big spoon/little spoon: jax is probably the big spoon as a matter of principle, but he’s a big baby sometimes, and when he’s being a big baby, jacob will be the big spoon to make him feel better

favorite non-sexual activity: they are both far too addicted to strawberry smoothies, so probably drinking those and playing video games together?

who uses all the hot water: jacob when he’s stressed, jax before a big event

most trivial thing they fight over: dear god i did not touch your video games calm the fuck down

who does most of the cleaning: jacob? he cleans up after people without even really realising he's doing it

who calls up the super/landlord when the heat’s not working: jax, but then jacob takes over when he starts getting too snarky

who steals the blankets: jacob. he’s never warm enough up in the north

who leaves their stuff around: neither of them really?

who remembers to buy the milk: jacob

who remembers anniversaries: i want to say jacob, and he def does, but i think jax is secretly very sentimental too

Who cooks normally? jacob. he really loves cooking

How often do they fight? about petty things? pretty often. about not so petty things? not so often

What do they do when they’re away from each other? in the context of their story arc - worry sick that they’re dead or something??

Nicknames for each other? jakey and mr grumpy pants

Who is more likely to pay for dinner? jax because jacob has exactly no money

Who steals the covers at night? jacobbbb

What would they get each other for gifts? jacob would get jax a strawberry smoothie and a new video game. jax would get jacob a strawberry smoothie and a new sketchbook.

Who kissed who first? i guess we’ll find out

Who remembers things? Both of ‘em

Who cusses more? Jax by far

What would they do if the other was hurt? Jacob would do everything he could to make him better again. Jax would do everything he could to seek revenge

Jacob & Jax | Arguments, Storms, and Cuddles

In which I procrastinate writing the thing I’m writing to pracrastinate writing the thing I should be writing.

“It’s a video game, for noviums sake,” Jacob muttered under his breath. He never understood how someone could get so worked up over pixels on a screen, but he had been travelling with Jax for a few weeks now, so he knew better than to ask. “Why don’t you sit down and eat something? We haven’t had meat in weeks.”

“I can’t eat right now,” Jax snapped in return, and Jacob supposed he should’ve known better than to interfere. “Six weeks progress down the fuckin’ drain.”

“Don’t use language like that,” Jacob muttered. He knew it was useless to try, but nothing good came from people using that sort of language. Jax and his fuck the government ideology was going to be the death of him. “Sit and eat something, then you can get back to playing your game, alright?”

“It’s not just a game,” Jax retorted. He was ready to launch into a lecture on the importance of video games and why losing six weeks of progress shouldn’t be taken so lightly, but then it started raining, and that shut him right up. Thunder crackled loudly, lightning illuminated the sky, and rain started pouring by the bucketful, soaking anything that dared cross it. Jax sighed and rubbed his face. Sometimes his magic was a curse rather than a blessing.

Jacob thought one day he’d get used to this. Today, however, was not that day. He shuffled further into the corner of the bus stop, and hoped that wrapping his arms around his legs tight enough would keep out the cold. Jacob looked over at Jax and sighed. “Maybe if you’d find us somewhere to stay rather than playing those games, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

“Maybe if you’d find us somewhere to stay rather than acting like you’re my fucking dad, we wouldn’t be in this situation,” Jax grumbled back. He stopped pacing and sat down, but kept his distance from Jacob. He had never been very good at making friends. Jacob was no exception. “Can I have something to eat?”

Sometimes, Jacob thought it lucky that he’d grown up with so many siblings. It truly gave him the patience he needed to deal with Jax. The blond passed over the leftovers of his dinner, as well as something to drink, and a degradable, wooden fork he’d lifted from a local takeout diner. “Do you need painkillers-” Jacob posed it as a question, but a moment later, he was handing over the small bottle of painkillers as well.

“Thanks,” Jax muttered. He swallowed a couple of painkillers fast, and then started on his food. Maybe Jacob had a point about finding them somewhere to stay next time. Lamb tasted much better when they were inside, safe, and dry.

By the time Jax had finished eating, Jacob was curled up in a ball on the bus stop floor. He always hoped that doing so would keep him warmer. He was always sorely mistaken. Rain was slowly lapping further into the bus stop, and every strike of lightning made him jump. If they were going to be travelling tomorrow, Jacob would need his sleep, but he already knew that ship had long since sailed.

“Get over here,” Jax muttered upon seeing the state Jacob was in. He liked to consider himself an asshole; but from day one, Jacob had been proving that wrong. Jax opened up his cloak so Jacob could get inside of it, and once the younger boy was curled up against his chest, Jax wrapped the cloak around him and gently rubbed his arm. “Not a word.”

Jacob laughed quietly, but he didn’t comment. Jax was a lot of work sometimes - well, all of the time - but it was worth it for moments like these. Even the most difficult people deserved a friend, and Jacob was more than happy to be that person. He cuddled up against Jax’s side and closed his eyes. The sound of the rain lulled him right to sleep. In moments, the boy was snoring against Jax’s chest, and if Jax had a big smile on his face. Well. That was nobody’s business but his own, now was it?

❝ Somewhere within the tower sat Jax. Six foot three and dressed head to toe in black; the boy was the splitting image of your cliche ‘bad boy’ character. This was, of course, totally intentional. Jax liked to think of himself as a bit of an emotionally unavailable bad boy, but in reality, the guy was nothing but a nerd. There may have been some truth to the emotionally unavailable bit, but he surrounded himself with nothing but technology and darkness day in and day out. That was to be expected. All in all, the boy loved climbing things and hacking things and drinking fruit smoothies, and he was really quite sweet when you got past the badass facade. Just sometimes, that takes awhile. ❞

The Aether Chronicles Playlists: Fragile Destiny edition!

Author Suzanne Lazear: FRAGILE DESTINY has a lot of love and kissing. However, there’s also a heck of a lot of change going on in this book. Lots of coming to terms with the end of one chapter of one’s life and the beginning of a new one (even more so than in book 2). Characters have to grapple not only with rough choices but the consequences of their actions and I hope I captured some of that in this list.

Can you guess what songs go with which characters and scenes? I try very hard not to repeat songs on book playlists and there’s a lot of crossover (Fun’s Some Nights is Kevighn’s anthem for the entire series). However, I had to include Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. This is such a beautiful, romantic song and I think it goes perfectly with a particular scene that I’ve been waiting three books to write (and I know you’ve been waiting for it, too.)
