Any of Jane McMorland Hunter’s poetry anthologies from Batsford Books. I’ve gone through 5-6 different ones so far. Bought 365 Poems for Life and think I'll get the Poem-a-Day one too since I posted a few excerpts from their series back when I was posting from lit journals and daily poetry sites. My library has ebooks of two of Jane McMorland Hunter's anthologies so will look into them.

Do you know of any dramas that focus on Shoukang Palace and an emperor’s past imperial concubines? Thanks! Your Tumblr is excellent.

We are not aware of any dramas like this, unless you want to go into dramas about Dowager Empress Ci Xi which might then focus on her relationship with Ci An. But even then that would usually only be a minor point compared to the rest of Ci Xi’s life. 

Chinese dramas still tend to be rooted in historical events and by the time the emperor dies, not much else would be recorded about his concubines unless they had a significant role in politics.

Yeah. I’m all for a tragic romance which comments on crushing social oppressions and divisions. It’s not my favorite thing, but when it’s done well I can really appreciate and respect it. It was just--apart from the performances, which are gorgeous and worth it--heavy-handed and OTT about how it’s done.

“Solomon and Gaenor” is an outrageously depressing...

I saw it in the theater when it first came out and left it just so sad. Almost zero hope left in that ending.

Yeah. The acting was beautiful, and the central concept was strong, but I felt like the script... well, oftentimes the tragedy felt forced? Their situation was inherently tragic but then it just piled on and on (and on). Solomon’s death just felt OTT and awful. I’m not against tragedy, but I wish it had been dolled out differently.

Pretty much. Yes, they’re including things from a kind of mythic/emotional storytelling that isn’t usually so centered in Trek. But it’s intentional and cool, not, like, a mistake?

Even only basically competent writers would not do something so well connected like this by accident. The way that the journey outward, to explore the universe/its wonders and mysteries, is also a journey into your own family and heart?

NOT ACCIDENTAL. Pretty cool, actually. Though not to everyone’s taste ofc. But even if someone isn’t into it, it would be nice if they could admit that it’s being done intentionally, instead of acting like DSC has put a hair in their soup.
