"This can't be real." Ada whispered to herself in deep shock. Before her eyes, a plus sign on the brand new pregnancy test she bought yesterday night.
It started with the minor signs.
Feeling bloated, obscure cravings, tender body and missing her period. All of it added up and when it finally clicked in her brain, she had a suspicious feeling conjuring inside of her.
The funny thing is though, she has an IUD. It was a requirement she demanded shortly before she and Leon began engaging in intercourse. Children and having them herself were never on the cards for her. Adopting? A possibility. Leon had mentioned it once and Ada promised to think it over.
She never has, not even for a single second thought.
It's not that she has anything against children. She finds them adorable, special people on this planet. But picturing herself as a mother? That's a joke. Ada has never once wanted to become one for the simple fact she finds it hard to believe she'll be a good one, let alone just decent.
This is a major conjunction in her mind.
Leon won't be home anytime soon. He's working all day, it's only eight in the morning. With this sitting on her mind, she doesn't know what will happen. Ada sighed deeply and sat down on the closed toilet, tears beginning to welt in her eyes. She despises crying, makes her feel beyond pathetic.
It cannot be helped this time around.
"This cannot be happening." Ada whispered sadly, her head in her hands, the test on the counter now. The mere thought of locking eyes with it again terrifies her. It's too surreal.
All the emotions. She has no idea what she'll do. She's sure Leon will say something along the lines of, "Well do you want to keep it?" 'It' as if it's some extraterrestrial being. People speak of babies as if they're objects, not humans. Ada finds it displeasuring.
Whimpering cries came from her as she forced herself to stand up and look at the test. Still positive, there's no escaping that. It's real. She can't deny reality any longer.
Ada walked out of the bathroom, slamming the door behind her and heading over to hers and Leon's bedroom. The idea of sleeping this off is all she can picture doing right now. Last night was a restless one for her.
As much as she's scared, which is a rare feeling, she's hopeful in telling Leon. He'll know just what to say to put her at ease.
-
"Hmm? What?" Ada's voice was sleepy, slightly groggy as she was awakened. "Hey there hun...didn't expect to see you asleep when I arrived home." Leon chuckled out, caressing her warm back while smiling down at her.
Every single thought before falling asleep hit Ada like a freight train. She then felt nauseous. "I don't feel so good, Leon." Ada hastefully sat up in bed. He took a stance and held his hands out, helping her to her feet. "Are you alright baby?" He asked her.
Ada doesn't know where to go with this. How does a fiancé tell their soon to be spouse they're with child? It's all too much, all at once.
Ada shook her head and began to whimper again, then the cries came. "Oh baby, what is going on?" Leon said in a loving tone, pulling her into him, hugging her tightly. He stroked her black hair, feeling the silky touch of it and smelling the floral scent drifting off from it.
He's so glad she's all his now. Forever.
"I need to tell you something...but I'm so worried." It's hard for Ada to be honest but right now? There's no time for dodging the inevitable. Cat must be out of the bag and curiosity will kill it. "Talk to be. I'm here." So reassuring.
Pausing for a second, Ada took his hand in hers and crept the two of them to the bathroom. Pointing at the door handle, Leon snickered. "Am I going to open this and see a dead body or something?" Now is not the time for jokes!
Ada swung the door open.
"Take a look for yourself."
She backed away. Now all she can do is watch and see how he reacts.
Her heart felt as though it was ready to bust through her chest. She clutched it, attempting to calm herself down. With each and every step Leon took into the restroom, she stepped back herself. Her head is aching, her stomach is churning. Legs even feel weak.
This feeling is one she hasn't felt in ages.
Leon came to a stop. His eyes were dead set on the pregnancy test, screaming at him that his fiancé is pregnant. Picking it up, he got a closer look. Ada closed her eyes and put her head in her hands. What the hell!
A faint laugh was heard from Leon before sudden thumping was, before he then swept her up into his arms, holding her close. "You're pregnant? Baby, that's amazing!" "Put me down!" Ada cried out, pushing herself away from him. Leon instantly listened.
"I'm scared, Leon! You know how I feel about this." Ada stumbled back to their bed, plopping down on it. She's on the verge of puking at this point. "I understand. I know." Leon stopped himself from showing how over the moon he is right now.
Walking over, Leon sat down beside her and exhaled. He took her hands in his. "This is your choice, hun. Keep it or not." "The baby is not an it! Stop!" Ada scoffed and Leon nodded quickly, kissing her cheek a few times. "I'm sorry babe." He hummed in her ear, then kissing it. "But still. It stands."
Leon would never make Ada do something she didn't want to. He's not a maniac piece of shit.
Ada then began to cry again, this time she buried her head into Leon's neck. Leon picked her up and moved her into his lap, cradling her and talking to her.
"This is nerve wracking, that much I know. I can't imagine what you're going through, Ada, I know you're scared and hurt. I know the idea of being a mom was one you never wanted to put thought into." He began. "But like I said and will continue to say, this is up to you. I will not have a say in the matter, this is your body we're discussing here."
Just as Ada thought earlier, he managed to put her at ease.
Tinier cries came from her before he made an annoyed sound, wiping her tears and sniffling. "I feel like I'm going to vomit, it's from the stress." "Take it easy, you're okay." Leon kissed her forehead and rubbed her lower back. "I'm so sorry you're scared." He means that.
"I don't know what to do." Ada admitted. Leon nodded, moving her now damp hair out of her smeared face. "What does your head say?" Leon always asks her this when she's conflicted. "That it's smarter to not have a baby in this economy. The child would suffer." "Mhm...and your heart?"
"My heart wants me to keep the child. Raise them, love them...but I just don't know if I am capable of that." True vulnerability.
"Nonsense hun, you'd be a good mom. You've improved so much, and I know you can grow furthermore, and as can I." He's not wrong. Ada has changed, so much. That's why they're engaged at all.
Thinking for a moment, Ada got off of Leon's lap and let out an expire, trying to relax her body and mind as much as she can.
"Do you need some alone time to think about it? Because like I said, I will let you decide and I'll support you no matter what." Leon got off of the bed and ran fingers through his hair and leaning against the bedroom wall.
"No, no...I know what I want to do." Ada officially claimed. Leon smirked but tried to hide it. "Tell me."
Ada went silent for a moment before speaking.
She walked over to Leon and rested her hands on his chest, taking a deep breath and gazing at him.
"We're going to be parents."
