Listen to AFTER THERAPY (feat. Hot Mulligan) by NOAHFINNCE on Apple Music. 2022. Duration: 2:21
Lately I’ve been learning the difference between response and reaction. So many times we automatically react when we believe someone is attacking us. Sometimes our reactions it’s warranted and sometimes it not. (Think cause and affect) Sometimes it’s difficult to tell what is what and I know because this has been an issue in my living life during ever conflict I’ve ever come across.
The conflict could be good or bad didn’t matter if I felt like you came at me sideways I would react. Emotional Reaction could range from moods like sadness, anger, anxiety, or a combo of all 3. For physical reactions it could range from disassociating, blowing up, shutting down, pacing, passive aggressiveness, crying, negative self talk and thoughts. All in which are no ways to deal with conflict in the slightest. It’s even worse when you have a partner that can have the same issues with reaction vs. response. It’s never usually pretty.
After some soul searching, therapy, connecting with others and one bad reaction to a conflict too many, it became apparent that how I was going about and accepting things was not working out in my favor mentally, emotionally and physically. I decided to make a change in how to deal with conflict by taking the time to listen and respond directly instead of reacting (and wasting unnecessary energy getting worked up)
Sad truth in all this is, I’ve never learned how to respond to conflict. Conflict was something to be avoided growing up. Conflict = Pain = Hurt. Nothing was ever resolved because the conflict was met with reaction and result ended in reaction. If that makes sense lol.. Reactions could be so intense I would completely forget stand my ground if the conflict was towards me and just take whatever verbal/emotional abuse that was dished out at me and internalize it. Some how I believe every time something went wrong it was my fault or I was to blame.
I learned that other peoples reactions and feelings have nothing to do with you. You can’t control how another person feels and how they react to you whether you did something or not. Emotions should be allowed to flow, emotions should be felt, experienced and released. While that is true, that doesn’t mean it’s okay for someone to take out their frustration on you in anyway without you speaking up. It also doesn’t mean that you should dismiss the other’s emotions by shutting them out with physical reactions (even if you aren’t aware). It goes hand in hand. You can only do your part in the conflict by choosing to respond and try to nudge the conflict into a healthy conversation that can be had rather than two or more people reacting to each other and go from there.
Later when I have a moment (by later or tomorrow) I will release a few steps on how to respond instead of react, just so this doesn't run on forever because the universe knows I can go on and on and on especially without any structure.
With that being sad, goodnight guys and keep an eye out for my next post
