The week after Gryffindor's rematch with Hufflepuff was a gloomy Sunday, both literally and metaphorically.

It was also the day Harry spotted a strange person walking down the halls on his way to the Great Hall for lunch.

"Harry," Hermione hissed, pulling on his arm before he could wander off.

"Hermione—"

Ron realized they'd stopped walking and turned around. "What is it? What's going on?"

"There's someone—"

"Nothing, Ronald, Harry's trying to go and play hero again—"

"—someone weird in the castle! What do you mean playing hero? I don't play hero."

"Basilisk? Sorcerer's Stone?"

"I have a fatal sense of curiosity," Harry defended himself.

"Stay put, Mister Potter," his rescuer said. It was muffled, but Harry recognized the voice. It didn't bring much reassurance.

At least until he craned his head around and saw why he was being told to stay put.

The dementors were crowded around them, trying to come closer but being kept at bay by that same inky-black smoke. The rain had no effect on either— dementors did not get wet, the water simply rolled off of their robe-like skins, and the smoke... it didn't dissipate like smoke normally did in the rain. In fact, the rain didn't even seem to touch it, simply passing through as though it weren't really there.

"I apologize for the noise," Campbell said, cool and smooth and far too void. "It's quite unavoidable with this spell."

Harry didn't now what he meant.

Then he said, "Tuono," and Harry shielded his eyes and ears from the crack of lightning that descended on them.

...cross actually has someone he can open up to that isn't neah (who he doesn't actually open up to he just. leaks to. neah pokes holes in him and feelings leak out.)

anyway i’ve been yelling about my nanolanglocked progress on twitter and i feel like tumblr is woefully deprived of that content (As It Should Be) so here’s some status updates!!!

across 12 different scenes and spanning 4 installments in the afwf verse

flagrante (langlocked prequel), langlocked proper, periculum (book 5), Bad End Alma Arc

nothing huge has happened in Bad End Alma Arc scenes yet kanda’s just comatose but neah’s definitely [redacted]

completely destroying hp canon regarding obliviate charms

Mother is now head of the orphanage cross was at as a kid because the order works differently in langlocked and this is one of the more reasonable parallels for being cross’ ‘patron’ in canon

i needed the cross-takes-allen-to-Mother-to-weather-out-the-trauma-storm scene

i’m writing the scene.

it’s not very happy and cross does not want to be a dad.

allen not being host to the 14th noah is really throwing wrinkles in a lot of stuff!!

“No Host means cross can skip the whole 'who cares about the host! i sure don't! wake the fuck up, neah!' and go straight into 'dad now' mode”

“correction he goes from 'wait neah you can't just leave i don't know how to be a dad (neah: you did this to yourself)' to 'i REALLY don't want to be a dad' and then finally 'i'm not signing your permission slip. you're not allowed to have fun.'”

they’re like. in their 40s at this point. they’ve always been like this. (they haven’t.)

i know i make it sound like langlocked is just all abut cross and neah being gay married and dealing with the world out for their son’s allen’s head but it... well it kind of is i can’t apologize for that.

also because i feel like if i talk about the actual plot it’ll just devolve into spoilers Really Fast

anyways leverrier shows up in chapter 10 i hope you’re all ready for him to get eat shit (he doesn’t. sorry.)

Neah made deliberate eye-contact with Rita Skeeter.

"I hate him so much," he told her in a confiding hush. "Please have that written down, I want it on record. I despise Cross Marian."

Then he sat back in the chair again, Cross's arm still around his shoulders, never looking away. To her credit, Skeeter didn't squirm under his scrutiny or Cross's.

"I.. I see the two of you are very close to each other," she commented with the ease of one who dealt with squabbling couples regularly. "I don't think I've _ever__ seen such a candid exchange before."

"I'm not joking, I do hate him."

"Ouch," Cross muttered. Neah leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek, which he accepted with a grumble.

flagrante fumos snippets unedited bc i’m living my best nanowrimo life. just 2 snippets. i just started i have nothing left to give.

"Every time I almost kill someone, Marian?" Neah sat back again, and Cross almost reached out to keep him close. "Almost sounds like you're enabling my murderous rampage."

"Is that what that was?" He wasn't sure what to make of this topic. It was hard to tell sometimes what Neah did or didn't want to talk about. "I might be. Kinda hot when you kill people."

"Liar," Neah laughed. He took Cross's hand in his and laced their fingers together, then inspected the combination like he was admiring some kind of accessory. "You hate when I get into fights."

"I never said that." Cross brought their hands up and pressed a kiss to his knuckles.

"I had Mana," Neah said, quiet. "And Mana had..."

Cross wrapped his fingers nimbly around Neah's wrist. It wasn't thin, not anymore. Life on the lam wasn't exactly fulfilling, but there was no one to monitor their every action anymore.

It wasn't thin, but he couldn't really call it healthy, either. Either of them.

"You have me," he said, tugging. Gentle and coaxing.

"What did my uncle want?" he asked as soon as the door was open.

"He didn't," Glenmoor said smoothly, practically barging into the room. Allen swerved aside. "I lied."

"You wouldn't have let us in otherwise, would you?" Malinda smiled apologetically.

"I would have!" Allen complained, though he didn't make any attempts to look affronted at all. "Probably. Maybe!"

"Very reassuring, Allen."

"I try to be."
