I love that Sukuna finally voiced what I've been saying all this time. Yuuji has the strongest soul in JJK, no one compares. It was clear that Yuuji bothers Sukuna a lot and finally Sukuna explained why.
I really like how Gege is stressing that only Yuuji has a true connection to Sukuna, none of these other people matter to him.
People who don't care about anything but themselves or their immediate social group, really can't stand those who care, those who believe in something. Yuuji is the first true mirror Sukuna has ever encountered, one that reflects to Sukuna the hollowness of his soul.
Sukuna felt nothing when he killed Gojou because Gojou was as hollow as him. Gojou's ideals were only words, not followed through with anything and he abandoned them for the thrill of the fight with Sukuna. Kashimo never pretended to stand for anything and thus they also meant nothing to Sukuna.
Higuruma stood for something, Sukuna was there when he talked to Yuuji. Higuruma did get lost but in the end he remembered that he stood for something.
And Higuruma, like Yuuji, used to be a normie not so long ago. His progress is indeed impressive.
And look who Sukuna recalls when he feels sad about Higuruma dying (he's not there yet to acknowledge that he's sad he killed someone XD), he recalls Jougo. The last person he'd killed who actually stood for something.
I wish the fandom understood that the way that the themes of JJK go, Gojou could've never killed Sukuna. He was of the same ilk as Sukuna, equally hollow living only seeking his own entertainment, probably even more arrogant than Sukuna, but less talented and extremely reckless. And Gojou was partially in denial, he pretended that his ideals mattered to him, that they weren't a band-aid put on the gaping hole that was his soul.
Sukuna actually cares about killing Yuuji, he cares about getting rid of that mirror that exposes him to himself. Makes him see how lacking he is. None of the others showed him any of that. Gojou and Kashim fought him for the title of the strongest, Yorozu for a prestigious marriage. They all wanted the status associated with Sukuna.
And Yuuji never cared about that, he talked back to Sukuna, called him out on his bull shit. And to Yuuji strength is worthless in itself, it matters if it can be used to help someone.
There's a lot of people like Sukuna nowadays, you see them everywhere online. People who will go out of their way to mock others for caring about anything because they are unsettled by the mere motion that someone can be invested in something. And because it makes them feel bad. If they were truly fully content in their hedonistic and/or nihilistic existence they wouldn't care how others feel or what others do. Like them, Sukuna suspects that maybe the lives of those who care about something are more satisfying.
It took Yuuji for Sukuna to even realise that he could grow as a person.
I love how they mutually ruin each other's lives. Gege really intertwined them nicely.
A Difference of Swords (Fate/Samurai spoilers ramble)
Spoilers for Fate/Samurai Remnant, and probably Fate/stay night but that's been out longer, but short spoiler free version, Iori Miyamoto, and Shirou Emiya, should never, NEVER, meet each other
For those unaware let us start in release order, Shirou Emiya.
Shirou 'is', a sword. In universe, his very being, due to several complex and unimportant factor, is made of swords, to the point that a bad ending in Fate includes his body erupting in blades, killing him. However this is not what I mean. I mean, Shirou is a sword, in that at the start, he is a tool. He wants to be of use to others, while having no idea of his own wants. A sword does not choose how it is used, simply that it is. At most, he would want to be a sword, used to save others. He wants to, due to his personal survivor's guilt and mental damage, to save every person before him, asking to be saved. This causes no amount of trouble for himself, including a copy of a future, bitter, traumatized version of himself wanting to kill him to prevent the harm these ideals had caused. But, at his core, that is what Shirou wants. To be of use to others, and to save them. For he is a sword, a tool to be used.
This, however, is not the Way of the Sword. This, Iori would argue, is not a sword's purpose.
Iori Miyamoto, the protagonist of Fate/Samurai Remnant, is the adopted son and student of Musashi Miyamoto, the famed swordsman and philosopher. In this series, Iori is the surviving orphan, of a town attacked and purged by bandits, and the bandits in turn, purged by a wandering swordsman. We do not learn who this 'sword saint' was, all we know is that a young boy was saved, and became obsessed, with surpassing the sword he saw that night. And in the bad ending, which is only unlockable after beating the game at least once, we learn that Iori is not a well boy. He, as he puts it, looks kind and warm, but he is not kind. He can project kind, he can present functional, and when with his fellow adopted sibling, Kaya, he can even go with the flow of being, 'normal'. But he is not a normal man. He is a student of the Way of the Sword. And the way of the sword, is not a path of protecting. A sword is only ever made, to kill. A sword can be used to protect, a sword can be used, and the user can choose not to kill. But when a sword is made, for the purpose to be used as a sword, that purpose, is to end lives around them. That is the path Iori wishes to walk, and most days fights to keep in check. Iori is a man who wants to perfect his skills, in order to kill more perfectly. Iori, as Musashi put it when alive, was born in the wrong age. If he had been born decades before, this would make him a hero. When born in a stagnant age of peace, as the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate generally was, it simply makes him a sword demon, waiting.
Shirou, and Iori, should never meet each other. They should never be left in a room together, never left to talk about their experiences with their Sabers, never study each other's fighting styles. They will, eventually, learn each other's nature. They will, eventually, come to conflict with each other. They will, try to kill each other, and it will destroy each other. It will end, most times than not, with both of their deaths, be it in the exchange of blows, or one killed for striking down the other. ... But that's just me, I might be reading too much into things.
Personality: Himari is known in her family to be very approachable and light hearted, often indulging into the insanity that happens on a daily basis around her home. As she is also seen as one of the more mature siblings she is often relied upon for a myriad of reasons, from homework to singularities Himari will be one of the first options, just like her mother she will always fulfill any promise/contract she makes.
When NFF businesses are involved a complete 180 happens, her usual warm smile being replaced for either a cold stare or depending on the type of business a smirk that makes Koyanskaya proud whenever she gets her way on negotiations, she is very ambitious and clever wanting to expand NFF as much as possible but due to influences from her father and siblings she seeks to do so through (mostly) clean and fair means… unless she has been ticked off by a particularly nasty individual/organization in these cases she will use every dirty trick she can think of to screw them over as much as possible while getting as much as she can in return.
Bio: Though Koyanskaya and Ritsuka’s relationship did not start on the best of terms with all the attempted murder, poisoning and a lot more, same as with other enemy servants chaldea received her with open arms and ritsuka was willing to give her a second chance, after an incident involving a stolen potion from Qin Shi Huang that ended with Ritsuka “taming” Koyanskaya, Himari and Natasha were born.
Himari was always fascinated by her mother’s work, and as the older of the twins (even if by a little) she was to be the main heir to her mother’s NFF branch, first on her list was to expand the company into the servant universe proper, as her mother had not been able to do it so Himari took this as a test to show her mother she was capable of running NFF. While this extension was on development she kept working with the mages association and the regular human world under NFF, though due to their success a lot of assassins were sent from similar companies for both her and Koyanskaya, and even if they never succeeded the constant threat was annoying so Himari usually has one of her siblings act as security, preferably Calhoun or Percy as she liked the idea of having her own personal knight and she knew they could be trusted no matter the situation.
Thanks to her father being personally acquainted with the amazoness CEO she was able to secure a great deal so their products could be distributed anywhere amazoness could reach, everything from weapons to mercenary services NFF could provide it at a very high quality, soon they became a big name to rival already established companies such as the reformed shinkage-ryu. Himari has met with their leader Byakuya a few times already and managed to make a deal for them to work together, as even if they expanded very quickly NFF had not been able to get a lot of personnel that could handle the insanity of the servant universe and whatever assets they did have were usually booked very quickly causing them to miss a lot of work. The shinkage-ryu mercenaries would take whatever job NFF couldn’t take making both of them more business in the end and also making one of their biggest competitors a partner. Though the partnership has gone well Himari still had a weird feeling whenever she meets with Byakuya a sort of… Familiarity, even if she is sure they have never met before she started making business with them.
Other stuff:
Himari possesses her mother’s independent manifestation ability, allowing her to go into different worlds and timelines this has proven very useful in her business in the servant universe as she doesn’t have to rely on Jin to get there, and also to meet a lot of her “extended family”.
She has been trained by Koyanskaya in the use of firearms and magic for self defense, though usually she leaves any fighting that happens to her current bodyguard while she stays in the back as support if it’s required.
Himari has a tail but she prefers to keep it hidden away as she feels it doesn’t go as well with her style. Also making it look pretty and presentable takes way too much time.
Besides being her bodyguard Percy also provides Himari with his shed scales as well as a lot of swords and other blades. Dragon scales and ESPECIALLY Albion’s scales have many uses from building materials to energy sources and as Percy treats them as little more than clipped nails he has no problem with giving then away for free, Himari still pays Percy be it food or actual money as this alone gives her so much revenue it feels bad taking them for nothing. even when the swords are of “lower quality” according to Percy, they are still enchanted with his flames making them superior to almost any other blade available in the market.
Relationships:
Ritsuka: Daddy is really amazing going through all of that singularity and lostbelt business as just a regular human, i can’t imagine anyone else being able to handle it. I really have to think of s way to thanks him for the amazoness deal maybe a cruise or trip for him and mom… On second thought maybe that is not a good idea more siblings might lead to a power struggle later on.
Koyanskaya (light): She has taught me all i know about making business even if her methods are a little more underhanded I cannot deny their effectiveness, she apparently was a lot worse before dad “tamed” her, Whatever that means. But i still can’t believe they got married with everything mom had done before coming to Chaldea… Love sure is weird.
Natasha: I owe a lot of my success to her, our productivity went through the roof ever since she took over research and development. I do wish she would tone down the mad scientist bit little but if it makes us more money i guess it’s fine.
Dobrynya: it’s thanks to grandma i was able to run NFF my way, seeing the usually undefeatable mom get treated like a little girl sure was something i did not expect so see… Though i guess the same thing happens to me whenever she scolds me.
Finn: Finny, Finnegan. I heard you were trying to get Percy to do business with you before, too bad the second you put a contract on his face that was doomed to fail he doesn’t bother with those you see. Plus he is already my personal bodyguard, even if you don’t have powers i won’t go easy on you I’ll show you who can run NFF better.
Thiazi: I’m really surprised at how good he is with getting monster materials, i know he is a demigod and all but he claims he never uses magic when hunting. It’s great to have so many capable siblings, and i can even bring him into business meetings thanks to his mother etiquette lessons. Contracting him was really one of the best decisions I’ve done.
I was waiting for someone to make Light Koyan’s deepest desires come true, and I’m not disappointed in the outcome in the slightest! You do have me wondering what this ‘Potion Incident’ is that was so….bombastic as to get the two hitched together despite Gudao’s immense reasons to avoid temptation. Was it another case of 'Potion of Arousal’ , like that one time (in fanon) Gil gave such to his Master and it ended up in the hands of Kiara? Because I can easily see that be the reason for a rather fierce taming session that begat many an offspring!
Personality: Closest to the vanilla Tamamo in terms of personality. Goofy, cute, and peppy. The only difference is that she is a very competitive fighter who loves competition. She will often challenge other heroic spirits to improve her fighting experience. Wants to go with her father on missions the most and will get into fights with pretty much anyone she doesn’t like. And depending on the person, she may end up liking them if they beat her.
Other Stuff: The middle child when it comes to the gifts she received from mom. Can shapeshift her body to become as hard as meteoric ore, generate whirlwinds, and fire laser beams. Is actually built like an Amazon, can beat you in a fight.
Bio: Dawn is a natural born fighter, if the rule of the animal kingdom is survival of the fittest, then she is someone who embraces that ideal. A hand to hand brawler that wants to fight and take down strong opponents, be they servants, phantasmal beasts, or even divine spirits. She has received training from Li Shuwen, Chiron, Beowolf, and Martha in the art of fists.
Her battle style includes a variety of movesets such as rush attacks, pressure point disabling, boxing, mixed material arts, and the dreaded Polygamist Casteration Fist. Her sparring partners are Mordred, Canies, and Pollux. Due to this heavy focus on hand to hand combat, she has little desire to hone her mystical gifts that she received from her mother. While she has the ability to use curses and elemental attacks, she rarely employs them in battle, even though combining the two would dramatically increase her destructive potential.
Rather than look up to either of her parents, her role model is the original Tamamo no Mae. To her, the good wife is someone to be revered, and her origin Amaterasu is a deity deserving of great worship for her. While she is very aware that they are thinly related at best, she strives to follow their example to the best of her ability, especially when it comes to Tamamo and her fighting style.
If there’s one thing that her parents each rubbed off on her, it is her mothers ruthlessness, and her fathers sense of justice. She will stomp her enemies into the ground like her mother, and she will defend the weak like her father.
Quotes:
“I can do this all day.”
“If there’s anyone bothering you, point me in their direction.”
“Oi, is that son of Mor*** playing pranks on people again!? What? I just wanna talk with him, yeah just a little talk.”
“About to drop a Stone Cold Stunner on this dude?”
“My type of guy is one who is built and who lifts.”
Relationships:
Koyanskaya of Dark: Mother is strong in that she is able to command powerful beasts to do her bidding. And the fact that I inherited strength from her is something I am very proud of.
Father: Father is strong in that he was able to go through that entire journey and make it out still smiling. In that sense, he is the strongest person I know.
Finn: Big brother is as trustworthy as he looks, what that means is up to interpretation. But likes just say you can trust him enough to keep his word. And in the end, there is strength in the art of negotiation.
Bronya: Little sister is a raw container of untapped potential. She is stronger than she relizes. But her fear of ending up like mother holds her back. I genuinely want to help her in that regard.
Nastasia: Grandmother is as amazing as she says, no one can do anything. But she can do many things other people can’t do. I love it whenever we get to fight together.
Mordred: Every time we arm wrestle I always end up beating her. So she comes back every week to try and win again. A competitive mindset is always good for bettering oneself. But I fear she might become obsessed over this. That, and I fear what might happen if I admit the fact that I’m only barely trying.
Name: Finn
**Age:**16(Oldest Triplet)
Personality: Has his mother’s business mindset and charm(if you can call it that). Very charismatic and Persuasive. Is very good at winning arguments, even if he is fundamentally in the wrong he can still make it sound like he’s right.
Other Stuff: the one who inherited the least amount of power from his mother. At best he can pull things out of his personal reality marble and use them for combat among other things. To make up for it he had firearm training from Light, but is nowhere near as skilled as her. He will turn into a baby the moment his mother pets and shows him physical affection. Mama’s boy.
Bio: The Oldest of Yaskaya’s litter of children and the brains of the siblings. If his mother is the capable secretary and CEO of NFF, then he is the capable COO. He is already an expert at fostering business relationships and contractual relationships. It is this skill and talent that Yaskaya hopes to foster, in hopes that one day he succeeds her as head of the company.
A natural schemer who is clearly not trustworthy at first glance. He mainly sees in people what use they have for him and how they can benefit him and his goals. He puts on an honest inviting smile when conversing with people, while hiding an evil grin underneath it. That is not to say he will not keep his word or use verbal loopholes to get around contracts. Like his mother he keeps his word to the letter.
Because he takes mostly after his mom, he has little from his father in terms of good influence. But what little he does goes a long way. He will always strive to create a healthy workplace without a toxic environment. Frat Boy culture is his worst enemy. Simply put, Finn hates abuse and complete exploitation. While he may use people, he doesn’t do it in a way that leaves them without nothing and always makes sure they receive something in return.
Finn is more or less a True Neutral from his perspective. Not the best person on the planet, but far from the worst.
Quotes: “Would you like to enter into a business contract with NFF services? As COO I can tell you all the benefits about partnering with our company.”
“A person’s look is everything when it comes to business, the more attractive someone is, the better they are at negotiation. So I make sure everyone wants to look at this handsome face.”
“I’m being suss? Whatever do you mean, I’m just an honest businessman who wants to make his mother proud.”
“NFTs? You saying I should invest in that!? Are you trying to get on my bad side!? I’m not stupid, I was born at night but not LAST night buddy!”
Relationships:
Koyanskaya of Dark: “Mother is without a doubt my role model, I practically learned everything from her. Business practices, Corporate espionage, how to destroy rival companies, internally and externally, you name it, I know it! One of my greatest joys is hearing her paise me and give me hugs and headpats!”
Father: Dad? I honestly feel a little guilty that I didn’t spend more time with him. It’s true I’m not as close with him as I am with mom, but that doesn’t mean I want nothing to do with him. ITs just that, from my viewpoint, dad is kinda boring. Then again, he does have contracts with hundreds of servants, so that alone should show he is not a complete bore.
Nastasia: Grandma dotes on me and the others whenever she’s around. I would say that it’s embarrassing every time she gives me bear hugs. But at this point I’ve gotten used to the pain, and besides, mother would get mad if I didn’t return her affection.
Koyanskaya of Light: She always provides me with weapons and arms whenever I need them for…business reasons. She even provides me at a discounted price! The catch? She asks that I don’t call her auntie. It makes her feel old.
Dawn: My little sister is the one who punches first and asks questions later. I have very little need for her use of brute force and demolishing enemies as opposed to negotiation. That being said, there are people in this world who will not listen to verbal reason, which is when physical reason is required.
Bronya: There are times when I feel like mothers authority is wasted on someone like her. All that power and she refuses to use it. In that sense we are opposites, I embraced my legacy as one of mothers progenry, while she resents it. Still, she is my sister, so I mustn’t think lowly of her. Father I’d rather not get an earful from father.
Queen of Sheba: A very reliable business partner. If you ask me, shes more efficient as a businesswomen than a ruler.
Name: Bronya
**Age:**16(Youngest Triplet)
Personality: Timid and fearful of her powers and lineage as a child of a beast. Usually she does not want to fight people and would rather stay at home. Aside from her siblings she does not socialize very much or wants to get close to others for fear of finding out just what kind of being she is. Aside from all that she tries her best to get along with everyone as best she can. She is closest with her father.
Other Stuff: The one who has inherited the most in terms of power from the mother, yet the one most afraid to use them. She can manifest two more tails and fly helicopter style. Has a high rank presence concealment which she uses to make people look over her in public. Only her dad is allowed to comb her hair, since he does it best. Does not like it when people touch her tail.
Bio: Koyanskaya of Dark has the ability to create life as demonstrated during the Tunguska Reality Marble Event. As such she was about to manipulate how her kids would be born, so it is not a coincidence that Bronya was born as the one with the most potential as someone to succeed her as a beast. But creating a Beast Candidate is not as easy as it sounds. While Bronya may have inherited much of her authority, she lacked any of the twisted love and hate that would make her a qualifier.
Yaskaya was born from the amalgamation of animals and their resentment against humans. But naturally conceived babies are born innocent without any grudges. So the next best thing to do was to raise Bronya in order to make her see things her way. “Humanity is something to be loved, but I will show you just how you should love them,” is what she said. This ended up having the opposite effect of what her mother intended, rather than loving or hating humans, she became fearful of them and what they might do to her. This was further exasperated when she learned that her mother was one of the Beasts who are enemies to humanity, so she assumed that by association they would also hate her for that reason.
She probably would have remained hidden all her life, if not for her father who imparted on her the idea that while the world might hate her for what she is, she must still at least give it a chance. That one day she will meet someone outside of Chaldea who accepts her for who she is. And that while her powers came from a place of malice and hate, this does not mean they can only be used for that purpose.
Right now, Bronya is content to just stay in Chaldea with her family and friends who already understand and accept her. But perhaps, one day, she might leave that place and see just what kind of world her father worked so hard to save.
Quotes:
“Don’t come near me, I might just bite you.”
“Do you think I could fly better if I lose some weight?”
“Some people say that the things I can do are so cool. Like being able to turn into a giant fox. I guess if they think that way it’s alright, at least it’s not running away in fear.”
Relationships:
Koyanskaya of Dark: “Most of the time when mom smiles at me, it’s because she sees that I learned a new trick that I got from her. And then she makes a frowny face when it becomes obvious I don’t like it. I wish she’d smile more when I’m doing things not related to her.”
Father: “I honestly don’t know what I’d do without my father. He has been a supportive pillar for me my entire life. I feel I’m my happiest when he’s around, because he accepts me for who I am and not where I came from. I wish mother would look at me the way he does.”
Finn: “Brother is so much like mother it unnerves me. But, he does show genuine kindness once in a while. I remember when he bought me that really expensive gaming rig, although he did admit that the cost was a drop in the bucket compared to what he makes in a week..”
Dawn: “Dawn is the second closest family member to me other than dad and grandma. She always plays with me whenever I have the time. Although I kinda wish we did other things together that she has in mind. Like that bicycle ride through the industrial park.”
Koyanskaya of Light: I sometimes feel like I’m talking to my mom’s evil twin. Which really isn’t saying much when you think about it. I can’t decide who I would rather deal with more.
As you might have heard chapter 236 of Jujutsu Kaisen ends with the death of Gojo Satoru. The fandom is making a pretty big deal about it. As someone who predicted from the beginning that Gojo was going to lose against Sukuna, the reaction is fascinating to me. This is perhaps the most controversial chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen I've ever seen. So I've decided to throw my hat into the ring.
The central theme of Jujutsu Kaisen is death, so the death of one of the main characters isn't too surprising, but what does Gojo's death mean for the story? What does it say about his character?
As I said above I am a little bit shocked by the extreme controversy over Gojo's death. Gojo was never going to win the fight in the first place, because Jujutsu Kaisen is a story and the story would be over if he defeated Sukuna. He'd easily be able to take care of Kenjaku afterwards and the main conflcit would be resolved. Would it really be an interesting story if Gojo one shotted the villains while the kids just wathced on Television?
The story is also not about Gojo, it's about the students. Gojo may think he's the protagonist of reality but he's not the protagonist of the story.
Once again, Jujutsu Kaisen is a story and stories have themes. We may grow personally attached to characters, but characters are just narrative tools to convey the themes of a story, no different from prose, dialogue, and art. Characters are a tool to be used well or used poorly, and sometimes yes that means killing them. Whether Gojo's death was naratively satisfying though isn't the purpose of this post though we're only asking what does it mean?
Finally, Jujutsu Kaisen is not only a fictional story, it's specifically a tragedy. Full disclosure, it's a manga about death.
The Protagonist of a Tragedy
So, number one shout out to me for making this post 4 months ago where I called the way Gojo would end the fight.
Excuse me while I fist pump for calling it!
The question on everyone's minds is why does one of the most powerful characters in the manga die offscreen in a pretty humiliating way, cut in half and helpless on the ground just like Kaneki. The reason Gojo didn't get a more heroic (or cooler) death is because we're not reading My Hero Academia, this is not a story about heroes or even a typical Shonen manga it is a tragedy.
In poetics Aristotle defines tragedy as:
"an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude; in language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions" (51).
To paraphrase a tragedy is about human action, actions characters make in a tragedy often have dire consequences. One of the most common consequences if the reversal of a hero's fortune, a hero of a tragedy usually starts out on top and ends up on the bottom because of the bad choices they make. If in normal shonen manga characters overcome their flaws through effort and persistence, in Jujutsu Kaisen we see characters more often than not lose to their flaws.
The reason I posted that Kaneki panel specifically is because it was a brilliant moment of narrative punishment for Kaneki's central character flaw. Kaneki the hero's main flaw is that he always fights alone, and he constantly makes that same choice over and over again to fight alone. One of the characters helpfully explains it as well.
Stories are primarily about change. If a character doesn't change they're not serving the plot, unless that specifically is the point. People have pointed out how abrupt it is for Gojo to get sealed in Shibuya, get let out, and then immediately die afterwards but that's kind of the point. Gojo made more or less the exact same choice (he asked for Utahime's help for a buff but otherwise fought the entire battle himself). The definition of insanity and what not, why would doing the same thing over and over again net him a different result?
Not only did Gojo choose to fight alone, but as I've been hammering on and on about in previous meta the entire fight Gojo cared more about fighting a strong opponent then he did saving Megumi, the child he was responsible for.
Jujutsu Kaisen is not a typical shonen manga where everything is resolved by beating a strong villain in a fight. That's specifically why I used the Tokyo Ghoul reference, because the reason Kaneki is defeated offscreen like that is because he thought the world worked like a shonen manga. He has a fantasy sequence where he's fighting Juzo in a shonen battle tournament like this is Yu Yu Hakusho right before it snaps back to reality and he's limbless on the ground.
Gojo is a major character in the manga Jujutsu Kaisen, literally "Sorcery Fight" and he is the best sorcerer in the whole world. His entire identity revolves around being a sorcerer. Since he is so good and beloved at what he does, he thinks that everything is resolved by exorcising a curse or defeating a strong opponent. He has basically no identity outside of that. Which is why when he's fighting the possessed body of his student, a person he's been mentoring since childhood his priority is not to save Megumi but to beat a strong opponent. Gojo is a sorcerer, before a human being. That's who he is, that's who he always has been since day one.
I think part of the negative fan reaction comes from fans being really attached to this scene in the manga and deciding Gojo's entire character revolves around being a good mentor figure to children.
Which is just incorrect, Gojo's entire character revolves around being the strongest. On top of that though, Gojo can care about children and also care about being the strongest he can care about multiple things at once and have those things contradict each other because humans are complicated. I'd point out even in this panel where he's stating motivation he's not trying to raise these kids up into being healthy adults, he wants them to be strong Jujutsu Sorcerers. Even when he's raising kids, his intention is to turn them into Jujutsu Sorcerers because everything in Gojo's mind revolves around Jujutsu Sorcery. Gojo does not exist outside of the world of sorcerers. Gojo may be the chosen one but he'd never be able to hold down a job at Mcdonalds.
I think in general readers put more investment in the things characters say out loud, rather than their actions. You can say one thing and do another. I can say "I should never eat sweets again I'm going to improve my diet", and then go and eat ice cream five hours later. Gojo can state out loud his intention to foster children and protect their youths, but then fail to properly do that in the story. Characters are not always what they say they are, that's why they're interesting to interpret. This isn't me calling the readers stupid, just pointing out that Gojo is made up of contradictions. He wants to get rid of the old guard and replace them with something new, but Gojo IS THE OLD GUARD.
If the culling games arc has shown us one thing, it's that ancient sorcerers brought to the modern age do not care that much about human life on an individual level, they are all of them egoists. There's a reason Gojo resembles someone like Sukuna more than he does any other character in the manga. I'm not saying Gojo is exactly like Sukuna, he's far more altruistic and uses his genuinely noble ideals but at the same time Sukuna is a shadow archetype to Gojo he represents Gojo's flaws. The flaws that Gojo succumbs to in tragic fashion.
Which if you believe that Gojo genuinely does love his students, and the ideal he's fighting for is to raise up a better generation and allow them to live out their youths, then Gojo throughout the entire Sukuna fight is acting against those ideals. He cares far more about fighting Sukuna then he does saving Megumi, it's shown over and over again in the battle, Megumi is an afterthought to him. If Gojo care moredefeating the big bad and saving the world is more important than helping a child that Gojo is responsible for then Gojo is acting against his stated principles. Why should Gojo win the fight when he's fighting for all the wrong reasons?
Tragedies are like visual novels, if you make the wrong choice the novel will give you a red flag. If you ignore the red flag then you get locked into the route with the bad ending. Gojo always fights alone. Gojo only ever fights for himself, even if he's using that selfishness in support of a more noble ideal like creating a better generation of sorcerers. If Gojo consecutively makes the same changes then in a tragedy he's not going to be rewarded for it.
Gojo wants the old generation out and the new generation in, but Gojo resembles the old generation too much. Old sorcerers like Hajime and Sukuna respect him, Hajime argues that Gojo being able to fight for his pride is far more important than him living to the end of the battle when Yuta wanted to interfere and help him.
Gojo's death isn't a surprise curve ball that Gege is throwing us for shock value, it's a result of his choices throughout the manga. A manga about change, and the change between generations is not going to punish a character for remaining roughly the same. Of course you might find it disappointing that Gege didn't give Gojo the chance to grow and change and experience a character arc like Megumi or Yuji, but Jujutsu Kaisen is a tragedy, and the way Gojo's arc ended is consistent with what Gege wrote.
Jujutsu Kaisen is not just a tragedy though, it's a manga about death. The manga begins with Yuji's grandfather warning him not to die alone the way that he did. His grandfather's dying words are what motivate Yuji throughout the beginning of the manga as he's searching for a "proper" death.
One of the major themes of Yuji's character is a contemplation of death. He accepts that death is inevitable, so he wants to save them from the gruesome deaths they'd experience if they became victims to curses and allow them to have a more satisfying death. Yuji's grandpa died an unsatisfying death because he died alone in a hospital room. Yuji even tries to make his own death a satisfying one because he believes by dying to seal away Sukuna he'll reduce the total number of casualties to curses.
Jujutsu Kaisen keeps investigating the theme of death and what exactly would make for a satisfying death. At one point it's all but stated that death is the mirror that makes humans analyze their lives.
When Yuji fails to save Junpei from the "unnatural death" it calls into question whether or not his goal of saving people from unsatisfying deaths and the gruesome deaths caused by curses is even feasible. Nanami even says that Yuji might not be able to accomplish his goal and warns him away from the path.
We see repeated unsatifying deaths in the manga, each time someone reflecting on their deaths that they weren't able to get what they wanted out of life. This list comes via @kaibutsushidousha by the way I'm quoting them.
Nanami's a character who chose to work as a sorcerer because he didn't want to evade the responsibility of doing all you can to help people, he wanted to believe he's somewhere where he's needed. He never runs away from responsibility like Mei Mei does so he quite literally works himself to death, living and dying as a sorcerer. Nanami or Gojo's dying hallucination of Nanami even says as much, his death is the result of him choosing to go south and returning to be a sorcerer.
Maki chose revenge against the Zen'in over her sister, and as a result Mai is dead. Maki has all the power in the world now, her revenge complete but she's left with a sense of "now what?" She's as strong as Toji now but she failed to protect her sister, and it's the result of the choices she made. Maki's reflection isn't triumph, it's "I should have chosen to die with her."
Even Yuji himself is robbed of his narrative purpose. The manga began with Yuji saying he wants to choose how he's going to die and he'll die taking out Sukuna with him so he can reduce the number of people killed by curses in the world. Both of those things are thrown in Sukuna's face. Number one the amount of people Yuji can save by permanently killing Sukuna is now a moot point because he let Sukuna rampage in Shibuya.
Number two, Sukuna isn't even in Yuji anymore. To build on what Comun said though, this repeated tragedy has a purpose to it and understanding requires understanding that Jujutsu Kaisen is an existentialist manga. Existentialism is basically a school of philosophy centered around the question of "Why do I exist?"
There's nothing about the invetability of death to make you question why you're alive in the first place. In the myth of Sispyhus, Albert Camus boils down all of philosophy to one question.
"There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy. "
All of philosophy is should I shoot myself in the head or should I keep living? Everything comes after that question, which is why in Jujutsu Kaisen a lot of the characters motivations revolve around them contemplating death. Sorcerers exist in a world where they can die any moment, and as Gojo says most of them die alone. It might be the nature of sorcery itself that causes so many people to die, not only are they dying because they are trapped in an uncaring system, but the characters themselves aren't really attempting to live outside of it. They live and die as sorcerers, replaceable cogs in the machine.
All of these unsatisfying deaths may just be the result of all these characters making one choice, to live as sorcerers rather than people. Because to exist means to live in the world.
Even in Mechamaru's case, his goal is deeply existentialist by what I defined, all he wants to do is live in the world with everyone else rather than be stuck in his hospital room but his actions contradict that goal. Instead of letting his friends come and visit he's obsessed with the idea of getting a normal body because he feels that's the only way he can exist with everyone else, he makes a deal with the devil, he lies and goes behind their backs. He wasn't living with everyone else in the world and he could have chosen to, he chose wrong and his death is the result of that choice.
Jujutsu Sorcerers aren't living in the world. They're living in a little snowglobe far removed from the world with its own rules, most of them regressive and disconnected from the rest of society. If you define existentialism as just "living in the world' then a lot of these characters aren't, because they only exist in the world of sorcery.
INVISIBLE BUFFY: What are you talking ab-
SPIKE: The only reason you're here, is that you're not here. (drinking) INVISIBLE BUFFY: Right. Of course, as usual there's something wrong with Buffy. She came back all wrong. (moving around on the bed) You know, I didn't ask for this to happen to me.
SPIKE: Not too put off by it though, are you? (drinking) INVISIBLE BUFFY: No! Maybe because for the first time since ... I'm free. She tosses the sheet aside. Spike looks around, trying to figure out where she's going.
INVISIBLE BUFFY: Free of rules and reports ... free of this life.
SPIKE: Free of life? Got another name for that. Dead.
Not living in the world with everyone else is the same as being dead.
A lot of these characters either make the choice to act alone, or be a jujutsu sorcerer rather than a person and because of that they die as sorcerers, b/c sorcerers die that's what they do. Mai didn't want to keep living as a hindrance to Maki so she kills herself. Maki didn't want to be anything other than a sorcerer, so her little sister dies and she's not a big sister anymore. Nanami chose to leave his job behind and become a sorcerer again, he dies as one.
Of course I don't think the manga is punishing characters for being too egotistical, but rather too unbalanced. If anything Mai is too selfless and that is why she died, she didn't want to live for herself and chooses self sacrifice for her sister. An unbalance between selfishness or selflessness results in an underdeveloped ego. Jujutsu Kaisen doesn't punish individualism per se, moreso if you're not a fully developed individual you won't last long. Because it's also a manga about growing up in the world, and a person who doesn't have a healthy, mature, well-balanced sense of self is not a grown up.
This twitter user det_critics points out that Gojo (and also Yuki + Yuji's) failures in the manga can be attributed to the fact they don't have real senses of self.
Gojo has an identity crisis as outlined by Geto, "are you Satoru Gojo because you're the strongest, or are you the strongest because you're Satoru Gojo?"
It's a challenge for him to find some reason to live outside of being the strongest, and in tragic fashion Gojo just doesn't find it in time. Gojo lived for fighting others, and proving to himself that he's the strongest, and that's how he dies.
There's something I like to say about narrative punishment in stories. There are two ways to punish a character, you either don't give them what they want, or you give them exactly what they want. This is the latter, Gojo wanted to find someone stronger than him because deep down he believed that nobody could understand him unless they were on his level. He wanted to be surpassed, and that's why he focused on creating stronger young sorcerers, but he never shook himself of the belief that only someone as strong or even stronger than he was could ever be emotionally attached to him so he made a deliberate choice to draw a line between himself and others.
Gojo's essentially gotten what he wanted from that choice in the worst way possible. The student he picked to succeed him Megumi, has his body stolen and kills him. Gojo is surpassed, but it's not by one of his own students it's by an enemy that's not only trying to kill Gojo but is going to massacre his students afterwards.
Gojo's spent his entire life believing that because he's more powerful that makes him inherently different and above others, and being lonely because he himself believed he couldn't relate to ordinary people and he dies like an ordinary person, an unsatisfying death where he wasn't able to bring out Sukuna's best, where he gets unceremoniously cut in half offscreen but yay he's no longer the strongest. He's gotten exactly what he wanted. Megumi is still not saved, Sukuna's probably going to kill more people because Gojo failed to stop him here, but hey at least he stopped to compliment Gojo.
It's empty, but it's empty because of the choices Gojo made in life to just not bother connecting to people or develop any kind of identity besides being a sorcerer. Gojo lives and dies as a sorcerer, and his dying dream is returning to a teenager being surrounded by everyone he was with during his school days, because that's the happiest time in his life. Ironically he was happier before he became the strongest, because that was the only time in his life that he allowed himself to connect to people.
However in the eyes of others, he is someone who has it all. That's why he is always alone. There was no one who could hold the same sentiments and mutually understand him. Geto was the only one who could understand what he was trying to say, and the only one who could communicate well with him.
It's no coincidence Gojo and Geto die exactly a year apart on the same day, if anything I'd say the reasons they die are similiar to at least thematically. They both die because they don't want to live in the world. Geto thinks the world is too corrupt and GOjo doesn't want to be anything other than a sorcerer, both of them fail to adapt.
「 'It's just. . .'
It's just that it was what Geto had to do.
[...] To someone like him, the reality that the world of sorcerers presented to him was just too cruel.
'. . .that in a world like this, I couldn't truly be happy from the bottom of my heart.'」
They can't be happy in a world like this from the bottom of their hearts, so narratively they both die. The things they chose to live for at the end of their life they fail to accomplish, Gojo is no longer the stronget, Geto fails to wipe out mankind or make major changes to the world and they die as normal people unsatisfied because they weren't trying to live in the world and make connections to others. They die almost karmically a year apart because their main connection for both of them, the thing which made them feel connected to the world and other people was each other.
Which is why this panel breaks my heart and is so narratively satisfying because of how unsatisfying it is...
"If you were among those patting my back... then I might've been satisfied."
Gojo reflects that he's not satisfied dying against Sukuna, not because he failed to give him a good enough challenge but because Geto wasn't there to pat him on the back. The one thing that would have satisfied him he couldn't have, because he didn't live to connect to people he lived to be the strongest and he died alone as the strongest. There's just something deeply upsetting about Gojo's dying dream fantasy just him being there talking with all of his dead friends who he never appreciated or connected to properly when he was alive. Knowing that if something had just gone a little differently, that even if he had to die no matter what he could have died happier if Geto was among the people saying goodbye to him because that connection with Geto is what gave his life meaning.

-Bungou Stray Dogs Beast
Anyways you ever think about how the girl from Britain you travelled with absolutely died in this castle of chalk never to be seen again, but her love for Guda was so strong that it rippled and echoed to every other Castoria in existence. I often say stuff like "lb6 starts off with me haunting Guda telling them we love Castoria" but in reality lb6 ends with our Castoria haunting Avatoria and the Castoria from Chaldea and all her other alternative selves hovering over their shoulders whispering hello. This is our friend. We have to take care of them, because they're terrible at it. This is our friend. Love them for me, okay? Honor that promise I can no longer uphold.
If this was any indication, this would’ve lead Jalter to be erased completely from history, because for when Jeanne d’arc had no desires, a possibility of an alter would not exist. Thus, Jalter would’ve disappeared eventually after getting defeated.
However, there was a twist. So how does Jalter continue to exist and join the throne of heroes?
Because the same one who defeated her, Ritsuka, is the same who saves her.
How? In Jeanne d’arc’s interlude, she starts to gain a desire, a wish led to corruption which grants Jalter the ability to exist.
And that wish, was for Jeanne d’arc to be saved. Because of this wish, as I said, allows for that little bit of corruption that allows Jalter to exist in this world. The path of an alter becomes a possibility.
In other words, if Ritsuka didn’t save her, Jalter wouldn’t exist.
Another way to look at it is in Jalter’s own interlude.
First thing to keep in mind, was what Jalter was created for. She was created for another mans revenge. Her whole goal was to destroy France.
However, since she was defeated, nothing held meaning anymore for her.
During her interlude, in France, Jalter says that there a bunch of spirits haunting and harming citizens in a mini singularity.
In short, Jalter says they are revenge ghosts that grew mad and don’t know who to hate anymore.
However it was singularity Jalter who did this not her
Which leads to the question: Why is she doing all of this? She has no reason to be atoning for the singularity Jalter’s sins
Questions are asked about her avenger class (we’ll talk about that later), wondering if she’s doing for herself
If so she is not fit as Ritsuka’s servant
And her answer, is that she is trying to find that out herself.
Remember what I stated before? When Jalter was defeated, she lost everything. Pride, her goals, her motivation. All of it was gone when she was defeated in France.
It came to a point where not even killing is fun.
However, even with her defeat, she still has one thing to keep her going.
It’s not fame or salvation or anything like that.
It is bring Ritsuka victory.
To her, that’s the one thing she can never forget. And it keeps her going. That is a pure declaration of pure faithfulness.
The mastermind behind it all was the old math professor and archenemy of Sherlock Holmes. As he continued to orchestrate his plan to destroy it.
However, that is not the only thing that has been roaming the streets.
Hessian Lobo. The wolf king joined by the headless horseman who hates humans for what they did to his mate and his Cubs.
An avenger nothing more than rage that, similar to the ghosts don’t know what to hate
And after several encounters, for what seems like the third time in a hunt, Hessian Lobo comes back after Ritsuka and Co. defeated Yan Qing, the doppelgänger assassin of shinjuku
And this time it is more powerful and out for blood. And it’s target becomes none other than Ritsuka
However, just before it can attack, Jalter distracts Lobo for time for them to escape.
However, in nearly death, Jalter thinks to herself that she’s a fake. She knew she was an avenger, that she would never help the world.
And yet, she did… she helped him. And desire more.
Later, we see what Jalter says about avengers. They don’t hate because of pure revenge or claiming back what was there’s.
They hate because it gets their heart going. Their blood pumping. However, even when it’s satisfied, they’ll always end up wanting more.
Jalter included.
So, she gives one final advice before the final battle with Lobo.
If an avenger were to ever be around, Ritsuka can’t simply defeat it. He has to kill it.
It is like putting out a dog who has rabies. That it would be a mercy to kill them.
Question is… why does she say this?
However, at the climax and the final battle with Moriatry, Jalter, alongside some of others like Edmond Dantes, come back to help Ritsuka out in facing him before the meteor comes crashing down
As Ritsuka wanted her to live, Jalter was able to find a sewer and escape Lobo barely
Finally, after all that happen, it remains with just Ritsuka and Jalter alone.
And thus, she gets her final wish. To dance with Ritsuka. Not to get back at Salter, but because she wanted to dance with him.
Even if it wasn’t a proper ballroom, she still wanted to dance with him.
And they dance their hearts content tonight. All up until Jalter is about to disappear.
However, even after dancing, there was one more thing that she promised to Ritsuka.
It was that they both practice again, so they may dance again. This wasn’t made to anyone else but him.
Fast forward to Summer 3, in Hawaii, when Ritsuka and Co. we’re supposed to take a vacation, Jalter starts a booth in the ServantFes.
She decides to go with doujin making, to rival Jeanne d’arc and drags Ritsuka to join in.
While at first, it wasn’t his idea, he stays with her
Before getting into the important stuff know that Ritsuka and Jalter spend A LOT of time together even when they make doujins
Whether it would be eating together, walking on the beach, all of that
It comes to a point where she says Ritsuka is hers, and wouldn’t trade him at all
However, even through countless time loops, Jalter begins to become even more passionate about her doujins. She no longer wants it half baked
And even then, she feels guilty for dragging Ritsuka along even when he had a vacation.
But Ritsuka still stayed by her side all the way
And after all the hard work, Jalter later comes close to finishing her final doujin. However, something was still missing. A satisfying ending.
Who does she turn to? Not Jeanne d’arc. Not Robin. No, she turns to Ritsuka.
And when she does, they find an ending they can relate to
Now, I realize that I’m just giving all evidence, no explanation, so what does this all mean?
In my heart and in my eyes, this ship is not simply a good guy x tsundere.
No. Ritsuka didn’t just have her open up. He saved her. He saved her to a life of hate, and helped her dream.
People seem to underestimate this as a simple “uwu” tsundere ship, but we forget that Jalter had it ROUGH.
Imagine having to live that life of hate and anger all to know that you’re just a fake. What would the world mean to you?
And to Jalter, Ritsuka was her world.
People can also pass off Ritsuka as simply a self insert too, but I don’t believe that’s true either.
Who Ritsuka is, is a kind soul who is accepts everybody good or evil. He believes that he can love the good and even in evil there’s something to respect.
Perfect for Jalter.
Ritsuka has constantly been there for Jalter, both directly and indirectly. And Jalter’s life was saved.
She found something to compensate for her hatred. She found something to believe in. She found someone who can accept her.
To Jalter,… Ritsuka is her hero.
And that’s, I FIRMLY BELIEVE, that Ritsuka x Jalter is the best ship ever.
A ship of pure faithfulness. A heroic tale. A fiery couple. Ritsuka and Jalter deserve eternal happiness.
Even if the world is against me, I will support it to the end.
Thank you all for reading.
leave it to nasu to make an event where the character whose very existence is based on a running joke has a tragic existential story and involves waxing poetic on the philosophical nature of being santa claus
even better is that like. it works. it’s so silly but it WORKS and it’s genuinely heartrending to read jalter lily’s pov and thoughts in her monologue and i really do love her now. she’s good and cute.
- As sappy as this sounds, I feel like they genuine enjoy cuddling quite a bit. Velvet most likely misses the intimacy of being a big sister quite a bit, so when she gets to sleep close to someone, having her arms wrapped around them, that reminds her of those simpler times. As for Magilou, she never got to experience that sort of intimacy in the first place, as she was denied the love of parents through out her life, so she’s more likely even more ‘into it’ than Velvet. Being held like that helps her feel secure and safe, which is a feeling she was long denied, so it’s a win win for both of them basically.
6. What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?
- Velvet loves the fact that Magilou has the natural talent of making people laugh, even herself. For so many years Velvet most likely forgot such emotions, but Magilou’s funny antics and clever and witty dialogue does make even her lips up curl into a smirk at least. Whenever she’s reminded that she’s a human despite the title that she’s known for, she’s happy. As for Magilou, she’s mesmerized by the fact that despite everything that Velvet has been through, she’s able to stand on her own too feet. Magilou feels like she’s broken beyond repair, that no one would care if she simply ceased to exist one day, and she thought that there wasn’t possibly hope for her or people like her. Enter Velvet, who despite having been through something that’d break a person, still ended up standing strong when it was all said and done. To Magilou, Velvet is an inspiration, someone who she looks up to. She has been through hell, just like she has, but she’s still standing strong, so perhaps she too has a reason to keep fighting?7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?
- I think that in both of their cases, their witty back and forth bantering changes from the mean spirited and snarky one into that of more flirtatious tone. Of course they aren’t obvious to it, but the rest of the crew totally notices it. I can imagine Rokurou in particular being an ass about it, and both Velvet and Magilou are like ‘as if’. But of course it’s hard to keep your feelings of someone a secret for very long, so soon enough the reason for their bantering becomes obvious even to them.17. Who says I love you first?
- This is a hard one, as I can’t help but to imagine them almost saying it at the same time. Which one of them is the one to say it first, it can easily go either way. Both of them are very similar in the sense that they try to deny their true feelings for as long as possible, so naturally something like that is something they try to bottle up and keep to themselves as long as possible.
25. Who needs more assurance?
- I think this one has to go to the self proclaimed witch. Velvet has at least had a family that supported her through out the years, but Magilou never got to experience that luxury. Being cast aside by her parents, having her adoptive father figure see her more as a tool than a person were all things that shaped her and gave Magilou the rather negative and downright grim view of the world. Quite often she probably needs reassurance, that she’s in fact worth love and affection, that she’s loved even with her flaws. Being raised to believe the opposite means Velvet has a lot of work ahead of her, but I’m sure that she’ll manage. Not like anything with Magilou is easy, right?

Any EiRoku or MagiVel headcanons? Love your art btw ;)
Thank you for liking my art! QwQ It means a lot to me to read that!
Hmm headcanons? I don’t know if these count but…
Eiroku:I think Eizen would like to comb Rokurou’s hair because he knows Rokurou won’t comb it himself very often. He also likes when Rokurou wears his hair out.Rokurou would also like to compare his hands to Eizen’s a lot because his hands are bigger than Eizen’s but Eizen has longer fingers. Eizen has the bigger softer chest because his is less muscle and more fat. So Rokurou likes to rest his head on them. On a similar note they like to work out together with Eizen telling Rokurou to do more squats because his butt is too flat and doesn’t have shape. Rokurou also can’t touch his toes but Eizen can. Eizen thinks Rokurou is cute when he’s drunk because he just babbles on and on. Rokurou wishes he could see Eizen drunk more often but Eizen has more self control. Rokurou secretly wants to wear Eizen’s coat. Eizen likes to move Rokurou’s hair out of his face because even though he may be a daemon the markings on his face aren’t ugly to him. And he secretly wants to keep an eye on it to see if it will spread.
Magivel:Magilou hates combing Velvet’s hair because it’s too full and she loses the comb in her hair a lot. But she likes to run her fingers through it. Velvet likes to style Magilou’s hair. Magilou also wants to paint Velvet’s nails but she always says no because they’ll just get messed up in battle anyways. Secretly she appreciates that Magilou always asks because it makes her feel a little like a normal girl again.Velvet has boney hips and constantly likes to bump into Magilou knowing it will hurt her. Magilou is afraid one day Velvet will seriously puncture something. Velvet also likes to grab and feel Magilou’s ears because they’re shaped differently. Magilou can’t help but giggle because it tickles. Magilou thinks Velvet has a cute nose and always wants to smooch it. Magilou likes to take Velvet’s cape and pretend she’s the Lord of Calamity. She also would like to try Velvet’s top but knows there’s no way it will fit her if it’s already big on Velvet. In the quiet times Velvet is the one talks to Magilou the most. And invite her to bath a lot and talks to her while she washes her hair. Magilou has learned to see past her harsh words and knows that a lot of it is encouragement. Magilou loves to run up and give Velvet Butterfly kisses(It’s when you kiss someone, usually their cheek, and blink rapidly so your eyelashes caress their skin). Velvet hates it. But doesn’t push her away. She simply puts her hand over Magilou’s eyes. Velvet likes to slap Magilou with her hair when she feels like she’s talking to much nonsense.
This is all I have for now! I never really thought about headcanons. Now I’ll think of more! I hope you like these though!
