if there was only one word your family could use to describe you, it would be dreamer. no matter the time of day, no matter where you were, you were constantly in your own world; imagining anything and everything.
whenever someone would ask you about your thoughts, you’d giggle before saying “it’s a secret!”. crepus would chuckle, while your brothers would whine and pester you to tell them; and much to their dismay, you never gave in.
your favorite thing to dream about was you and your two brothers, off being adventurers together. you liked to imagine that even when you all grew up you’d still be together, still the unbreakable trio as your father put it.
when you weren’t daydreaming about your future with your brothers, you were dreaming about your life in general. would you stay in mondstat with your father and brothers? or would you move to another nation, all on your own?
crepus had always told you and your brothers that it would be good to “spread your wings and fly” when you grew up; saying that barbatos would support your future decisions without question.
of course, you couldn’t always be left daydreaming. your father knew it wasn’t healthy to solely rely on escaping reality as a coping mechanism, but he didn’t know how to help you cope in better ways. luckily, kaeya and diluc did.
“i hate you! you’re the reason why mother is dead!”
“don’t say that!”
“shut up kaeya! if he hadn’t been born we’d still have our mother!”
“i-i-”
“shut up! just shut up! i don’t want to hear it!”
diluc stormed off, leaving you and kaeya in silence. at least until your hiccups broke it, soon turning into loud sobs as you fell to your knees.
kaeya rushed over, dropping to his knees next to you, pulling you into his side as he pet your head as if you were a cat.
“don’t listen to him, okay?” he whispered, kissing the top of your head after.
all you could do was cry into his chest, clutching your shirt above your heart tightly. the pain was unbearable, the words diluc said cutting into every fiber of your being.
“y/n! wake up!” diluc said as he shook you harshly while kaeya was in your fathers room waking him up as well. it wasn’t the first time you’ve had a nightmare, so they knew by now what to do when you had one.
you stirred slightly, groaning lightly while pushing diluc’s hand away, “stop shaking me..” you muttered, sleep still plaguing you.
“wake up!” he said again, still shaking you, albeit lightly.
kaeya soon returned with crepus in tow, climbing into your bed behind you. you’d think that he was the one who had the nightmares and not yourself.
he wrapped his arms around you, pressing a light kiss to the back of your head, “we’re here for you.”
diluc climbed into the bed as well, this time in front of you. he clasped your hands in his, rubbing his thumb on the back of your hands.
crepus sat on the edge of the bed, simply watching his sons. he knew that he didn’t need to say anything, kaeya and diluc were your anchors after a nightmare.
it didn’t take long for all three of you to fall asleep together, a soft smile adorning crepus’ face at the sight.
he slowly stood up, leaning over the bed to kiss yours and your brothers foreheads. “goodnight, little ones.” he said, returning to his bedroom to sleep once more.
the next morning, you didn’t talk about your nightmare; you never did. your brothers used to push you for answers, but they quickly learned to leave you alone.
besides, it’s not like you wanted to tell diluc he was the main focus of your nightmare. especially when the words he said weren’t lies.
so. i wasn't gonna do nanowrimo because a)november is very busy for me but more importantly b)I Don't Write Like That. Like, sure I can "make" myself edit, but writing? It comes out when it comes out. Forcing myself to write 50k words just means forcing myself to write 50k words that Do Not Vibe. (And also stress.)
However, on the flip side...I do have two sequels to Aether and Exile to finish 😅 I'm at about 20k on one and 30k on the other (with a lot of that to likely be weeded out in editing cause...I think I went into way too much detail about a lot of things). So...maybe doing this would serve as motivation to help me finish those and get them published?
