what would you have done instead of building the ring?
I would have expanded it from the sides, which it looks like they are doing but I can't really tell. Anything I've looked up for this project is fake concepts but nothing concrete.
The ring really isn't doing much. The capacity isn't even that grand to have a major effect. It's for a quick Tawaf (my guess) and that's it. I would not ruin the beauty because of something like that.
