One of my favorite things about Afflicted was watching them systemically try and fail at every benign vampire archetype, but by far the funniest and my favorite moment was when they just straight up failed to steel blood bags from a blood bank because they’re lousy thieves

I like Afflicted (2013)

It’s not shy about being a vampire movie and I like that the characters figure it out halfway through the film. I thought their reactions to the vampire transformation were really understandable. I like Derek and Audrey as characters. The vampire superpower scenes were cool, and I thought they produced a lot of fun special effects on a limited budget. The two things I don’t really understand are why Cliff came back when the other victims didnt (Audrey feeds once every 4-5 days and grew up before the invention of color photography but Derek is the only person she ever turned) and why she waited so long to contact Derek when it was clearly dangerous to let him go through the change with no information about what was happening to him. Still a super enjoyable movie though

Spooktober Week 3: Oops All Vampires

Vampires have inspired peoples' imaginations for centuries, and they've haunted the screen since the earliest days of cinema. This week I only watched movies featuring my favourite monsters.

Day 15: Afflicted (2013)

I love when vampirism is actually an eternal curse. You can't be killed, you can't starve, you can't be cured. If you don't choose a victim, your body will choose for you, and you're saddled with making this choice forever.

Day 16: Dracula (1931)

Such a cozy movie. Just an absolutely quintessential Halloween film.

Day 17: Let the Right One In (2008)

I think this might be my new favourite vampire movie. It has everything; Gender™, vampirism as a disability, the tragic need for companionship, complicated morality, and so much more. Ough I'm gonna be thinking about this movie forever.

Day 18: I Like Bats (1986)

I'll never get sick of movies where a beautiful woman kills a bunch of sex pests. I love how the first time Isabella meets a man who cares about her special interest, she immediately becomes obsessed with him. Autistic queen.

Day 19: Nosferatu (2024)

Truly a movie for Freaks and Weirdos only. Love how I've seen people saying that this is both too erotic and not erotic enough. Clearly they haven't experienced the horrors of desiring something that disgusts you.

Day 20: So Vam (2021)

If I made a movie when I was 17 it probably would've been a lot like this. I could critique it, but I'm a grown ass adult and I'm not gonna shit on a teenager for making something that clearly meant a lot to them. More people should make bad movies, it's the only way you can learn how to make good ones.

Day 21: Sinners (2025)

Absolutely gorgeous movie. Music truly is the universal language that connects humanity's past, present, and future. I knew this was gonna be good but it still floored me with how good it is. It's heartfelt, it's sexy, it's tense, and it's bloody as all hell. Perfect way to round off vampire week.
