FOR A BLISSFUL FEW DAYS I got to play Guild Wars with Belle and Bolthound. There’s a lot going on in these doodles but they’re not really easy to read so just make what you want of the captions I added.

There’s a few faces here, Itzal (Serpentwined), Bolty (Bolthound), Gunnar the Grey (of the same GW name) and Aftertouchs’ Sylvari.

Charr/Sylvari belong to Anet, Jacky belongs to me.

Maybe he heard the voices? My hc being that most of that crucible nonsense was in Shep’s brain like in the Geth Consensus and the talk with Leviathan, not her body. The Catalyst’s voice has MShep and FShep’s voices layered over it... it’s possible a lot of the speaking got mumbled out by Shep while the Catalyst was hosting her mind?

Garrus getting increasingly freaked out by the things he’s hearing Shepard say. Trying to tell her via omnitool not to give in to Control, remember TIM? Remember Saren? Not to give in to Synthesis, remember what Legion said? Evolution at their choice, not in the control of the Reapers. Shep doesn’t hear him- exactly- but those ideas do float through her mind because of it.

Oh, god. EDI and Joker hearing it too. Sharing what they think is a last goodbye. EDI insisting that it’s fine, frightened, needing to be strong. They’ll find a way to fix her, she knows it. Tali frantically contacting the Floatilla, warning them that the Geth programs might suddenly go offline. Already desperately thinking about how she might be able to salvage their code.

Here's some little plot bunnies for you if you're interested. Garrus secretly hacking into Shepard's omnitool before the run to the beam so even if he can't be there in person, he can at least try to be a voice on Shepard's shoulder. Garrus finding Shepard after the big Crucible shebang. And Garrus helping Shep with physical therapy as she gets used to her new legs and recovers!

Consider: Hacking her omnitool isn’t even really a secret. I mean, in the quiet party Garrus is cooking up lots of ways to booby trap Shep’s apartment to keep her safe, right? And when he’s caught, he goes sweetie, honey, love of my life, please, I just want to know you’re safe. And she gives in sometimes! So. Consider that he pulled this act re: the omnitool way before even the last mission.

Sweetheart, darling, love of my life, please, I just want to know that I can find you if we’re ever separated on a mission. And Shep does her ‘okay honey, if it’ll make you feel better’ routine but she wants the same kind of reassurance, you know? This concession is what ultimately saves her life after the whole beam run-in, because bullshit the Normandy left Sol completely, bullshit. They went back down to Earth and Garrus immediately pinged her omnitool.

Garrus also helping her deal with her new scars, probably. Telling her how amazing she looks. Who’d have thought he had a weakness for women with scars? They’re two of a kind. No, seriously, Shepard! -And maybe she doesn’t believe him and maybe she feels superficial and shallow for worrying about them, but it does make her feel better.

I’m willing to accept that everything from the beam on is in Shep’s head re: indoctrination theory, but not exactly like it? This isn’t the first time Shep has been somewhere her body isn’t, after all. The Geth Consensus when she was ‘shooting’ code and ‘walking’ on platforms, for one, and the encounter with Leviathan where L spoke through familiar faces on some kinda flat scene, for another. Both times she was presented with imagery that was patently untrue/flat out told is not real, but existed so she could make sense of it. 

For what purpose I don’t have any kind of clue, but between how surreal everything in the Citadel was, Anderson’s inexplicable appearance, and how flat out WEIRD Illusive Dude looked and acted, it straight up doesn’t fit that it was reality

Maybe everything I experienced directly as Shepard was in her head, while all the things not Shep probably happened? Even Hackett’s comment that she made it, one person made it, would jive if Shepard’s consciousness was.... uploaded, I guess, to the Catalyst, and given Anderson and Dude as right and left shoulder angels. And Dude does talk an awful lot about controlling Shep. And for some reason her cybernetics were brought up? maybe that and the general interest Reapers had in her caused/facilitated the AI to upload her.

I’m still processing it all though. What was your take on it?

Welcome to the Saren survival rabbit hole! I do love a good redemption arc but that whole premise is just juicy with pathos.

Bury me in redemption arcs, failed or successful. I love that kinda thing, there’s nothing better for a good emotional storyline!

Even if having Saren around is a repeat of Loghain and all he does is snark at you and comment about how hopeless everything is, I think it’d make a good story!

One thing I always love to ideate is how the trilogy would have played out had Saren survived his suicide. Would he have turned to the good guys? Would he have been the ticking grenade that undid all of Shepard's work? *Would he have been a party member or god forbid a love interest???*

My god.

Definitely a love interest because I am terrible and want to kiss all Turians, but consider: Saren does turn to the good guys, but he’s still made up of a great deal of technology. Towards the end of his run as a character, after you’ve locked in a romance with him if you take that route, there’s a climactic scene where he STILL shoots himself. Sovereign might be dead, but other Reapers can hijack the mods he made just as well, and try to take control and force him to betray you. 

Saren STILL sacrifices himself to give organics a shot at surviving the war. He refuses to become a sleeper agent for the Reapers. His death was emotional and tragic in ME1- this time it includes a parting admonition for Shep to follow through on their hopeful promises, and maybe even a last (or first?? sad mysteries) ‘I love you.’ And if he wasn’t romanced, he calls you his friend.
