When was the last time they'd been together? It was late, past midnight. At least, Aether assumed it would be. It had been long since he'd lost track of time. Couldn't really remember when was the last time he slept or had eaten... The last five hundred years were taking a toll on him. If not physically, his mind was definitely elsewhere. Surely, he was older than Teyvat itself, both him and Lumine were. But, at least before the ship had wrecked into that planet, they spent the days together and the time passed by as a blink. Now? He frowned, his jaw tightly shut as he glared to nowhere. Now it felt like staring at a sandglass empty, unable to move or speed it up.

The throne felt cold under him, even if he had not moved from it in hours, days. It just refused to warm up. He was growing impatient. Surely, he thought to himself, if he could just talk to her... He scoffed.

No. It probably wouldn't change anything.

Even worse? She wouldn't even believe her eyes if he aproached her suddenly, out of nowhere. The previous times –long ago, too long ago– she had been a whirl of nerves, no matter how glad about seeing him. Lumine had started to associate his presence with war and bloodshed, seeing him would immediately get her walls up, wondering where the attack was happening. It hurt him, it really did. And now? After that poor trick the shadows from Hiisi Island had pulled on her? She wouldn't even trust him to be him.

And yet he wanted— no, he needed to see her.

It took him greater strenght than he'd assumed to have to put his body in movement again, like a long lost abandoned gear that would barely spin on its own anymore. His hand, a dismissive move so no guards would follow him. It had been hard enough to create a mirror room, Aether didn't need any weapons made of flesh and bone in there. As much loyalty he felt for the khaenri'ans, he didn't believe they would be able to enter that room without withering everything around them. Not with so much corrossion in their bodies, anyways.

The corridors were thin and packed with guards, every door having two on each side. And the closer he would get to his private chambers, the more suffocating it felt. There was no key to access it, just a simple rune forged with an element that simply did not exist in Teyvat. Only he could enter. Him and, if she ever managed to get this close, Lumine.

As dark and gloomy as it was, the scent of lilies surrounded anyone who dared to step inside. Which, in all fairness, meant just Aether. But he was glad about it. He didn't want to share it with anyone else. He inspired, slowly and unsteady, taking in the leftover memory of her scent. It had fascinated both of them how every world they had travelled to had somehow managed to grow the same flower. White, with a brief touch of blue, and a soft, sweet fruity scent.

Resting his back against the door, he let his body slip to the floor, too tired to keep himself in one piece. Almost unconsciously, Aether teared the fabrique of time-space with a vague move. Just slightly. A little window.

Lumine was sleeping under the moonlight. The little floating being that kept pestering her also snored not too far away, she tended to float in her sleep some nights. Aether doubted neither of the two were aware of this. He didn't really care about it, anyways.

Lumine's breath was soft, steady. Every now and then she'd spasm just for a fraction of a second. The cold, he assumed. Her eyelids would flutter ever so slightly, like a butterfly's wings attempting to take flight. The moon made her hair look almost platinum. His fingers twitched, aching. If he focused really hard, he could still remember faintly the feeling of his fingertips running through her hair.

A low grunt escaped his lips as he pulled his own hair away. He missed her. He missed all of her. The way her hair felt against his fingertips, the way her eyes would shine like ambar under the sun, a golden constellation in her iris. He missed her resting against his body, laying on his chest. He shook his head, trying to push away the crippling despair.

Too late.

His gaze slipped from her hair to her bare shoulders, pale and slender, soft. The way they curved like a crescent moon towards her neck like a slide. His breath caught on his throat, his mouth drying as his gaze slipped further, to the way her chest rose and fell with her breathing. The cloth of her dress was tight, but not glued to her skin. Laying on her side, he could almost see...

Aether grunted, his hand brushing against his lower stomach. This wasn't right. She wasn't even aware of his gaze upon her. She wasn't aware of the way her skirt wouldn't stay still as she moved on her sleep, her milky thighs bared to his eyes. Moles star-shaped covering her here and there. When had been the last time he'd sunk his fingers on her skin? His own pants felt like a jail against his growing erection. It felt wrong. She stared silently at Paimon, she was softly floating just some centimeters away from the floor, like a silver balloon. Sometimes, Lumine could almost see something around her, like a very pale yet shinny aura.

There was a little lake just half kilometer away from where they stopped to rest. With a long exhale, she stood up and walked towards the water. Maybe Aether had a room of his own –at least, she assumed he did, being the prince of the Abyss and all that...–, but she wasn't fully shameless yet. The dress fell like a pool of white clouds to her feet before she stepped into the water, her hands travelling down.

Tighnari swallowed heavily, before he said: “...Did you eat today?” 

Aether didn’t look at him, the boy still staring at his sister-lover, “...No.” 

It was obvious. The dark circles under his eyes, his cheekbones showing signs of sinking, the overall lack of energy- Aether was taking this hard and it was understandable. But he would be of no help to anyone if he accidentally killed himself in the process of worrying over his sister.

“Make yourself some breakfast.” Tighnari said, which was honestly more of an order, “Get some food in you. I’ll be here.” 

“Nari-” 

“When she wakes up, you need to be alert and ready. You have to be strong for her.” Tighnari said. Not if. When. They had to believe that.

“...Fine.” Aether relented, not having the energy to argue as he pushed himself up and off of his chair. Giving Lumine’s hand a squeeze, the blonde left the room, dragging his feet over to the kitchen. Tighnari had a suspicion he wasn’t actually going to eat anything but maybe just pretend so they wouldn’t argue. 

The total indifference Aether had towards him somehow made him feel worse than if he was angry. Tighnari wished he could do something, anything to help. But Nahida and Alhaitham were researching the gemstone while Cyno and Sethos were hunting down the witch. Too many cooks in the kitchen will cause problems so he relented when they told him to just lay low and support Aether. 

He brought some of his books with him, hoping that they would have any information about magic and spells but so far, there was nothing that could help. He sighed as he sat down beside the bed with the book in hand, eyebrows furrowed as he started to read. He didn’t know how much time went by as he flipped from page to page, skimming over the content quickly but he knew how to look for the important stuff. 

Usually when he reads, the world around him melts away and when he blinks, he realises that half the day is over. But now, every second and every heart beat felt like a weight on his chest growing heavier. 

The guilt was eating him alive. He had to do something. He had to find something!

“What are you reading?” 

“A book about magic.” he replied, clicking his tongue, his frustrations getting the better of him, “It’s somehow more complicated than science.”

“Is that because it makes no sense?” 

“Exactly, it’s just-” 

Tighnari blinked. Hang on a second…

His head snapped up, eyes ripping away from the book to see-

Lumine. Awake. Sitting upright on the bed. 

Tighnari almost fell off his chair in shock, “L-Lumine!” he exclaimed, fighting the urge to rub his eyes to check if he was seeing correctly. 

Lumine was awake! She was sitting on the bed, blinking her pretty eyes up at him. Her blanket was wrapped around her, the fabric even over her head like it was a hood so all he could see was her face but it was enough. 

Finally, finally she was awake! 

“You-”

“Lumine!!?” A voice behind him shrieked before he could say anything and faster than he could blink, Aether barged into the room and ran towards his sister. He almost tackled her as he hugged her, Lumine giggling as she was embraced. 

“Don’t laugh!” Aether chastised despite him laughing a bit as well, “Do you know how worried I was?! You were asleep for days!” 

“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” Lumine said, cupping Aether’s face with one hand, “But I'm alright. I’m here.”

Tears prickled at Aether’s eyes, the man choking back a sob as he leaned forward and kissed her. Soft lips pressed against Lumine's dry ones, a tear falling down Aether’s cheek. They separated, pressing their foreheads together, taking revelry in each other’s breath. Tighnari smiled at the scene, their love for each other truly something special. The nature of their relationship wasn’t something many people knew but he always assumed there was something more going on. Considering what Aether went through to get his sister back, it made sense, afterall. 

Aether ran a hand through her hair, wanting to pull her closer but frowned as his hand caught on- something. Confused, he pushed the blanket off of her head, letting it fall off of her head. 

“What the-” 

Aether and Tighnari gasped, their eyes widening in shock and their jaws dropping. 

“What? What’s wrong?” Lumine asked, tilting her head in confusion. 

“You…uh…” Aether said, mouth opening and closing like he couldn’t figure out what to say, so he just pointed at the top of her head. 

Lumine frowned as she brought a hand up to the top of her head before she jumped as her fingers touched something…furry. Tighnari’s jaw was on the ground, eyes wide and he couldn’t get a word out even as she clambered out of the bed. Her legs were shaky and Aether surged forward to catch her before she fell. She was unconscious for awhile after all and was lying on the bed the whole time that the blood hadn’t reached back to her legs. Aether picked her up, perching her on his hip before he walked to the nearby mirror. Tighnari walked up to the two of them and caught their wide eyes and shocked expression in the mirror. And of course they were shocked because on top of Lumine’s head…
