Team Avatar - R!Soobin
The boys were enjoying a laid back day of schedules. No makeup, no long drives and no dancing. They attend a short vocal session and found themselves in a small conference room they used to study english in. Most days they had their teacher there, but today they were just completing some practice sheets on their own. The work was more challenging than usual. Everyone in the group had a good grasp on english, but there’s always room for improvement. Especially, with the upcoming interviews they had to film with native english speakers.
Yeonjun was working quietly on his own, scribbling down words with a perplexed expression. He only understood half of what he was looking at. Beomgyu was having a similar experience and opted to doodling on the paper instead. They were all a bit out of practice and so many words looked the same but meant different things; read and read, how ‘ough’ made an F sound but also a ‘who’ sound, and whatever the fuck an apostrophe was. It was frustrating.
Soobin dropped his head onto the table and whined into the work book. The words didn’t make any sense and the sounds were too hard and kept changing! It all started to blur into one big mess. The maknaes were breezing right through it, but Soobin couldn’t keep up. He felt a familiar sensation gnaw at his chest and felt himself start to sink. Before he knew it, he was giggling to himself. This caught the others attention immediately.
“Hyung? What’s so funny?” Taehyun asked, setting his pencil down.
“Jus’ little!” Soobin chirped, looking down at his shoes and tapping them against the floor.
Taehyun eyed Huening Kai who was across the table, looking surprised, and then back to Soobin. Their leader was no longer in leader mode. Yeonjun hadn’t noticed yet, still scribbling away at the other side of the long table. Soobin looked back up, not noticing Taehyun change his expression in seconds to a more friendly one for his sake. They knew how vulnerable Soobin felt in moments like these and did everything they could to keep him happy.
“Oh, I see. Do you need anything?” Taehyun asked kindly. He pulled Soobin closer, thanks to the wheeled chairs, and ruffled his hair.
“Mmhh…” Soobin thought for a second, cutely pressing a finger to his lips. “Home. Needa go home cause i have aang to watch!” He said, his eyebrows raised. Soobin usually referred to movies or tv shows by the main character’s name instead of the title. Avatar the last air bender was quite a mouth full for his little mind.
Soobin picked up Taehyun’s hand before he could respond and stared at them. He made sure it was flat, inspected it palm up, and grinned.
“You have water hands!” He beamed. “I have air/fire hands cause mine look like both.”
Taehyun had a slight idea of what Soobin was talking about, but didn’t know how he was identifying these things in real life when they only existed in a cartoon.
“How’d you figure that out?” Huening Kai asked, curious about his own hands.
“A picture! Th-The shape of your hand matches either fire, water, earth or air. So, Tyunnie would be like Katara.” He explained expertly. Beomgyu was in on the conversation now, too. He liked watching Atla with Soobin.
“Ah! I’ve seen it too! I have fire hands.” He added, making Soobin smile because he engaged in the conversation.
“Can you guys be quiet.” Yeonjun insisted from down the table.
“Oh! Hyung!” Soobin chirped, jumping up from his chair and scurrying over to Yeonjun.
He stood behind the oldest and grabbed his hand, the one he happened to be writing with. Yeonjun scowled and pulled away. Soobin didn’t notice his grumpy mood and grabbed his hand again. Yeonjun’s pen clattered against the wooden table and he fiercely yanked soobin’s hand away.
“Go away! I’m trying to figure this shit out!”
Soobin held his hands to his chest insecurely, and whimpered. He didn’t like it at all when people got rough with him. Beomgyu got up to grab Soobin’s arm and lead him back to the spot he was sitting at. By the time he was sat down again, tears were rolling down his face. Anxiety started wrapping around him like a snake.
“I tell you guys all the time to leave me alone when we study, but you don’t! You act like stupid children and choose to annoy me instead!” Yeonjun snapped. He hadn’t looked up at the others. He knew he shouldn’t let those words fall from his mouth, but it was too late.
Honestly, he didn’t care. They had been talking nonsense that turned into blubbering noise while he was trying to focus. He didn’t know or care what it was about. All he knew, was that he was in a foul mood and wanted to be left alone. He wasn’t paying attention to the way Soobin’s mouth dropped open, stuttering in a breath and sniffling.
“Why would you say that?!” Huening Kai said protectively.
Soobin cried quietly, hiding his face in his sleeves that were over his hands. Yeonjun’s words were chanting around his head, reminding him of just how childish he acted without realizing it. It was always hard for Soobin to give into his little side and act freely without the fear of judgement. Everyone thought he regressed the least out of the group, but that wasn’t true at all. Almost daily he found himself partially regressed and pretending to be normal for at least an hour. Those were the times he went quieter than usual and bit his fingernails, but no one ever noticed.
“Shhh, it’s okay baby. Hyung, Soobin regressed.” Taehyun said, turning from Soobin to Yeonjun with an angry frown.
Yeonjun’s back tensed and he turned around like a deer in the headlights, eyes blown wide. It hadn’t crossed his mind that Soobin could be little. He hurt his baby.
“Binnie, I’m so sorry, I-I didn’t know! I’m so sorry!”
“A-Appa hate meee-” Soobin sobbed. He only called Yeonjun that when he was very little.
“No, baby that’s not true.” Taehyun said, rubbing his shoulder.
Yeonjun sped over to them and reached out to rub Soobin’s back. When his hand touched his hoodie he flinched away like Yeonjun’s hands were claws. Yeonjun took the hint and took a step back, giving Soobin the space he needed.
“I shouldn’t have said that about you guys. My stupid irritation got the better of me. I never meant a word I said, Angel. I love every side of you, all of you. Even the loud, silly, rambunctious ones.” He said, apologizing with his whole heart.
He could tell that what he said didn’t just affect Soobin, but the other boys too. Huening Kai’s eyes were glassy and Beomgyu had pulled his legs up to his chest. Taehyun noticed it too and got up to find some tissues.
“I’m so sorry, Binnie. I was a little overwhelmed, it’s not your fault, okay? Can I see your face, sweetheart?” Yeonjun asked softly, crouching to the floor so he was shorter than Soobin and therefore less intimidating.
Wet sniffling from across the table caught his attention and he made eye contact with Kai who had tears rolling down his cheeks. Taehyun returned swiftly and settled down next to Kai, patting away his tears with a tissue and helping him blow his nose.
“Appa hate little me.” Soobin mumbled tearfully. Yeonjun had to hold back his own tears when he heard those words fall from his baby’s mouth.
“I could never; I will never hate my little binnie. You make my life so much brighter with just a glimpse of that smile I love. I am honored to take care of you, I adore taking care of you. Soobin, I’m so sorry I lost my temper.” He apologized again, hoping he could fix the situation before Soobin truly hated him.
Soobin was silent, processing the apology and sincere words. He took his hands away from his face and used his sleeve to wipe away the dampness on his cheeks. His vision was a little blurry, but he looked at Yeonjun and slid off the chair into his arms. All he wanted was to be held and coddled for the rest of the day.
“There you go. It’s okay, baby.”
Yeonjun scooted backwards a couple feet until his back hit the wall and readjusted Soobin, so he was sitting sideways on his lap with his head on his shoulder. He kissed his head over and over again, as a silent expression of affection and apology. He looked up at some shuffling noises and found Huening Kai kneeling in front of him, before he crawled closer and settled down on Yeonjun’s right side, using Soobin’s back as a head rest. He wanted cuddles, too.
Taehyun and Beomgyu were quick to join the trio on the floor. Soobin was sniffly, the occasional stray tear rolling down his cheek. They sat together for a long time, listening to nothing in particular until Kai started chatting about the plushies he found on amazon that he made a long list of the night before. Beomgyu shook his head, as did Taehyun who shared a room with the boy and knew they hardly had any space for more fluffy friends. This didn’t stop Huening Kai from blabbing about it and it actually distracted Soobin enough for him to calm down. Listening to the described “pastel rainbow kitty that was part unicorn” caught it attention and curiously quite a bit.
“Wan’ kitty.” He mumbled, tugging on Yeonjun’s shirt. The oldest smiled down at him.
“You don’t even know what it looks like, baby.”
“Magical! It looks magical.” Kai stated, pointing with his finger to emphasize his seriousness.
“Magical..” Soobin agreed quietly.
Yeonjun chuckled at his babies cuteness and brushed away Soobin’s bangs that were getting in his eyes. He needed to get a haircut, but Yeonjun thought the slightly overgrown look made him look as sweet as could be. He wished he had known or realized that regular Soobin had left town, so they could’ve avoided the altercation. But, all he could do was provide comfort and warmth while Kai helped him cheer up. It was heart warming when the youngest took on an almost bigger brother role to Soobin. Huening Kai tended to be the baby in and out of his own headspace and didn’t get to take care of his hyungs too often.
“Binnie, I’m six what’a ’bout you?” Kai asked, crawling in front of Yeonjun and tilting his head cutely at Soobin.
“Mm.” Soobin hid his face in his Appa’s shoulder.
“Let’s let him think about it.” Yeonjun said softly, giving Kai’s shoulder a loving pat to praise him for being kind.
“Four…” Huening Kai whipped his around towards Beomgyu, who spoke up for the first time since Soobin started crying.
“Cute! Come here!” The maknae squealed before attacking him in a bear hug. Both of the boys laughed together and rolled around, lazily wrestling each other.
Soobin watched them out of the corner of his reddish eyes. He didn’t want to play fight. He wanted to be babied and listening to nice lullabies with his Appa. His blankie was far away at home and needed to be in his arms or around his shoulders. Yeonjun noticed how Soobin pouted to himself and wondered what was going on in his little head. He was definitely much younger than usual if he was nonverbal.
“Bunny, how small are you feeling right now?” Yeonjun asked. Soobin looked at him with eyes like the moon and lightly chewed his pointer finger. He mumbled out an almost silent ‘two’ and spaced back out, letting his worries slip away.
“He hasn’t been this young in months…” Yeonjun mumbled, making quick eye contact with Taehyun.
“Maybe it’s because he regresses less often than the rest of us. It might’ve been building up for a long time.” Taehyun thought aloud.
Soobin’s headspace was pushed away for a couple seconds, as he internally cringed at how wrong they actually were. He didn’t want to have big thoughts, so he told big soobin to go away and shook his head. Taehyun and Yeonjun’s words quickly became muddled with brain fog and got further away when he started dozing off.
“Boys, be nice. We need to head home soon.” Taehyun said when he saw Beomgyu attempt a forceful headbutt towards Kai.
“I think I’ll bring Binnie to the private lounge for a short nap. He’s falling asleep on me.” The oldest said quietly.
“That’s a good idea. I don’t think he could handle pretending to be big all the way through the building and for the car ride.”
“Exactly my thought process.” Yeonjun chuckled.

Tucked away in the private space, Soobin rested with his hyung on the wide cozy sofa. The room had a dark grey color scheme and lights that could be dimmed to a soft yellow glow. Yeonjun often found himself there with one of the members, usually if they regressed. Huening kai even had some plushies hidden under the furniture. It was calming and peaceful, something you couldn’t find often in an apartment or dance studio of five boys.
Soobin always got sleepy after crying and benefited from a small nap afterwards. If not, they had a grumpy baby Soobin on there hands. He was laid entirely on top of Yeonjun, turning him into a human mattress, as he used his chest as a pillow. It was one of his favorite places to fall asleep. His bed took the number one spot, but Yeonjun was a close second. It made him feel especially babied and protected while deep in a vulnerable headspace. Sometimes all five of them would sneak off to the lounge room and be little all together while watching a movie. That was very rare though, since at least one of them was always big to keep things in check.
Yeonjun couldn’t help but squeeze Soobin a little bit, as he mulled over what happened earlier. Did he make Soobin feel as terrified and hurt as he felt when he regressed? Yeonjun honestly never wished that upon anybody. He wasn’t sure what he would do with himself if he made another person feel like that.
“Binnie…” Yeonjun murmured, running his hand down Soobin’s back and tapping his butt in a friendly manner.
“You should wake up now, sweetie.” He said. They had been in there for nearly an hour and Yeonjun didn’t want to ruin Soobin’s sleep schedule.
“No…comfy.” Soobin grumbled, showing off his ever so pouty lips and turning his head the other way to doze back off.
After some more coaxing, he pushed himself upright and sat on Yeonjun’s thighs. He spaced out for a few seconds while he woke up and figured out where he was. Then he attempt to flop back down, but Yeonjun shot up and caught him, laughing lightly.
“No more sleeping. We need to head home and have some food.”
Soobin perked up slightly at that. His stomach was empty and growling angirly.
“How’re you feeling?” Yeonjun asked, combing Soobin’s hair with his fingers.
“Not sure.” He mumbled. “Kinda in between?”
“Will you be okay heading home or should we hangout here for awhile?”
Soobin tugged his lips to the side as he thought of an answer. Yeonjun’s heart fluttered at the cute habit. It made him feel warm and snuggly inside. That feeling went away, though, as Soobin’s expression changed to a worried frown. He caressed his rosy cheek and asked what was wrong.
“Can’t stay big. I’m sorry.” Soobin whimpered, tumbling quickly into his headspace for the second time that day.
Yeonjun wrapped him up in a hug and reassured him. They had plenty of time to stay where they were and relax. Soobin found himself hiding away in Yeonjun’s shoulder again, doing his best to listen.
“You don’t need to be sorry, sweetie. I love having quiet time with my baby boy. We can talk, snuggle, watch tv, listen to music…whatever you’re up for.” Yeonjun said.
Soobin stared down at his lap and realized he had subconsciously started playing with Yeonjun’s hand. He looked at it silently and remembered the chart of hands that he was talking about before he got shouted at. He never got to see what element Yeonjun would bend.
“Fire…” He whispered.
“What’d you say?”
“Fire. Y-Your hand. Fire hand.” Soobin babbled. Yeonjun wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but it sounded oddly familiar.
“Taehyunnie has water hands, Beomie has fire, an’ I have air/fire hands. Dunno ‘bout Kai.”
Yeonjun remembered the conversation that kept interrupting his thought process when he was trying to study. He remembered the way Soobin kept trying to take his hand. He remembered how cruel he had been. Now was the time to make up for it. Yeonjun gasped, his mouth agape.
“Really!? Oh how good, I can light your birthday candles all by myself!” He beamed, purposely exaggerating his reaction. Soobin giggled at the response and opened and closed his hand, making puffing sounds for pretend fire.
“What else can I do with fire hands?” He asked curiously.
“Make lightening, but I don’t like lightening.”
“That’s so cool!” Yeonjun smiled, ruffling Soobin’s hair.
“You can make big explosion and then I can move it all around with wind! Beomie, too! He has fire hands. Then Taehyunnie can put it all out with water.”
“What about Huening?”
“Oh…Not sure. Maybe he’s like Sokka and is just silly.” Soobin chuckled.
Before heading home they spent a few minutes enthusiastically talking about avatar the last airbender. There was an excited glow in Soobin’s eyes, as he spoke about his favorite characters and how he hated ponytail Zuko. He eventually begged to go home, because he needed to know what element Kai would bend and he wanted to pretend he was Katara in the shower. Soobin never failed to surprise Yeonjun with his creativity and joyful spirit.
Huening Kai ended up having water hands like Taehyun
