"She's a billionaire... of course she wants to take over the world!" Spider-Woman #7 (2016)
interspacing
why do i have imperial baby feels to this song???
Holomessages between Lana (Agent Seventy- Seven is interspacing's baby!) and Obisen
The holo blinked on to show Seventy-seven leaning too close to the capture lens, apparently adjusting something on the machine in front of her. She smiled directly at the camera, settling back and folding her hands in her lap and crossing her ankles.
"Obisen! I hope that this message finds you happy, wherever you are. It's been difficult to keep up with you sometimes, but I promise I will never lose track of you - after all, I couldn't let anything bad happen to you. The work you're doing, it's important, even if it's not Intelligence. I miss you, and I want you to be safe."
"I got a reassignment myself recently," she said, her pleasant tone settling on a cool neutrality. "I was not aware that it had even happened until I received my formal requisition notice from Intelligence. I am still not sure what to make of it. It is the reason I'm sending this to you all the way from the Arkanis Sector - not very often that someone should find themselves out here. It is," she shifted, looking aside, "It is quiet out here. I will be happy to return to Imperial space."
She chewed her lip, distracted. After a moment of silence she perked up, as though just remembering that there's a recording. "I have been keeping up with our shows when I am able," her tone was brighter, now. "I record them and watch them when there's time. I got to the arc where Olar revealed to Brayla that he is actually a spy from that Alderaanian noble house, and she has to decide if she was going to turn him over to the authorities or keep him hidden in her vacation home."
"Or course she ultimately made the right decision, but I thought - I thought that she caused herself so much pain by even considering hiding him. By allowing herself to struggle, allowing herself to be torn between someone she loves and the Empire. If she had just given him over, straight away, there wouldn't have been any reason to fret. She would've spared herself the agony."
She shook her head. "Maybe this is why I am a terrible writer. The show would not be entertainment without the conflict. And, I - ah. Nevermind. That isn't the sort of things I should send holos about. How is your mum? Tes? How is Lord Kindrak? Let me know how everyone is doing, but mostly - mostly tell me how you are."
"I have to go, I have work to do - archeology research, actually." She leaned forward, arm clipping as it reached beyond the recording perimeter. "I miss you Obisen. Talk to you soon."
She smiled faintly and the recording ended.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The holo flickered a few times, unable to keep focused. The sound faded in and out between bursts of static. Eventually the holo stabilized itself, showing one eye of Obisen Kindrak. He chuckled and the holo was pulled back from his face. The human sat back as he placed the piece of tech on a stable surface and smiled widely, waving a hand in front of him.
“Lana! It’s so good to hear from you again! It has been far too long since we’ve spoken. We must really find a way to meet up once I return back to the homeworld...and Arkanis? The sector isn’t that bad, no worse than what I’ve seen out here. Still, it is always disheartening to be away from the homeworld, isn’t it?” He paused and reached for something off screen. He sat very quiet and still for a few seconds before finally exhaling. His sniper rifle is brought into frame and he looks down, trying to adjust something. “Sorry--I’m actually on a stake out right now, but I am not really sure why. All the intel points to the target not actually being here, but the Major thinks he knows better than I do--” He rolled his eyes, but it was somewhat hard to see through the graininess and flicking of the obviously cheap and low tech holocommunicator. “Ah--I should not speak ill of the Major. He knows what he is doing far more than I do--I do wish they’d let me use my skills from Intelligence, but apparently this is all I’m good for.” He waggled the rifle in his hands and chuckled.
“I’m not sure if you ever did stakeouts, but they are a little tedious. I’ve been sitting in this outcropping for nearly a day now. I’ve actually been able to catch up on our shows whilst I’m out here! Emperor knows I would never hear the end of it if my squadmates caught me watching them...it’s just like the Academy all over again. But you are right, she could have saved herself a lot of heartbreak, but the heart wants what the heart wants, as the expression goes. It does make for an interesting show, however! If you ask me, I think it will be interesting to see how Olar deals with the Imperial Justice System. Do you think he’ll learn that the Empire is where he and all free people truly belong? I do hope so.”
Obisen begins to talk again, but there is a sudden flourish of movement. The recorder falls to the ground. The feed shakes and flickers and a single blaster bolt is heard. After a moment of silence, the video stabilizes and Obisen is back in frame. “Sorry, my target--” He looked down and bit on his lip. The video abruptly cuts off.
The video flickers back on, a little slower this time. Obisen’s face takes up almost all of the projection and his voice is barely above a whisper. “Sorry, Lana! I hope that didn’t scare you. Life is a bit...different out here. The navy wasn’t this bad and Intelligence was...nothing like this.” He blows a strand of hair from his face. “It isn’t bad. It is important work, but sometimes I do wish I was--”
“Hey, who you talkin’ to, Private?” The voice wasn’t Imperial at all and Obisen’s face flickered away, only to be replaced by a weedy looking fellow with a thin mustache that would look better on a teenager and not a grown adult. “Sendin’ some dirty holos to that twi’lek of yours?”
“Bivvin! Give it back!” “Oh, is it your girlfriend?” The Bivvin character licked his hand and used it to slick back his hair. “Hey sweetheart. How you doing?”
The recorder is knocked from the hands holding it. It recorded its tumble to the ground and a few frames of a bloodied nose Bivvin laying on the ground near it. The recorder is quickly scooped up and shut off.
The recording starts again, this time the hum of shuttle can be heard. The video is blurry and clips over and over, the audio is almost as bad. “Sorry about that--I can’t seem to figure out how to even delete things off of this…” Obisen chuckles slightly and rubs at his neck, his hand covered in wrappings. “Well, at least you can get a glimpse of life out here in the Auxiliary. Like I said...it’s different, but it’s rewarding and important…” That sounded less like a statement than a question, but Obisen kept talking. “Mum is doing fine, by the way. She sends her love, as always. Tes has been on a diet and I’ve been thinking of finding him a mate. Don’t you think it would be fantastic to breed sleens that are small enough for the flats in the city? Just think of how glorious that would be!”
The video rocks back and forth and Obisen looks off screen. “Ah, that is my sign to leave. I miss you, Lana. Do be safe out there. Perhaps if we are lucky, I can get assigned to where you are. It could be like old times! Love you.”
Seventy-seven pushed her wet bangs from her face, gloved hand smearing black hair and blood across her scarred skin. It was raining, and they were tired; their weapons drawn, chests heaving in the moment of respite they had to get their bears before pressing on to stay ahead of their pursuers. Her eyes met Obisen's, pale and changed since the cybernetics, but still as intense and purposeful as when they were children. "Don't worry," she said in that tidy Imperial accent, "You belong to me."
((omfg did u just))
Obisen Kindrak gave her a small little smile, the kind he would give her when he would predict the ending of a holodrama or when his mother agreed she could stay for dinner after she swore she only cooked enough for her and her son. The circumstances were much different, but the sentiment was still the same, right?
"Lana, you worry too much. That is supposed to be my job, isn't it?" He took a few deep breaths, thanking the Emperor for his love of morning jogs through the jungles of Dromund Kaas. He gave her a small little chuckle that was more nervous that confident and he looked over his shoulder. He couldn't see anything through the rain, but he knew they had to keep going.
"We should get going. You okay to run a bit more? I don't know if I can actually carry you, but I can try."
One was born in a lab, the other to a family, but both were engineered by the Empire to never question their loyalties. They were the perfect example of what every child in the Empire would grow up to be.
Lana (77) and Obisen Kindrak; best friends since their Academy days and both far too good for the Empire they were born to serve.
Lana belongs to interspacing! I hope you like it! <33
