but think that there seemed something fishy about this stunt. It seemed slightly too cruel.  I was right. DHL have admitted that they have had nothing to do with the advert. Who even knows if it was real or staged. Seems like an ad agency is trying its hardest to get noticed.  A plan which has worked well with the video reaching far over a million views at the time of posting. It is a shame DHL was not behind it, it is refreshing to see brands push boundaries and not afraid to play dirty in doing so.

This has to be one of the best advertising ideas I've seen this year. The 'Days of Hope' campaign by Saatchi & Saatchi Berlin sees homeless people anchor the weather to create awareness of the harsh impact that the tough freezing Winter has on the homeless in Europe. After reading the weather report, the presenters are encouraged to ask the public to donate to a local charity.

What I love about the campaign is they've used real people from the street and not actors, it brings a touching and effective tone-of-voice to the stunt.

Ikea posters fold out to create moving boxes

I love advertising that solves problems, that is useful.  In this poster campaign by Ikea, the medium helps solve an issue 'physically'.

      July 1st is known for causing a lot of problems and havoc in the province of Quebec, due to the fact that it is a popular moving day.  One of the key issues is the shortage of storage boxes leading up to and around the date. Ceasing a marketing opportunity, brand Ikea put up posters that could be folded to make moving boxes. The posters grabbed attention not only for their physical appearance but due to their lighthearted straplines, moving advice and discounts on eating out for those movers without a kitchen.  An extra cool element was that the boxes could even be turned into chairs!
