“ Sorry, Venkman, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought. “
January 2023
So, month one is down and I kinda did and kinda didn't keep up with what I wanted to do for this year.
I did managed to read 2 things, but they weren't what I expected. Original I had planned to read 2 of my printed books from my massive TBR stack, but in the end, I actually ended up reading 2 manhwa's, and one is still ongoing.
I read, Solo Leveling and then Omniscience Reader.
And honestly, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed both of them. I have already put Solo Leveling on my To buy carts for amazon and on top of that, I am looking into possibly even finding copies of the lightnovel. And if/when Omniscience Reader comes out in english I will likely be buying it as well.
So here are some of my thoughts of both!
Solo Leveling:
Normally, I am not a fan of OP(Over Powered) MCs (Main Characters), but honestly with this story I fell in love with Sung Jin-Woo.
I fell in love watching this character grow and fight into the badass that he becomes. The storyline, while mildly predictable due to the genre, was engaging, and honestly threw a few twists that I was not expecting. I enjoyed that the character development, and who this character was at his core in the start of the story, stayed there all the way until the end.
His personality of course is altered through events that take place in the story, but it happens to me, in a surprisingly natural way. While reading, I wasn't confused by why he would make the choices he did, or annoyed by them. It was refreshing.
Now I know the first thought is likely confusion as to why I am talking about this story now, after all this time of it being out, I mean, not only is it 3 books in in English print, but we are looking at a show coming out for it! For me though, it is something kinda big. I was raised to treat any 'popular' piece of media was beneath me, because if others liked it, it obviously was far to 'simple' for my 'big brain.'
Yes, I had 'those' parents that shaped my squishy lil brain as a child. So, lately, I have finally started to take steps to break that ingrained thought process and habit and start stepping outside my bubbles, finally. That is how I decided to try Solo Leveling. The most I had heard was that it had an OP MC and honestly that was it. I understand that the only reason I had heard just that much was due to my slight avoidance and active ignoring things about it.
I regret that, but it did work out for me in the end. I was lucky enough due to not reading it soon, to binge read all of the main story and now I excitedly wait for the side stories.
So this is my little non-spoiler review for Solo Leveling! I encourage others to read it if they want to enjoy a good story with some beautiful artwork.
Now we move on too-
Omniscience Reader:
I was so, so not expecting to enjoy this ongoing story! I had just come off reading Solo Leveling and didn't think I would find something I would like so quickly! I had heard that it was good, but again, like everyone I take things with a grain of salt, but I was surprised.
I have been loving, watching this snarky little dork grow as a character and honestly the surprises that have been revealed in they story, has planted it as one that I would love to one day own, and see evolve like Solo Leveling has.
I won't say much on it as it is still an ongoing project, but I am loving it as it go and I am so excited to see how one day it will end in the far far future!
I recommend both of these for just about anyone to read and enjoy!
Did I ever tell you guys about the simulacra. I should tell you about the simulacra
In my quest for maximum wokefication of aeternalis I wanted to figure out a way to make the ruler rule from both the top and the bottom, so as both the imperator and the one responsible for all the menial tasks (cleaning, transport, etc), because I don't want the mortals responsible for those because the premise of aeternalis is that all the people that are there came in from outside and of their own volition. I mean they can still do the things if they really want to but like. The whole of society doesn't hinge on their preferences. But spirit also can't be in 500 places at once, so my way of going about that was making the simulacra. They're...well they're technically mostly organic but they don't really behave that way. They look like ornate robots, they're basically clones, but they're connected to the outer consciousness shell of the circle and don't have any consciousness of their own. They can perform basic tasks on their own if you give them precise enough instructions (a few years ago I would have called them akin to ai but that phrase has been ruined now), but for anything more complex it's either spirit or the overseer puppeteering them
There's hundreds of them and double the number of backups so if one gets destroyed it literally does not matter. They're dotted all around ae, most of them in settlements, with the highest number obviously in the capital. When they're on standby they also mostly just look like ornamental statues so you wouldn't really notice them until you saw one of them turn their head to follow you with its gaze
Using my free time for productive (read: stupid) purposes
Listen here you little shit.
Just like any other sapient species, aethereals are not a monolith and vary greatly in behaviour and abilities (and of course the most in appearance), but generally they display a significantly higher prowess in spiritual energy wielding than aeternals, by virtue of being entirely made from energy. They're the closest thing aeternalis has to actual demigods and they're treated with the same amount of fear and reverence whenever they manifest themselves, too
