I’m just a random who reads your fic and blog but I’m over here in Scotland fretting about you. Is there no support/temp accommodation for people who lose their homes in the fires?
Hey, anon! I am at what currently constitutes exactly that! I heard that they did send some of the earlier evacuees to hotel rooms, but all of those were booked up from previous groups hours before the fires really went whole hog towards me. They didn’t want to set up a disaster relief center at all because of possible covid spread, so I spent a few hours puttering around until 2 AM walking Bucky in town and getting confused stares from patrolling police before it was announced as it became obvious evacuations would only continue and there was just going to be tons of people with livestock/pets with nowhere to go. (One fellow came in with 6 goats, 2 dogs and 4 human family members all loaded into his Subaru Outback.) There are large tents inside the building with cots that I’m allowed to bring my animals into, but their numbers are limited, and I’d really rather not risk contracting covid by being indoors with a bunch of packed-in strangers. The last thing my animals need is me in the hospital, or, you know - the other thing.
But I spent most of today organizing what’s left of my life, sending my electronics and the few fandom things I packed to be stored by someone I trust, and then I set about finding an air mattress and making my car into a moving bed and closet. So as long as I have somewhere I can legally park overnight, which I do, I’m good for the foreseeable future. And if anything goes wrong with either me or my pets while I’m here, the staff will help me out.
