Troy, New York. Early Winter — 1995.

I had been looking for a drummer for my slash-and-burn noise band, Seer (1993-1998). A friend said, “Hey, I know a guy named Mike in Troy. He was a drummer in a hardcore band.” So we drove to Troy and I met Mike. This photo caught my reaction after Mike told me he had been planning on “selling his drum kit.” Yeah. Hmph. Anyways, I think I gave him a demo tape. We did end up jamming with him at an impromptu house show at his place once. Never saw him again.

Black kids from the ghetto weren’t fronting AND playing fuzzed-out noise guitar in alternative rock bands in the ’90s. I knew what I was doing was different. I’ve never really told my story, just put it away as times moved on.

Seer was a dream that I began in the fall of 1993. I was 18. My friend Jeremiah Stelline, this troublemaking teen from Boston, joined on bass. It was ’93— so you know the music world was wild, and we were in New York, so we were absorbing everything, going to every kind of show: hip-hop, alternative, techno, hardcore, all of that. I led the band, wrote all the music, sang/screamed, and played electric guitar. We kicked around Schenectady, New York, about five years. Tragically, I was never able to get the idea of this band off the ground beyond a handful of jam-session-type shows where we played as friends sat around our rehearsal space drinking beers and smoking pot. Years of practice, rehearsals, and constant jamming while searching for, and never finding, a solid drummer to join the band - dozens of cassette tapes and demos, jam sessions, boombox recordings,some photos and fragments from those days still survive today — plus the many stories from my experience as a young , Black teenager in punk/alt/rock spaces in upstate New York during the nineties.
