Agitated thin-film dryers have been very successful with difficult-to-handle products. Simply stated, the method quickly separates the volatile from the less volatile components using indirect heat transfer and mechanical agitation of the flowing product film under controlled conditions.

 Agitated thin-film dryers are operating horizontally continuous contact dryers and are used for a wide range of applications under vacuum, atmospheric pressure and overpressure. They consist of a horizontally heated shell with end covers and a rotor with bolt-on blades. The wet product filled by the inlet nozzle is lifted by the rotor blade, mounted on the hot wall and at the same time fed to the opposite end of the body towards the outlet nozzle. The generated vapors are currently flowing backwards for the flow of products and placing the dryer near the feed nozzle. Evaporation and conveying capacity is converted by proper rotor blade arrangement. The inner particles in the dry zone are removed into the wet zone. Humidity levels of less than 1% can be achieved. The residence time of the product is usually between 5 to 15 minutes.

  Horizontal thin film dryers are also suitable for other applications besides leaving dry, such as cooling particles and melting products. The outstanding rate of heat transfer for hot solid products enables the cooling of large amounts of solids in a compact machine compared to the commonly used cooling screws and without cold air. As the urea melts into a melting product, the particles are heated and melted inside a dryer. The melt can be mixed with other liquids and solids to improve the properties of the final products.
