Schoolhaus / A4

I've been working on new pieces lately but not in the usual way. For the past 3 months or so, I've been a part of something called Schoolhaus/A4. It's the result of the work of Dan Ibarra of Aesthetic Apparatus and Zak Sally of La Mano (and the band Low). Okay, here's how I see it. Our problems lie not with bad people, but with bad tools. Of course there are bad people, but excessive wealth or excessive poverty do not qualify one as evil. Every one of us have equal potential for evil as much as we do good. We need to stop demonizing each other and look to our overgrown cultural, economic, and technological tools instead. These complex tools, constructed to help us, have now become a thing to themselves. Inflexible cultural tools deny essential human characteristics, like standardized education's disregard for wisdom in learning. Dictatorial technologies can control our lives, like the automobile's power to deform community to suit its needs. (Oh, and don't forget the car's other tendency to kill hundreds daily.) A tyrannical economic tool will use people as a means to its own end, like the pharmaceutical industry's economic necessity to medicate instead of cure. These are evils. Right now, varied forms of these tools are pervasive throughout most every aspect of our society, continuing to supplant the foundations of human living with their own methodology and requirements. This is not just about big business, or small-government, or anti-technology. And it's not just about sustainability, or environmental technology, or local economies either. It's about all of these, it's about pro-humanity. It's about encouraging and authoring tools that enable the natural imperfections, wisdom, versatility, and intimate relationships that allow us to live a human-scale life. -Too Small to Fail
