You’d be forced to deny who you are, to hide your roots, excluded from civil life, and condemned to live in poverty. ‘Down to the Root’ is the story of three Dominican women: black, poor, and struggling to get back their stripped nationality. While doing so they proudly embrace their Haitian heritage and confront, with nonviolent methods, powerful people and institutions who’ve built an ideology to stigmatize them. A Q&A with Dominican activist Ana Belique of reconoci.do will follow the screening. Ana will also be in conversation with Astou, a Bronx based educator of Senegalese descent who is also a DACA recipient to explore the intersection of race, immigration, and structural anti-blackness in a global context.
