Aesculus pavia / Red Buckeye
Aesculus × carnea
aka. red horse-chestnut
Artificial hybrid between Aesculus pavia (red buckeye) and Aesculus hippocastanum (horse-chestnut), probably originated in Germany. The name Aesculus has unclear origin (probably from Proto-Indio-European word for 'oak') and carnea comes from the Latin carneus, 'flesh-colored'. Inherits red flowers from red buckeye and has poisonous nuts, flowering in mid-spring. Has many cultivars, such as 'Briotii', 'O'Neil', 'Fort McNair', 'Pendula' and 'Plantierensis'
