I like this saree a lot for the following reasons: - Tussar is one of my most favourite materials - I love the thread work motifs on the saree and particularly the pink and mauve as I have been described must look stunning against the black - I love how easy she is to drape, it makes my life ten times easier! - Last but not the least it's very versatile which means I can team it with many different blouses which is certainly a big plus. I AM NOT INSECURE I know I am not perfect, I don’t intend to be either. To be honest in some ways being blind makes me less vain. Many a times I get criticised for the way I look or dress, but that has never bothered me. I lost my vision when I was 26 and have found it extremely difficult to find a away to move ahead with time as I have been unable to see how I have changed in the last 34 years. I feel there is a magic in being imperfect, I love my grey hair, I like my wrinkles, I am proud of my crooked teeth and I am not ashamed of being blind. Things that used to bother me don’t anymore. I dress in a way that makes me feel confident and comfortable. I don’t fret over things, for instance if my hair is out of place or if my pallu is not perfect or if my lipstick is out of sync. Most of the times I am unaware of such things since I am blind, which can be a blessing in disguise. MY MUM : DON’T JUDGE HER I am old, bold and beautiful! I find it very amusing when people try their level best to hide their actual age. This picture you see here is of my mother, she is 59 years old . Like good old wine we all get better with age. Each wrinkle that appears on our face, or the strand of hair that goes grey or the slight downward pull of gravity in our features all these things highlight the beautiful life we have had. By trying to hide how old we are we almost disregard all those beautiful years that have gone by, it's like forgetting or not acknowledging those lovely memories. For some reason the perception of beauty with age has been given a different formula. The beauty quotient and variables to define beauty seem to have age at a minimum value, I wonder why? I am 35 years old and this year I have noticed a few grey hairs which I proudly flaunt, I also have seen a wrinkle under my eye which I love, it makes me look wiser and I now need to wear glasses to read which is brilliant as people take me more seriously! The point I am trying to make is no matter what age we are , we are beautiful. Our life , our experiences , our acquaintances and our souls make us beautiful and these variables are not directly co-related with age. When I look at my Mum I can see a gorgeous woman, who is beautiful and happy. I see someone with a unique sense of style, who has had a wonderful life and is brimming with happiness. COURAGE AND BEAUTY Lately, I have been thinking quite a lot about beauty and age. Many a times I have had to defend my mother's style of dressing as the society we live in expects my mother to dress in plain , modest non coloured clothing as she is a 59 year old widow. People strongly believe that because she is of a certain age and the fact that she is a widow she has to stick to their so called image of how an older woman should dress. I have always felt change begins at home and one should lead by example, so for me to encourage any other woman to feel comfortable in their own skin I needed to make sure the women in my life reflected self-belief, beauty , confidence and determination. There is not a better example than my mother! She is 59, blind and a widow. She and my sister live alone in a country like India where it is considered unsafe to be without a male figure and more so if you are disabled. However, the unfortunate circumstances in my mother's life has never stopped her from being happy or living her life to the fullest. Her style statement defines who she is and I am very proud of her for not changing her core just to confirm to this so called society's norm! I wanted to use my mother as an example, hence when she agreed to do the shoot for me I was overwhelmed. Age is timeless and no one should be made to feel they can't dress the way they feel they are comfortable in just because they are of a certain age!
