"I want to collect BJDs, but they're so expensive!"

It's tiny, but I've found a great BJD option for people who don't have the money for a resin cutie, as long as you don't mind a blind box.

Penny's Box (link is for US buyers) is a line of blind-box dolls that are about 6" tall. They are tension-strung BJDs, but because they are made of PVC and ABS plastics, they are WAY cheaper than resin dolls. They also have painted-on eyes instead of inset eyes, and their hair is a solid block of plastic. (You can buy an optional head cap for $5 that allows you to use a brushable wig instead, though, if you prefer.)

3 sets of these dolls have been released so far, with more to come: Nature's Secret, School Hunting, and Teennar.

Each doll comes with a full outfit and some extra hands for posing with. BJDs tend to be more of a "make-your-own-character kit" vibe, so they often don't come with hair, eyes, clothes, or paint. These are ready-to-go right out of the box.

The doll also can fit into Pukipuki/Obitsu11 clothes, so it's easy to find or make extra outfits that will fit them. If you buy more than one doll, you can mix and match the hair and clothing, which is also fun. While the doll itself is a surprise, there are 6 common dolls and 1 super-rare "secret" doll in each set, and you can see all 6 common dolls on the page you order from. You can also order a full set of 6, if you really want. (That option's a bit beyond my budget at the moment, which is also why I have so few resin-babies.)

Here are some reviews I've found, so you can see the quality level of the dolls and get a better feel for their size:

Again, I know that these aren't for everyone. But if you're looking for a cute ball-jointed doll that costs US$20-25 plus shipping, this is it. They're cute, they give you a good feel for how a ball-jointed body moves, and they're decent quality for the price. Plus, as of this writing (October 2022), they are working on a CENTAUR set, which should release early next year. (I am totally stoked--I love centaur dolls, even though they're really tricky to make clothes for.)

Resin Ball Jointed Doll (BJD) Companies who offer darker skin tones for less than 40$

Since this topic concerns many collectors who want to collect bjds em with more skin tones than "normal", "normal pink", "peach" etc i decided to make this post where I'll link LEGIT bjd companies who straight up offer tan/dark skin tones or sell for less than 40$+ with pictures. I know that +40$ is a bit much on top of 200$ or 500$ but its the cheapest I can find for most brands, unfortunately. I also couldn’t find great pictures from the companies so I credit every time I use someone’s photo but all the rest is from the company ^^ Enjoy and feel free to add anything I forgot!

Hey bjd people! I want to start collecting weird dolls and I love all the unique bjds that are out there. Does anyone have any recommendations for affordable (ideally under $200) “strange” looking (LEGIT) bjds?

Don't know if anyone wrote about it already, but 5stardoll has a doll for $99 in their offer. It seems to be one of those fashion type dolls. Not sure about the size but she is a bjd. She wears 8 mm eyes, so I'm guessing she's anything between chic line and soom fairies?

Zephyra got a new wig AND face up! I really like how her face up turned out this time. The wig is from Cancan J-Series in milky white. I brushed it out and braided it. I’m debating adding more braids to hit honestly. Maybe.

Don’t Break the Bank - Part 1

BJDs are expensive works of art. Even the more affordable dolls can be expensive for many people, as conversion rates can double, triple or even quadruple the price tag! For those who suffer from these conversion rates, or have their own financial reasons, this hobby can be quite difficult to navigate! Luckily though, there are companies and artists out there that offer dolls for a reduced price tag. While this is a topic that is widely discussed in the hobby, we thought that it would be a good idea to list and link some of these companies. 

This is Part 1, as there are so many companies and artists to list! We will list 3 companies/artists per post.

Note: Some companies can even be less expensive than what we are listing here! Companies with taobao pages or native-language pages often have an altered price tag! We will try to take note of some of these while listing some companies! We will also include a photo from each company so you can get an aesthetic idea!

I heard that Impldoll's dolls are cheaper, yet they're almost $300 like lots of other companies. Is there a way to get them cheaper that I'm missing?

The reality is that they are still 'cheaper' dolls. They're on the more expensive end of cheap dolls but they are still cheaper than a lot of dolls out there. If you're looking for more affordable doll options perhaps try this list here.
