There is nothing more grounding than losing hour upon hour at the bake house. When I did the long thinking about what skills I had up for grabs I was shocked to find I was one of only a handful of men who knew how to make bread. Bread is a backbone for a humble diet. As a boy I normally ate a whole loaf of bread between all three of my meals. It was a filler, and, it stuck with me years later.
Getting the last of the loves into the oven I seal it up and check a near by time piece. Just because a round of bread was in the oven, it doesn’t mean I get to slack off. We have to start up the loves for dinner while the lunch bread is baking. It’s a constant process, but it’s utterly rewarding when I see the men get in line for food and they have something warm and comforting.
Going over to a mixing bowl I start getting the mix together. Only out of the corner of my eye I see something that is a minor Light send. Boar. Four large boars are being carried in. They’re all going to the butcher, they’ll be cut up and I can almost taste the pork fat in whatever dishes we come up with next.
Robar was leading the group until he saw me. The man looked to be getting a bit of color to his face, all of us are starting to get color to our faces. Even me. His steps were unyielding as he made his way to the back house. The other workers knew not to bother him too much, and he knew well to not get close so the area can stay sanitized.
“I just finished seeing Valentine.” He nodded to the boars but he didn’t look happy.
Val is a hard person to figure out. I know I fucked her life over. I did. I own that. I am doing what I can to save her now. This means sending Ro to try to offer her direction in her powers. She told me she was walking away, that she wanted to be normal. If she wants that I can make it happen.
“How’s she doing?” I asked measuring out some flour and adding it to a sifter, I put in some salt as well and start to tap it into the larger bowl that had water, sugar, and yeast. Okay sure, I am worried about her. It’s all those instincts I have to keep smaller people safe. Even her, even if I know she could easily become a monster.
Robar let out one of those breaths that just screams ‘shit’s not good’. His dark eyes moved from my hands to my eyes. “She’s being plagued by the entity. it’s getting to her in her dreams I think... She kept touching her neck.”
And just like that I’m reminded that things like this done just end... When it comes to gods you can’t just be rid of them. Zirnos, or whatever the fuck his name is, It’s name is, it’s not going to rest. Val is along and she doesn’t have the backup to fight against it.
“I’m going to go see her.” But I don’t stop from my task. “Tomorrow... It’s a hell of a day and I’ll get someone to replace me here. If you’re right, we... we need to help her.”
“She threatened to kill me.” Robar said in his normal blatant tone. “She hates us still, she...” He was recoiling as if something up setted him. “She thinks she’s in love with you.”
I know. I know how Val feels. It’s been the only card I had to guide her into a better life. She knows I don’t love her. It’s my partial saving grace. Still I know it’s her main motivation to be here with us.
Starting to mix the dough in the bowl I turn it out to the counter and start to knead it. “I know mate. It’s going to take time, maybe years, but I’m fucking giving her the time... You did make sure to pay her.”
Ro blanched and reached into his robe and pulled out the small bag of Alliance gold. “I was lost in conversation with her.”
“Fucking hell mate.” I shook my head and then gestured to where my jacket was. “I’ll give it to her tomorrow. She’s, strong but needs a softer hand.”
“I was trying to assist. I mentioned I had seen her ‘god’ and she needed to know she could conquer it.” Robar said his voice in a defending tone. “She is still not seeing the horrors Colton tried to do. She sees him in a good light.”
Letting out a breath I nodded. “I’ll talk to her tomorrow. She’s not going to hurt me...”
The dough was almost to the right consistancy for it’s first rising, but I was becoming lost in the repetition of the movement. Baking was one of those sacred places for me as a kid. It’s a skill that has now paid off. I just need to hope my time and ditication with Valentine will end up the same way. She could end up being a fabulous void user. Doing something more than be in a cult leader’s shadow.
I’m a man who lost to hope. I need to hope or I fall into a dark place. Valentine is one of the people I hope for. Her life has been horrible, and it’s all I want for her to have somewhere safe so she can heal. First we will have to deal with the entity tormenting her. None of my people deserve to lose sleep to a whisper in the night.
