"Agent Kingston, your yearly reviews are in." Maria stood in the door of the man's tiny office in New York and brandished the relevant documents in one hand. "I was in town, thought I stop by. Your work has been, as always, exemplary. There has been talk of increasing your security clearance to Level 2, so if you'd like to do that, you'll need to go through the interviews and checks again. You can turn it down, of course."
She didn't expect he would turn it down; he was one of the more promising agents in SHIELD. Ambitious, but quietly so, and very much dedicated to his work. He worried her a bit, actually; he didn't seem to have much of a life outside the job. But then, she didn't either. Pot, meet kettle. She hoped he wouldn't burn out too soon; the best ones sometimes did.
