…What is the generallay ethical standpoint when it comes to basing something off a game like Adventure Forward which has such a problematic history?
Because recently I started work on an independent story called The Astronomer’s Gaze, to which many of its aspects like certain important world building elements are based off Adventure Forward. Now at the time where I first stumbled upon Adventure Forward (literally two weeks ago), I didn’t know anything about it others than “okay it’s an old game that no one plays anymore”. However, upon doing some research and learning about the game’s VERY turbulent and downright problematic history, especially revolving around the creator and how many people were affected by the actions of the creator, im left wondering if I should keep the current plotline of TAG or change all the parts of TAG that are based off of AF.
A general overview of what In TAG is based off AF is:
- the premise for some designs (ie: immortal beings having a symbol for their face + the concept of the symbol being able to break)
-important events tied to the lore (someone gets falsely imprisoned for no reason for a ridiculously long time)
-some character aspects (tutorial guy who ends up being the villain, guy who was set up to be the big bad is actually your ally, etc)
-major locations (Acts 1 and 2 of TAG take place in a small town + magic deity place in the sky respectively, and AF1 and 2 take place in Maytown and the Sky Emporium)
Heck three of TAG’s characters have aspects of their design and major events be parodied off their inspirations in AF.
However, the characters of TAG are all their own characters with an independent personality, worldbuilding, and overall the style of TAG is planned to be different from AF. But seeing how much the situation behind AF has hurt and traumatised so many really makes me feel bad for making TAG a loose recreation/reimagining/remix of AF and I fear that TAG’s lore and worldbuilding are too similar to AF’s despite efforts to change some details. And if I were to change those details even more or entirely then the whole plotline would fall apart :(
Of course there will be disclaimers that TAG inevitably started because of me discovering AF and starting work on TAG without knowing what happened with AF so that those who were affected can choose to not touch TAG in the first place if they choose to do so, but I honestly don’t know what should be done
I would like to hear your thoughts if possible :)
