A Escolha - Capítulo 11

Ai que dor de cabeça, acordei com a cabeça estourando. Também resolvi um monte de coisas ontem e eu acabei ficando assim...  ACABADA!

Levantei ainda de pijama (look) e fui fazer minha higiene. Assim que terminei fui na cozinha tomar um comprimido, senão nem conseguiria ir viajar de tanta dor (Nossa, como eu sou dramática). Encostei na bancada da cozinha e Chay veio em minha cabeça. Essa casa fica tão vazia sem ele. O que será que ele está fazendo agora? Será que está com aquela vadia? Porque você tá pensando nele ainda Melanie? Ele que fez essa escolha...

Fui tirada dos meus pensamentos com a campainha tocando sem parar. Nossa tem gente que não tem o que fazer hein!?

- Já tô indo – gritei correndo até a sala. Olhei no olho mágico e fiz cara de tédio – Pra quê que você veio a essa hora aqui?

- Ai Mel, você é mal-humorada de manhã hein? – Lua (look) entrou em minha casa e sentou no sofá  – Que gostosa você está só de pijaminha hein!?

Ela riu e eu retribui.

- Só você pra me fazer rir nesse inferno total que está a minha vida – sentei do seu lado.

- Para com isso Mel, vai tudo melhorar ok? – ela pegou nas minhas mãos – Você vai viajar, realizar seu sonho... Mel você vai ficar 1 mês em Vegas, tem coisa melhor?

- Eu vou trabalhar Lua!

- Você quer melhor trabalho do que esse? – pensei um segundo e sorri – E além do mais, você não vai trabalhar o tempo todo, você pode curtir um montão!

- É verdade né? – Lua sorriu – E você porque está tão feminina hoje?

Lua abriu a boca espantada e me tacou uma almofada

- Tá me chamando de Maria-macho?

- Não amiga! – comecei a rir – Tô falando que a alguns dias que eu vejo que você está colocando roupas mais femininas, cores sem ser só preto, entende? Hoje você já colocou um sapato nude...

- Ai amiga você tá louca? Então e os preparativos para a viagem...

- Porque você tá tentando desconversar? Ah já sei, tem homem no meio né? Pode me contar... – Lua ficou assustada – Fala logo vai...

- Você me conhece bem hein? – ela riu

- Claro, desde que nascemos né minha linda? – a abracei bem forte – então pode me contando...

- Então sabe o Thiago que eu estava conversando no telefone esses dias? – assenti – Então, nós já estamos saindo a algum tempo e eu tô gostando dele

- Awn , que lindo amiga! – a abracei – E vocês estão namorando?

- É, mais ou menos – ela sorriu

- Ai que maravilhoso Lua, estou muito feliz por você! – sorri – Pelo menos vou estar ocupada com as suas novidades...

- Mel, você está livre, você tem todo o direito de ser feliz... Aproveite a sua vida amiga – ela passou a mão em meu rosto.

- Mas e o Chay?

- Você o quer de volta? – Lua me olhou confusa

- Não, de maneira alguma, mas eu acabei de me separar amiga, não ia ficar feio?

- Ele pensou nisso na hora de te trair? – meus olhos se encheram de lágrimas- Amiga, esquece ele e vive a sua vida, me escuta, por favor?

- Tudo bem, eu vou pensar, se alguém me interessar quem sabe, né?

- Isso! – Lua levantou – Amiga agora eu tenho que ir trabalhar tá? – eu assenti e ela me abraçou – Tenha uma ótima viagem e não se esqueça de mim senão eu te mato quando você chegar aqui me ouviu?

- Sim mamãe! – nós rimos

- Então tá! Se divirta muito ok?

- Eu vou, pode deixar!

- E cuida do meu sobrinho lindo, não exagera na bebida...

-... Lua eu já entendi – nós rimos

- Desculpa, é que eu quero cuidar de você amiga!

- Eu sei disso, minha irmã linda – Lua abriu um sorriso.

- Então tchau, boa viagem! – ela me deu um beijo no rosto e saiu.

Fechei a porta do meu apartamento e eu fui dormir mais um pouco. Hoje eu não iria trabalhar, só ia arrumar as malas e esperar o Arthur vir me buscar pra nós dois viajarmos.

Acordei as 16h, meu voo saia as 21h, então eu tinha muito tempo para arrumar as malas e chegar no aeroporto. Fui tomar um banho e assim que saí do banheiro meu celular tocava, o peguei e atendi:

- Alô?

- Mel? – sorri automaticamente ao ouvir a voz do outro lado

- Oi Thur!

- Você está bem?

- Eu tô ótima e você?

- Eu também, então eu te liguei pra avisar que eu vou passar aí 19h tá bom? Nós temos que chegar uma hora antes...

- A hora que você quiser!

- Tá bom! E você o que está fazendo?

- Estava tomando banho

-Me desculpa atrapalhar Mel, eu vou desligar, até mais tarde.

- Não atrapalhou não Thur, deixa de besteira!

- Não, mas eu tenho que arrumar as malas.

- Eu também, então até mais tarde, um beijo.

- Tchau!

O Arthur fica todo fofo quando está nervoso (risos), faz tempo que não o vejo assim, desde quando eu comecei a namorar o Chay. Ai, o Chay, eu ainda não consigo acreditar no que ele fez comigo. Será que eu não era o suficiente pra ele? Ele tinha que procurar outra, e ainda uma mais nova que eu. Será que eu estava velha pra ele?

- Melanie esquece ele! – disse pra mim mesma.

Arrumei as malas e quando pude ver já era 17:30h então resolvi tomar um banho de banheira para relaxar. Fiquei lá um bom tempo e até esqueci da hora, e assim que terminei já era 18:30h.

- Tenho que me arrumar logo!

Saí da banheiro e me vesti (http://www.polyvore.com/mel_viagem/set?id=68672214). Comi um sanduíche e levei as malas para a sala, logo logo o Arthur estaria aqui.

Quando deu 18:55h o meu interfone tocou

- Pronto!

- Senhorita Melanie, o senhor Aguiar está te esperando aqui na recepção.

- Tudo bem, já estou descendo!

Em ponto, o Arthur nunca se atrasava. Peguei as minhas malas e as coloquei no elevador. Assim que cheguei ao térreo, o Arthur estava me esperando na porta do elevador com aquele sorriso lindo de sempre.

- Está linda Mel – ele disse e eu sorri

- Obrigada Thur, você também! – ele sorriu mais ainda

Arthur me ajudou com as malas e as colocamos no porta-malas do carro dele.

- Prontinho – ele disse colocando a última no porta-malas e o fechando.

- Obrigada Arthur! – eu sorri

- Que nada minha princesa! – eu o abracei, mas fiquei estática quando ouvi a voz de um certo ser

- SOLTA ELA AGORA! – Chay estava gritando. Ai meu Deus!

Arthur me soltou e se virou para encarar a figura que estava na nossa frente.

- Quem você pensa que é para agarrar minha mulher? – Chay falava com muita raiva.

- Agarrar? Sua mulher? Que eu saiba eu sou SEPARADA de você Chay! –eu falei, dando ênfase na palavra separada.

- Só fisicamente, porque nos papéis ainda somos casados!

- Eu só não pedi o divórcio ainda porque você disse que não iria assinar!

- E não vou mesmo!

- Melanie vamos! – Arthur pegou na minha mão. O olhei e sorri.

- Aonde você vai? – Chay me olhou

- Não te interessa! – falei com desprezo

- Interessa sim, você vai embora? – ele perguntou se aproximando de mim.

- Não! Eu vou viajar...

-... Não, você não vai! – ele disse chegando mais perto ainda. Dei um passo para trás

- Eu vou sim e ninguém vai me impedir! E para de ser psicopata Chay!

- Não fala assim amor, por favor! – ele me tocou.

- Para de me chamar assim, eu não sou mais nada sua – me virei para Arthur – Vamos?

Ele assentiu. Fui para o carro e entrei. Percebi que o Arthur não tinha vindo também e olhei pela janela.

- Se eu souber que você está tentando alguma coisa com a Melanie, eu te mato – Chay apontava para Arthur

-VOCÊ NÃO TEM O DIREITO DE FALAR NADA! – Arthur gritou – Você a usou, você a traiu e pisou nela... Coisa que eu nunca, NUNCA faria com ela – Ele abaixou o dedo de Chay e o encarou – Eu vou cuidar dela até o ultimo dia da minha vida e não é você que vai impedir. Ela merece o mundo e se for preciso eu dou para ela. Eu a conheço a muito mais tempo que você e jamais faria isso o que você fez se ela...

-... se ela? – Chay perguntou e eu estava curiosa com a resposta. Arthur me olhou

-...Se ela, se nós...

Eu saí do carro e fui em direção a eles

- Arthur vamos, você não tem que dar satisfação pra ele! – o puxei e deixei Chay sozinho nos encarando.

Arthur foi o caminho inteiro calado e quando chegou no aeroporto deixou seu carro no estacionamento e ligou para a Jhulie vir buscar o carro depois e deixar no estacionamento da empresa.

Arrumamos as coisas do embarque e nem trocamos nenhuma palavra.

Estávamos na sala de embarque e ele estava de cabeça baixa

- Ei, porque você está assim Arthur? – levantei a sua cabeça

- Nada Mel, eu só fiquei incomodado por tudo oque eu falei para o Chay – fiz cara de confusa.

- Você não queria ter falado aquilo?

- Sim, eu falei tudo o que estava engasgado desde o momento que você falou que ele havia te traído, mas eu não sei se era o certo!

- Por quê?

Ele me olhou e pegou em minhas mãos

- Porque eu posso acabar falando coisas que não devia – fiz menção de falar algo, mas ele colocou o seu dedo em minha boca – Shii, não precisa dizer nada, ok? – assenti – Eu só quero te ver bem e eu estou aqui pro que for preciso, tá bom?

Eu assenti novamente e deitei minha cabeça em seu ombro. O que será que o Arthur quis dizer com isso? Eu fiquei tão curiosa quando ele estava dizendo todas aquelas coisas pro Chay. Nunca ninguém tinha me dito aquilo. Nem o Chay, em todo esse tempo que ficamos juntos. Será que o que a Lua havia me dito era verdade? Será que o Arthur gosta de mim?

O olhei e ele sorriu. Deitei minha cabeça de novo em seu ombro e ele começou a fazer carinho.

Acho que não, é só proteção, como já havia dito. Ele só falou o que ele diria pra qualquer garota.

Just to explain, I've transcribed this to analyse for a Language and Power essay, which is why it has every utterance in it (i.e. "er"). Square brackets indicate in interruption or people talking over each other.  TE is Tom Elliott, PC is Paul Clark and GK is Gerry Kelly (obviously). The video online cuts out the first question which I assume is "Do you regret..." and finishes as Paul Clark's asking another question. Have fun...

TE: Absolutely not. Er some of these people are people who were in the provisional IRA.  You heard I’m sure if you were listening to it live in the studio you heard the heckling that there was er to me and have to say to these are the people that er we’re supposed to try and do business with at at Stormont I have to say.  Such treatment for er democratic politicians y’know is that acceptable?  I don’t believe it is.  These are the people that have actually er some of these people within the provisional IRA have tried to destroy this country for years.

PC: What provoked you er to say what you said both about the flags and Sinn Fein?

TE:  Well you obviously heard er the heckling but I have to say we have to be clear and honest about what some of these people were involved in in years gone by.  We can’t forget the victims of this province, we can’t forget the victims.  The people who were murdered and maimed and their families and er we must remember that as well.  These people er some of them have caused great infliction and sorrow upon er many families within this community and I as one will not forgot those people and those families [whom have had loved ones murdered and injured.]

PC: [N- no indeed and there there are many people. N-] nobody does forget those victims either Mr. Elliott.  Do you think that it was leadership to say what you said when you referred to the flags of a foreign nation and also the scum of Sinn Fein.  Is is that the kind of leadership that we can expect from the the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party?

TE: Is anybody denying that though the flag’s of a foreign nation.  [I don’t believe they are.  I think they are flags of a foreign nation.  They’re from the Irish Republic.  They are a foreign nation Paul?]

PC: [Well, I think I let’s just say, let’s just say Mr. Elliott Mr] Well Mr. Elliot I’m not sure that we would have heard similar language from the leader of the DUP?

TE:  Well that’s up to the leader of the DUP.  I will er refer to it in my way and as far as I’m concerned the tricolour is the flag of a foreign nation, the Irish Tricolour.  I’d be surprised if the leader of the DUP would not accept that as well but that’s a choice for him.  As far as I’m concerned we’re part of the United Kingdom [and I’m proud as a Unionist to be a part of the United Kingdom.]

PC: [Ye- yes yes but] our near our near neighbours are the people who live just across the border in the Irish Republic [?] may I also just say to you listening to your conversation with me is Gerry Kelly MLA, North Belfast.  Erm, do stay with us er Tom Elliott but Mr. Kelly can I ask you is there anything you’d like to say to er Tom Elliott in view of what he has just said and his defence of what he’s just said in the count in Omagh?

GK: Well, as far as being the defence of what he says he he says let’s not forgive the victims and in that I agree with him but what he has to remember I presume you would agree is that victims go right across the board. He he is an ex UDR man as I understand it er he’s quite proud of that that’s up to him.  But the UDR were involved, as were the British Army and the RUC, were involved and indeed loyalists connected into that through collusion in in the deaths of many many people [and and and I’m not I’m not s-]

PC: [Yes but what do you make of the language Sinn Fein scum?]

GK: Well, well I think it is absolutely the wrong language in the wrong period.  It is not leaderly, it is not even good mannered, it is er it is insulting and when he talks about a foreign flag let us be clear and even yourself talking about our neighbours across the south I am Irish.  It is my flag. I live here, I am elected here, I was a minister here for four years and I represent as a Sinn Fein representative many many people, almost half er er erm if you take in all off nationalism, obviously the SDLP as well, almost half of the population so to say these things first of all is not based on reality [and]

PC: [But] would you use language like er er the flag of a foreign nation in relation to the union flag?

GK: Well it is a British flag but no I don’t use that type of language.  I accept and we have long since said that y’know there are people here who look upon themselves as British and are British not not just my opinion of it they are British and and they need to be allowed that cultural [and and everything that that]

PC: [Would you]

GK: involves b- so much this is about equality remember. There are victims in all sides so when he talks about victims he seems to be only talking about one section

PC: Conversely would you ever refer to Ulster Unionist scum?

GK: No, I wouldn’t

PC: OK, er thankyou Mr. er Mr. Elliott erm you’re still with us erm [you may]

TE: [I am indeed Paul yes]

PC: You may have something to to to smile about in a moment or too but let me just get your reaction to what you’ve been hearing from Gerry Kelly.

TE: Well I think it’s very rich coming from Gerry Kelly, someone who was eh eh prisoner, who was a jailbreaker er within the IRA and eh who was part of that team who who murdered a prison officer er and was responsible for bombings.   We heard what many representatives of Sinn Fein said at the Easter Rising commemorations just a couple of weeks ago.  Is that good leadership?  Is that good, is that what we want to hear within the Unionist community, praising people who who had murdered our citizens of this nation whether they are from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland or indeed anywhere else throughout the world.  I have to say it’s not and it’s very rich coming from Gerry Kelly er a former, and I don’t know whether he still is, IRA man.

PC: Well, he he can answer that for himself and I’ll give him that opportunity in a moment but have we not moved on? Have we not moved on?

TE: Well, I I’d love to see the province move on but but you heard what it was like today in Omagh, the heckling, the jeering, er the flag waving of of the Irish Tricolour

PC: [I dare say]

TE: are you saying that’s not provocative to the people of of of Northern Ireland Paul?  I’m telling you it is and it’s provocative to the Unionist people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone.

PC: I’d like to I I I’d like to just park it there if I may Mr. Elliott. Someth ing that may just bring a smile to your face, two Ulster Unionists returned in Strangford.  [David McNarry and Mike Nesbitt]

TE: [I’m aware of that Paul,] thankyou

PC: David McNarry and Mike [Nesbitt]

TE: [thankyou]

PC: [can] I get your reaction?

TE: Yes, I’m pleased er we obviously had targeted er two seats in in Strangford and er I’m pl;eased that David and Mike have both been elected there and er clearly they will be two excellent representatives there. er David is long standing and provides a very good service for the Ulster Unionist Party in Strangford and I’m pleased that he’s joined by Mike [Nesbitt.]

PC: [Both of] both of them both of them are er just in there below the er below the threshold as well. 

TE: Yes and er two of them are elected and I think that’s what matters at this stage Paul.

PC: Mmhm, right, eh just stay with us Tom Elliott I did er want to er allow er To- er Gerry Kelly to to respond to some of the things thatyou were saying there in answer to his er his points.  Gery Kelly.

GK: Well can I make eh two points, one them is political and I think part of the difficulty while this may be Tom Elliott’s personal er opinion I think as leader of the UUP unfortunately an- and you can see it in this election and the type of eh spiralling down that they’re doing in terms of voters.  Is he they are placing themselves to the right wing of everything which is not a comfortable position for ulster unionists and somewhere they will not they will not survive as a political party because that’s where the TUV are and they’re trying to take the position of the TUV and it isn’t going to work.  Let me also say this y’know he feels because he was heckled eh at a count that that’s a difficulty and erm all you have to do is go in and look at the Hansard or look at the footage in the assembly and hear some of the things that are said when er Republicans and and sometimes Nationalists get up and indeed sometimes Unionists eh get up to speak in that and some of it is eh if it had not been in the assembly and quite recently would have been libellous so er I mean

PC: [we-]

GK: [he he] he’s a bit rich to be

PC: [well]

GK: [saying] because he was heckled he should be coming out [with these types of comments]

Something interesting is happening in North Down, people are saying they would vote Sinn Fein, but feel they can’t. This is because of the role that its members may (or may not) have played during the Troubles.  Nevertheless, in a constituency that in its history has always returned Unionists to Westminster (at one point a single candidate got 98% of the vote), this is a fascinating turn of events.

At the beginning of this election campaign Peter Robinson said [I couldn’t find the quote, if you know it stick it in] this would be the first election fought on policy and economics in Northern Ireland and for once he’s close to being right.  It is Sinn Fein’s policies that are attracting voters here, but their past that’s turning people off.  People are starting to move away from the old sectarian headcount into an almost normal way of thinking about politics.  Some are even asking what difference it would make to become a part of the republic.

I have no doubt the normal candidates will be returned for the DUP.  The UUP may be wiped out since Sylvia Hermon and Alan McFarland became Independent and there is the increasing possibility of Steven Agnew taking a seat for the Greens.  Even this result would show there has been a sea-change and people are beginning to think progressively about Northern Ireland, about the possibilities there are for the country.  They’re caring more about what politics means for their families, their work, when their bins are emptied, than about divisive, tribal loyalties.

Whether or not this translates across all the constituencies in the north is a moot point.  Catherine Wylie’s piece for the Independent a few weeks ago shows that on the opposite side of the country there may be a slight return to the old ways.  But then those I’ve met from the west don’t hold these views, in fact they’re almost always strongly opposed to them.  One of the best ways that the dissidents can be shown there is no support for their activities is for a high turnout, a show of confidence in normalised politics, no matter who gets voted in or out.

North Down is not representative of Northern Ireland, it is regarded as being wealthier (although not in all places) and well educated.  This may explain why people are willing to closer examine what parties are saying.  Of course, it may have started happening all over the country.  Maybe sometime soon we’ll be divided along left and right rather than by religion.
