Update: Casus Belli

Courage lost, all lost: 

Befriending one NCO hadn't done much for my integration into Easy Company but making friends with a second NCO, particularly one as liked and respected as Bull had tipped the scales in my favor. He had escorted me back to the town where I was greeted by, I wouldn't call them friendly, but civil paratroopers. My helmet was lost in the mix, they saw me for what I truly was. Not the wayward paratrooper but as a woman.

Early-ish update for my birthday tomorrow! I’m on Fall Break right now and I was able to drive home to visit my family for my birthday. I am updating Casus Belli from my childhood bedroom where I wrote A Little Discord (the first iteration of Casus Belli) and it’s the loveliest bit of nostalgia. Hope you all enjoy the update, it’s one of my favorite chapters with a little Easter Egg to Virginia’s name sake at the end!

“Good soldiers are hard to come by, Lewis. You seem to have good soldiers here. My agent is the reason less will die. My agent will keep your good soldiers in supply.”

“Sir?”

“You see this, here,” Captain Gold gestured to the jagged coastline of Normandy on the sand tables. it was depicted as faithfully as aircraft surveillance could provide. “We know where four of the German fortifications are because of my agent.”

“Our intelligence agencies-” Lewis started to say. They had done this work as a collaboration. Operation Overlord wasn’t made possible by a single man but through the work of the Allied forces, hadn’t it?

“Are nothing compared to my agent’s work,” Gold said, his face splitting in a smile.   “Indiscernible in a city. Known as the serpent of Normandy, they have been operating solo for two years.”

Gold’s finger stabbed at the map again. “This, this is where a garrison of forces is kept. And here, my agent destroyed an anti-aircraft gun that would have blown your planes to dust. Do you see how valuable this agent is to you and your battalion? How much you owe?”

“Isn’t that their job, Captain?” Lewis asked. Operatives were selected to find information, just as he was to apply the found information.

“War is a debtor’s game.”

“And now we pay?”
