when auburn and noel had been called in for some parent-teacher meeting, richard was confused. he was ahead in his workload and had not been behaving any different. the drive home, they revealed nothing to him and instead acted normal and richard felt just a bit on edge. perhaps it was about his concerto piece and nothing more, so he sat in the backseat and looked out the window at new haven as they drove back. when they returned home, richard decided to nap before dinner and the one assignment he had to complete could be left for after dinner.
the nap was not as restful as he wanted it to be. still, he felt restless and tired and wiped at his eyes. his eyes darted to the coin, one he got as a young boy: a gift from his father. a good luck charm. richard rubbed his eyes and sighed--the nightmares were back and getting worse. no good luck charms could change that.
there was a slight knock on the door, and richard looked up at that. he blinked at the door once, twice before he called, “you may enter.” auburn came in and richard remembered, suddenly, about the meeting. perhaps it was not about his concerto.
