Humanity had sought to conquer and control magic instead of trying to truly understand it like they did centuries ago. Magical creatures were hunted down to be used for ingredients and experiments, which caused most to go into hiding, themselves off from humanity. However, magic could not be closed off forever, as there was always some way for it to be learned. A woman who had been blessed by the fey, unaware of her past connection, inherited magical abilities she wanted to understand and learn. It was raw uncoupted magic which humans could not understand, so she decided to seek out beings from legend that could.
Stone jutted from the mountainside like the spine of some ancient beast, and beyond it stretched only cold wind and endless stars. Snow moved in slow spirals across the ledge, catching faint light from the heavens above. The human stood alone at the summit as she pulled her cloak tight. Samantha was attempting a summoning ritual based on a legend of communicating with Star-touched elves.
She had etched the runes into the rock by hand, tracing them with glowing rose-pink light, stone softened beneath her touch. Above her, the stars slowly shifted into what she had been waiting for. The ginger had studied their movement for months, waiting for this single alignment spoken of only in whispers: the moment when the sky itself remembered a name. Samantha's fingers trembled as she placed the final mark before she rose to her feet.
The woman closed her eyes, focusing as she began the invocation, the words felt fragile leaving her lips. Opening her eyes, the human glanced around as the wind fell silent. For a long moment, nothing happened until snow froze midair, hanging like pale stars of its own. The circle beneath her feet pulsed once, responding not to the words but the stars above as if they were suddenly glowing more intensely.
