The Netherlands Circus
The Netherlands circus has been touring England and until Sunday was in Hartlepool so as research for our fairground/circus themed module, my friend and I bought tickets and went on Saturday. The main acts were amazing; there were around nine different acts with the clowns in between as each act was preparing to go into the ring. Some of my favourites were the aerial and balancing acts. There were two balancing acts, one using bicycles where a man was riding the bike in different ways ad one by one three people climbed on, they used two bikes in this act, one normal sized and one the size of a shoe box. The other balancing act was a younger boy who was passed various different shaped objects by his assistant and would then climb up onto the unstable tower he had made.
The aerial acts were the best by far, the first was a man and a woman suspended in the air performing acrobatics and were both held up by a rope around the man’s hands. There was a tank of water beneath them which was set on fire and the woman was dropped from the top of the tent into it. The final aerial act was performed by a man with two ropes spinning himself round the circus tent and using his strength to coil himself up to the beginning of the ropes and gradually spin out from it.
The costumes the performers wore were extremely bright and tied in with the colours of the circus tent. People in the same act were wearing different but similar costumes which were tailored to them to suit their body shape. The acts of each performer had to be taken into consideration so for example, the contortionist’s costume looked similar to the others’ but was made from a lycra material to allow her to bend and move fully.
