Record Collector: Talking records with Factory Girls’ Katie Rex
DJ Katie Rex knows the power in community. The former femme nightlife collective Factory Girls that she founded in 2011 in Philadelphia helped establish a safe space for female and female-identifying performers and music lovers, while her own mentors helped her get her career off the ground.
“You are only as successful as your network,” she says. “So for creatives, it's especially vital to encourage and support each other to recognize that your friends’ success is also your success and vice versa.”
While Factory Girls is no more, Katie still brings her techno talents to the nightlife scene in her new home of Brooklyn. She’s signed to Afterwave Records, a Brooklyn-based techno label — who just released their first compilation (to which Katie contributed the bouncy and beat-heavy “He’s A Cancer”) — and working on her debut EP.
Despite her dance music career, Katie’s record collection features classic rock greats like Lou Reed and David Bowie (and some disco courtesy of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). We went digging into her collection and talked about her career progression and the bit of advice she’d give to young DJs.
