Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul – Introspective – Why I love this show so much?
“So Virgin Soul is finally here and is great…And I want to make a little post about it, but it’s too early to say something meaningful about it, moreover, what can even say about it? Even with the first season in mind there isn’t a lot meat to chew. Yes, the series is wonderful and goddamn entertaining…but, looking it with a cold mind Is nothing too special …medieval fantasy…angels…demons…an apocalyptic CG dragon …a strong rivalry between main character… wait, they are adults (well, they age is ambiguous but they point is that they are definitely not fucking teenagers, that’s awesome)…a lovable rogue bounty hunter…a white knight bounty hunter…Joan of arc references…mmm, ok, it’s not bad, but still, I need something more…a kickass afro which rivals Mutta’s…
...Just look them...how you not love those buffoons...
...a cute? loli zombie voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro…a talking duck…and, no, it’s a cliché, it’s nothing special, except when is doing right, and here is do it perfectly….well, fuck it, I’ll just say it…FAAAAAAAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
…Fuck it the cold mind, in some occasion the hot blooded passion is the only thing that matters.”
I love Bahamut, the first season was one of the most entertain and memorable things that I saw in 2014 and now that the sequel is airing is time to make a little overview on both show and explain why both are fucking awesome.
…So there are certain elements that are not much important for our appreciation of the series (Spoiler alert…the first ones). The story, the actual plot here is more a means to an end, more functional that good, a vehicle to know this lovable and sympathetic cast and their quirky adventures.
...Kaisar you are just too adorable...
...As I said it before, Bahamut isn’t the biggest series in the room, its story is pretty average and neither of its characters is specially complex or meaningful…but his world have enough distinctive elements to give it a distinct personality, its own attitude that make it stand out in regard to others, more plain fantasy worlds, from the architecture, the music (When was the last time that you listened Flamenco in a fantasy setting), the supernatural aspect, the dynamics between Angels, Demons and Humans, etc. its characters go for a more simplistic approach, but they have enough hidden depths and relatable traits to acknowledge them as people and not just anthropomorphic beings that speak lines and do things, their designs are fairly memorable, all of them have interesting and funny personalities, great dynamics between each other...
...Zombie loli is best girl...
...and an amount of charisma that grabs the audience from episode one.
And that would be the best word to define Bahamut; Sheer Charisma.
GENESIS was just a really endearing show, its characters, its music and animation, its action scenes (I’ll just say one thing, fights on horses on rooftops, how you don’t love that). It was perfectly executed series that wanted the audience have a good time and it was impossible for me don’t enter in its game.
…and fortunately enough, Virgin Soul plays with the same set of rules.
Correct, we are talking about a sequel that is a direct follow up, with a story far more solid than before despise that the most enjoyable part of the series was just see the character dicking around (But depending in how it plays its cards in the next chapters, we may have something pretty good and memorable in our hands), the great and magnificent Favaro is unfortunately a minor player in this new series, and there are a bunch of elements that clash with the continuity stablish by GENESIS…and yet, the charm of the series is still there. See this bunch of lovable idiots just be themselves.
The story has more to say about itself, is a plus of course, but Bahamut still is those minor moments between the characters and see where are they standing 10 years after the events of GENESIS.
Seen Rita as a Doctor and Rocky, the cut hand of Kaisar in GENSIS, as her assistant, Azazel playing the role of anti-hero wanting to protect his fellows demons, Hamsa making stand of arm wrestling with the new comer Nina, and how forget Nina, she may be not Favaro (But been honest, how you compete with that magnificent afro) but she is an addition more that welcome to the cast, energetic, funny, an interesting quirk and Kaisar, more mature and without the angst issues from the first season, but still struggling with his moral dilemma about good and evil…
The dinner scene of the last chapter (Episode 3) resumes the things better, Rita, Rocky, Nina, Bacchus and Hamsa, just having a nice meal with each other, and that it’s the core that is what made GENESIS so especial to me, just an enjoyable and well-crafted series who has enough uniqueness to stand through the test of time…and I happy to say that is more than present in Virgin Soul.
Virgin Soul may have a few “buts”, in regard to its continuity, a more focused plot, the lack of Favaro, however Bahamut is still Bahamut, a show that simply steal my heart.
...There still 21 episodes to go (supposedly) and I’m eager to see what the show have prepared to us.
