Doodles of story characters: Aelani, Uries, and Nim! I’m still picking away at this story when I have time. Some worldbuilding about This Funky Eye Thing under the cut:

One key element in my winged people story is the ability to connect their minds to spirits, which is known as attuning. Both the birdfolk and batfolk believe that spirits are around them at all times, like an invisible tide influencing the world. Through training and meditation, one can learn to “tug” a spirit out of the tide and into their own mind and body. This can give the attuned person all sorts of benefits depending on skill, like extended senses and projecting thoughts (useful because the birdfolk and batfolk don’t speak the same language!) The more powerful attuned folk can even influence nature. Use of a spirit connection is characterized by the attuned person’s pupils turning a smoky, glowing white.
